I've been watching a lot of blacksmithing and knifemaking videos on youtube lately, and I've been pretty consistently surprised and impressed by knifemakers, both in terms of what they make and how they work. Rarely do you see a group of people with such a combination of respect and enthusiasm for a craft, and such a commitment to quality, learning, and improvement.
This is very true Matthew Groves. I think the trade really evokes a strong sense of pride and independence that pushes makers to at least strive for excellence.
Excellent video. Really appreciated the commentary. It cleared up some aspects of the process for me. And thanks for the R&D knife. The bevel on the blade is very nice. Good touch on the grinder. There is definitely a market for your projects. Thanks for sharing your expertise and experience.
I used to make knives in Australia. And then I had a motorbike accident which left me paralysed. I am back in India now. This video of yours has inspired me to pick up that hobby again. I just placed and order for a 2x36 sander and a Bosch Angle grinder. I shall start a new project about sometime next week and show you my results. I will gave to just use an old grill with a hole on the side for a blower for heat treatment. Tempering will take place in the oven. If it isn't too difficult to do it on the wheelchair, I might think of investing in better equipement. Thank you!
I look forward to seeing your finished knife Amrinder! I'm honored that my video was able to inspire you to start making knives again. Thank you for your support, my friend. : )
I’m actually working on some new knives right now using 1095 and I just ran across your channel and man what an inspiration!!! You do a wonderful job and just watching you work has answered some questions I had of myself and gave me some better ideas on some fine detailing work. I also use the cold bluing on knives and never thought of using the paste. Keep up the awesome work!!!!!!
Wow, beautiful knife! I love the bluing color, and the layered scales look fantastic! Very cool blade shape, too. A nice leather sheath would be perfect for it!
Beautiful Knife Ben! The way the light is the blade comes off brown, which is just gorgeous! or maybe that was the intention using the blue stuff. I'm still very new in learning. I'm very much looking forward to following your channel, and learning your techniques. Very stunning results.
Very very good! Interesting and easy to follow thanks to your pleasant narration. I love to see knife making with such more basic tools, results are awesome. Thanks FRK, keep them coming!
I wish the 80's were 20 years ago lol. I'd be at ft Stewart georgia getting ready to go to Germany for 3 years! Miss those young army days. I retire in 5 months. It went way too quick.
Turned out very nice. I will have to get some of that bluing paste. Also a good idea with that hollow grind under the scales. Can provide for some interesting designs with a skeletonized knife.
This was my first time watching one of your videos and/or seeing one of your knives. Also the first time I’ve ever subscribed to a channel having seen so little of it. I guess I’m trying to say is, well done on the video for sure. Super well done on the knife as well. I am currently in the midst of making my very first knife and as exciting as the process is, I think now I will take some time and watch very much more of your channel before continuing. I feel like it could only help at this point.Thank you for sharing your knives and their processes. Keep up the great work on the videos. Thank you very much.
You just got a new subscriber. Really enjoyed the video. Very good at explaining what you're doing and why. Cannot wait to watch some more of your videos.
Love this knife. I watch just about all the knife makers and this one stand out with the best of them. The handle is beautiful. Hope you keep going with the channel.
Great knife. Love the two different materials used with the white liner, gives a good contrast. I just came across your channel a few mins ago, glad I did. Keep up the good work!
You thinks its possible to get a pdf template of this knife ? I like the size and style and would love to try and make this myself. Amazing knife btw. I’m a new Knifemaker and am looking to try and make some knives that already been done to get myself used to the steps and do some of my own . Thank you
I am a very big knife enthusiast. I love them. But i am very particular about how they look, how there made, but most of all how they function. I have to say the knife in this video is extremely nice. I am very impressed with your work sir. I would be proud to own that knife... Very Good job!
This is the first video I've seen of yours but judging by the content definitely not my last. And that knife turned out absolutely gorgeous, the colors worked really well and the use of the liner was a nice touch
Great job man... well done. Ive been leathercrafting awhile, but im just getting started in knifemaking, so these videos are inspiring for a beginner like me.👌🏼
Jonathan Isenhower, most two-part epoxies will work. I’m using BSI 30 minute slow cure in this video. Slow cure is a little stronger than the five minute types. I don’t prefer five minute epoxy, mainly because it will sometimes begin to set up before I’m even finished applying it to the scales and tang. It becomes more difficult to work with after it begins to harden. West System epoxy is also a very popular brand for knife making. When I use all of the BSI I have, I’ll be switching to West System. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊
I fuck looove how real you are about, you rarely see a youtuber that really goes into detail what they did wrong, and i would say it really brings out a trust just watchin what you are doing. Oh and please do make more with voice over, you did an awesome job ! Have a lovely day :)
Thank you for noticing Andreas. I wanted people to understand that there are no perfect knife makers. We all make mistakes, and it's ok to make mistakes sometimes, as long as we learn from them. Even the best bladesmiths and knifemakers were new to the trade at one point. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. : )
Beautiful knife. Couldn't you use a shortened piece of brass rod, or G10 rod to make a "hidden" pin in the brown part of the handle? Just make it shorter than the full width of the handle and it wouldn't show through the micarta?
