    The Dawn Mine Trail hike takes you on a loop through history and beauty. You’ll see the old abandoned Dawn Mine, enjoy a cool swing installed there, and then retrace your way back along the Mt Lowe railway. But more than that, it’s a beautiful hike. You hug ridges with expansive views, you hike along a lush canyon stream, and then you descend along the ridge and soak in a vista that includes LA and the Verdugo Mountains. And there’s just enough climbing to make it a decent workout.

    Still haven’t gathered the courage to go back since the last time I was there about 4 years ago. Was there very early and walked by some kind of animal carcass after the private cabin. Was gone on the way back from the mine. Rocked my world.

    I totally understand why they blocked it off. The first 100 feet was super sketchy, but once you got past the water and the massive pit it was actually very safe snd super awesome

      They closed it off because they don’t want you to be able to get the gold

      I've seen pictures of the inside but never went in, even when it was open. For whatever reason going into the old mines freaks me out a little.

    I've been in both the upper and lower Dawn mines. I'm sad that they are sealed now.

      Yea, a lot of my buddies who loved going in were pretty upset that they were closed too.

      Would be cool to send one of those mapping drones in there to scan the walls and make a 3d map of what is down there! Like titanic but the depth is history of time instead of water. brb, changing careers. :)

    Oh I am def doin the out and back I am not going to do the whole loop! :/ That is more of my comfort level. I live in Pasadena and I love hiking the SGV Mountains but it has to be no more than moderate for me.

    Thanks for doing this one. I frequently hike Mt. Lowe Rd. To Mt. Lowe summit and have always wanted to check out the Dawn mine on my way back down. Since April, I've used your guidance to hike pretty much everything up in the Angeles/ San Gabriels range. Nobody else had the Dawn mine hike description, so now I feel comfortable enough to get it in this week. Thanks Hiking Guy! If you're taking requests, could you hike Iron Mountain sometime? That's been on my "bucket list" but nobody out there has a detailed route video

      Ah man, thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏 - glad the guides come in handy... and I have Iron Mountain on the list for when it gets cooler out - it's tough going back down and not one of my faves but worth bagging at least once

    I went there today great hike but a word of caution the trail past the mine going along the mountainside is a bit scary due to the narrow trail. Oh yeah make sure you have proper shoes because the first half of the hike is lots of rock/step climbing.

      Glad you got to check it out and agreed on your points! It's sketch if you climb around the use trails there.

    Went to try this today only to find out the stupid parking lot was closed and a sign stating the hike was closed grrrrr. What’s a good way to find out if a particular hike is closed?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 года назад +4

      ugh sorry to hear that - on my guides I have a link to the park up top called "alerts and closures" - click on that link to figure out the status... I generally go through a whole checklist before leaving - park website, caltrans website, twitter feed - I've had a trail closed on me after long drives too many times...

      @@Hikingguy that is a good practice to check first. I am good about the weather and daylight hours but need to add checking status to the list. For anyone else looking today, the trail is OPEN and ready for your visit!
