It is worth to point out that in EU, cause for Imperial was more rational. Acclimator Assault Ships and Venator Star Destroyers (Carriers) were rushed into service due to the war. But developed around same time Victory class intended as Brawler, was hold in testing by Palpatine. It was to maintain back up in case of if CIS would go too strong (used effectively during late stage of Coruscant battle (so shame we didn't see them in Clone Wars) and to deal with Bulwarks). As prolonged war was needed to maximize death toll of the Jedi.
Anyway. To deal final blow to all potential Venator what could go rogue after Order 66, Kuat designed Tector Star Destroyer. What was heavy brawler what could cheese and take down every rouge Venator. It was actually decent ships. Designed in pair with Gladiator SD. What were lighter escort carriers, similar to Quasar Fire. Which job was to drop large number of fighter and escape. When Tector finish the enemy. But success of Order 66 and lack of potential targets (anything larger would face Mandator II) make them obsolete. It is why they decide to scrap Gladiators (only small number was made) and cut hole into Tector, giving it huge hangar. That is how ISD born. In theory is simplified logistic, but in practice it was huge venerability. Ship designed initially for battle line, was too costly and complex to operate. When in many cases it was just running cargo or fighters and ground forces.

Note that the TIE design evolved over the years, like just the stupid amount of BF-109 and FW-190 variants were made. Each evolution is just a bit faster, more maneuverable, and more killy.

That might've worked back in the 90's before we knew anything about Palpatine and the Sith, but implying he was only using the Empire's over militarization as a means to an end for protecting people just makes no sense based on what we know about him. Besides, if something that important was the reason for the Empire being so powerful it would've been mentioned in the movies. On the shields being down thing, I don't actually know, but I suspect tractor beams need to not have shields between them and the target to work. The obvious objection to this is that obviously the ship it is grabbing may have shields, but I would guess that the tractor beam then grabs on to the shield itself, making it not a problem if it is on the target side.
If my speculation is correct, then Luthen's countermeasures would be very hard to defend against specifically in a tractor beam using scenario. Maybe you could reactively turn on the forward shields very quickly, and live with whatever the interaction between the shield and the tractor beam is, since it is likely to at least be less bad than letting the countermeasures do their thing. Or maybe the tractor beam can briefly reverse direction in a pulse at a slightly wider angle aiming to push the particles out of it's firing cone, but you'd have to design that feature specifically with this kind of countermeasure in mind.

    • @CountDiLuna
      @CountDiLuna 2 года назад +1

Yes, I think you're onto something there. I mean, I'm assuming ships would be running navigational shields at all times per standard, which would render the counter measures completely useless. So either the deflector array has to be switched off when the tractor beam is engaged, or the counter measures are designed in such a way that they shred or cut through the navigational shields.

What if it's not based on line of sight but some radio frequencies ,I am speculating so they might not need to lower the shields ,seems kind of stupid either way to have a ship to capture other ships ,but it's main advantage can just get shreded before it can do it's job. I mean they had stuff like this before when pulling other ships and they didn't shoot any of the dishes . Other option is to use those ion canon's beforehand to disable weapons and other stuff ,but if they can disable engines and use the tractor beam to just fairy the ship aboard

By contrast, look at the united earth government from HALO. The UNSC was not prepared to fight the covenant when the threat emerged because the UNSC was an anti-piracy force. The largest ship-based weapon in their arsenal was the MAC canon… And those were relatively rare. The majority of the USC was frigates and light cruisers…. Because you didn’t need a ton of heavy cruiser to fight pirates.
There are always going to be pluses and minuses to every strategy, but the trade-off to Tarkin’s doctrine of rule by fear…. Is the constant debilitating fear. You are never going to create a status quo that the people are willing to live with, you might beat them down and force them to accept their situation at the moment, but you’re never going to make people happy with their lives willing to just accept the empires dominance of the wider galaxy in exchange for their nice quiet life dirt side. 20,000 star destroyers isn’t enough to truly control the galaxy, but it doesn’t have to be….there are no forces they can actually fight off the empire (Except the Vong) And the actual number of imperial battlewagons could have been reduced by half and the resources used to increase their patrol craft. The shift away from Venators to ISDs came at the expense of the empires ability to actually control the galaxy. They could smash any known resistance, but the resistance simply blended into the background and refused to give them a target to smash.
This scene where a single small ship escapes the larger patrol craft simply should not happen under a well structured military. A light cruiser with a small air wing should be virtually impossible to outmaneuver because it maintains a CAP capable of chasing down basically anything but the Millennium Falcon.
When the new republic took over, they didn’t just commandeer a bunch of TIE fighters and try to maintain order……they stuck with the X-wings because those gave them MUCH more bang for the buck and far more flexibility.