I'm organizing a preliminary buy for tools to make an awesome knife like you did here. Some of your content in this video helped. Can you make a video detailing the absolute minimum machinery and tools to produce work of this caliber? Thanks!
The absolute most basic tools required to make a good knife are the following: 1/2" round file, a double cut bastard file, a chainsaw round file, an f clamp, a center punch, a hand drill or benchtop drill press, some layout dye, a hacksaw (a cheap angle grinder is faster), sandpaper, a flat sanding block (buy a piece of aluminum from Tractor Supply), and a small forge (you can make one from k23 firebricks), canola or peanut oil to use as a quenchant (Costco or Sam's Club is a good place to find this), an unused paint can for the oil (try your local hardware store), a filing jig, and a vise. (check out this video ruclips.net/video/r9iNDRwwBQQ/видео.html) Don't buy the bricks online, they're much cheaper if you buy them locally. The K23 type is the only type that I know of that can be drilled and cut through. Don't try to cut through any other types, or they'll just wear out your drill bits and saw blades in a matter of seconds. If you don't feel like searching for the bricks and making a forge, just send your knife out for heat treatment. If you live in or near a large metropolitan area, there is probably a local company that can heat treat the knife for you. Otherwise, there are lots of online companies you can send your knife to. Thanks for watching and commenting. : )
Beautiful knife! Brown/Cepia finish to the blade? Or is it the lighting? Boy a Brown/Cepia finish would be outstanding I believe, especially with the handle material.just a thought.
Brady McPhail, I think it’s more the lighting than anything. It’s just a cold-blued finish. That would be a cool finish though. Maybe for a future knife. 😉
Brown would be a wonderful color for a kitchen knife or BBQ knife, however as a survival knife, camp knife or hunting knife I'm afraid it could get lost easily. You do excellent work! I'm a beginner, I am currently making my wife a Japanese boning knife as well as a Japanese paring knife and slicing knife as a set for a gift. Maybe I will consider doing them with a Brown finish with Osage Orange, Ivory liner, Spalted Maple or Curly Maple, Brass & Copper Mokume Gane bolster, pins and accents handle? or does that sound too busy? Honest answer
Love the voice over. For your first time it was very smooth and didn’t ruin the video. Btw the “holes” you put into the tang to reduce weight was called a “fuller”, or at least I think it is
Joe_the_squid, thank you sir. I can see how that could be considered a fuller, since it’s used to reduce weight. I’ve always associated fullers with the blade though, not the tang. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😉
You gave me a great inspiration with this. I will try to get a smilar one ( 6 weeks ago i wrote it to you this in instagram yet still not finished the knife but i made it half the way "yay" ) Keep on going strong mate i wish you all good there is.

What would a knife like this sell for?
About $120.00. Thanks for watching. 😉
great work man....
Thanks Jeff. : )
Beautifully done teach me more
I'm filming my next video right now. Thank you so much for you interest. : )
Great work man. Keep it up
Thanks, Oscar robinson -lll. 😉
Great looking blade and handle. What cold blue paste do you use? I’m find the perma blue liquid gives an uneven finish.
Aaron McOnie I think it’s the perma blue paste
Great knife!
very nice knife!! what is the product used to protect the knife better against rust? That would help me a lot!
Jellen Koch, it’s cold gun bluing paste.
Man that looks alot like the 1911 knife. Great job...
Wonderful knife
Thanks Trae Griffin.
Where do you buy your steel
Trae Griffin, I buy it from AKS or USA knife maker.
beautiful.....questions : blue paste?...what dps of an edge did you sharpen it at..?..and what method did you use?
Emilys candycakes, the blue paste is Birchwood Casey cold bluing paste.
To answer your second question, I actually never ground an edge on the knife in this video. I will next fall for hunting season. I’ll use the belt grinder to grind a 30 degree inclusive edge. The next step will be to strop the edge with a leather belt. I usually apply a small amount of green polishing compound to the stropping belt.
Thanks for watching and commenting. 😉
Flat River Knives ...thankyou...I'm in the process of making a blade out of 52100...just needing a hardness tester...
This is like an asmr he has such a calming voice
Thanks Hayden. 😉