I think that another ship that the Empire could have made more and better use of was the Acclamator class, for several reasons.
1.) The Acclamator, at least as it existed during the Clone Wars, only required a crew of 500, which is frankly insane for a non-droid ship of its tonnage class. This would allow for more ships to be made and crewed to full efficiency better across the galaxy and the massive crew increases (which were most likely just the Empire putting people there for pointless busywork to show the populace they gave a shit about offering them jobs) could be cut back and more evenly spread across more vessels to act as standby personnel to take over injured or deceased personnel in combat.
2.) The Acclamator had a class 0.6 hyperdrive, which is faster than pretty much any mass-produced ship used by known powers at the time. This would allow it to be used really effectively as a rapid-response and interception ship to catch rebels, pirates and unruly dissenting parties before they can do real damage or gather sufficient strength. You could also theoretically build docking ports at strategic locations across the hull to allow for smaller ships like Arquitens, Gozantis, Raiders and Lancers to attach themselves on in order to piggyback off of the Acclamator's superior hyperdrive speed, and deploy to do their thing when it enters the battle.
3.) The Acclamator, due to existing since the inception of the Clone Wars, would have relied entirely on Pre-Imperial logistics chains, meaning that you don't need to worry about the cost of setting up entire support infrastructure and research and development or testing costs that making new ship classes would.
4.) The Acclamator costs about (IIRC) only half as much as the Venator, which in of itself costs less than an ISD, which combined with the other factors listed above meant that you could crank out this simpler, reliable, (relatively) easy-to-maintain battle-tested ship in massive numbers and spread them all across the galaxy, being able to respond to local threats faster than any other vessels from out-of-system and having the armor and firepower to cleanly handle almost any threat the Empire could realistically expect to face.
So you would have local system defense ships like the Cantwell, Gozantis and Arquitens and the like, and if reinforcements are required, you could have some Acclamators arrive in record time with a handful of smaller ships deploying off of their hull to help take control of the situation.

@@ReanuKeevesAus To be fair it wasn't just the Empire that could have benefitted from a good deal of practical sense. When the Yuuzhan Vong invaded, the New Republic had multiple functional World Devastators that were just lying around in some scrapheap somewhere, and they didn't use them out of "morality", meaning that they thought that their use would cause enough of a morale loss and public backlash that it would outstrip any benefit they could give to the war effort.
There would've been a really easy way to avoid or minimize this problem. They could've just reactivated the WDs to feast on some uninhabited and/or desolate/ultrahostile systems that were rich in natural resources and have them build up tons of highly-automated and droid war assets. They would be mostly out of the way so people wouldn't have to look at them and be reminded of the Dark Empire days but they could still pump out a constant and steadily growing stream of fresh supplies and war material for the front lines. This would allow the New Republic to be less pressured on the front and have more resources with which not only to fight the Vong, but to cover for civilian evacuations and stuff.
Another benefit of the WDs is due to them being automated and a lot of the things they can build being automated, they could be used as psychological tools against the Vong themselves, ravaging Vong-infested worlds or tearing apart ships alive and processing that collected mass into swarms of highly-efficient droid war machines to throw right back at them. This would lead to more instances of the Vong becoming enraged and abandoning more sound strategies to take out the giant blocky monuments to absolute sacrilege and it would mean the New Republic could press the attack more often with far less casualties.

To be honest the entire Republic navy was well suited to dealing with the rebellion.
Acclamator's had decent weapons, extremely strong armor and a low crew count and could be pumped out pretty quickly
Venator's would have had more then enough firepower to deal with rebellion capital ships and fighters while also having an immense fighter complement that could outnumber anything the rebels could field.
Arquitens have already been shown to be very effective ships well armed and fast, small and maneuverable
Victory's well equiped with quad turbolasers dozens of twin turbolasers and macross levels of missile spam with it's 80 missile launchers it's also well suited for destroying rebellion ships.

The arrestor cruiser only has a few powerful ion cannons, a dozen light laser cannons, and a few tractor beams. Although it can carry six times more tie fighters than a gozanti-class ship. It might be suitable for small engagements, but not an actual battle in my opinion.

Force fields in star wars rarely stopped objects. They were designed to protect against high energy weapons.
    Citation:
    Saul Gurerra/Droidika Clone Wars.
Luthen in Andor and the imperials response to non energy weapons.
No reactions with ships on close approaches in all Star Wars films (exception: the planetary force field in Rogue One and the Death Star shield in ROTJ).
In short - only the largest (planet/moon sized) shields could defend against a ship, projectile or lightly rolled grenade.

    • @MatthewSmith-wv5fi
      @MatthewSmith-wv5fi 2 года назад

Oh, and having counter-measures to stop guided missiles. Think about it. Why would that be a thing if debris affected shielding?
Where are battles most likely to be fought? Would it be within the gravity well of a planet? That's a counter measure that only works in one unique condition.
If you think about that more it could be cool...but I know...too much science in star wars.
So...the likely need for a defense system is, in this context, invading or defending a planet. Probably going to occur in orbit, right? So the invading force could just unleash debris and it would fly into the defending ships, the planet and could wipe out communication systems and other defenses.

Those lightsaber things were dumb, like bringing a sword to a gunfight. I would imagine the smaller ship would have lost its momentum if it were actually physically cutting through the hull of a much larger ship, and could just be shot to pieces, once it was 'stuck' in place, kind of like how a sword could get stuck in a victim for a few seconds with a deep cut into the rib cage, depending on how it was used. Recall that in Phantom Menace Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber took a fair amount of time and effort to cut through the trade federation ship's bridge blast doors, and I'd imagine the outer hull of a ship would be similarly tough, and those things would probably drain the smaller ship's energy fast, when cutting through a lot of hull.

Personally, I would even say the ISD should be completely different. Get rid of the fighter wing (Including the large hangar), the pre-fabricated base, the stormtrooper legion, and the entire complement of army vehicles. Instead have the bridge be built where the hangar would be. Deep into the ship, like Battlestar Galactica CIC. Have two small hangars for VIP shuttles, supply shuttles, and boarding craft to be housed. You can also build enough space in these hangars for half a squadron of TIE-Defenders each. The rest of the ship would be focused on heavy turbolasers, ion cannons, and a good laser cannon array to destroy any fighter that gets near the vessel. Get rid of the current ISD bridge, that super tall structure in the back. Use the center-middle of the vessel to place the heaviest turbolasers so that you can have the biggest guns always aiming at enemies in front, and sides. For fighters, use some kind of TIE-Droid; take inspiration from the CIS and come up with a Vulture droid kind of fighter, something that can attach to the outside of the vessel. These would act as "wingmen" for the TIE-Defenders and can be controlled from the CIC or even a two-seater TIE-Defender.
Basically a blend of Empire and First Order thinking. A much smaller ISD that resembles a Resurgent-Class, but with no large hangars and stormtrooper legion. You want a space battleship, so let it be a battleship. More specialize ships would be amazing for the Galactic Empire, not these jacks of all trades, masters of none.
EDIT: Also, make the vessel not so logistics intensive and much easier to manufacture. Make like 2,000 of these. But at the moment you see a serious rebellion forming, you can start making these bad boys like bakery making bread.

Basically I have the star destroyers I can occasionally send if I need the tarkin doctrine to be shown but I still mostly use a practical police fleet

The counter measures were awesome, very much a case of "using the enemy's strength against them". The laser beams were, hmm... I think I'd have preferred them if they were just like fixed rapid firing blasters, unless there's some practical use for them.

In essence: the ISD can do everything, but it's a waste of resources to use a swat team, a crack detective, and a bomb defusal unit to pull over a drunk driver.
