Why can’t you make Stilton cheese in Stilton (and was it ever made there)?

  • Stilton cheese can’t be made in the town of Stilton because it is against the rules of the Stilton cheese PDO (protected designation of origin). But why those rules are in place and whether Stilton cheese was ever made in Stilton are down to the history of Stilton and its famous cheese.

    Absolutely loved this one.❤ definitely not upset that we get an extra long one. I get the algorithms and people's attention span don't normally like them. But I think the people who follow you would watch almost any length video you put out! Thank you for your hard work and dedication!!

    Fascinating. They really should have kept the cheese making local. I mean hindsight is 20/20 and its not like they could have predicted the coming of rail, but still.

      @@cheesehistory I am honestly not sure how I feel about the "This thing can only be made in this very specific geographical location type of thing". I mean even artist works eventually make it to the public domain. It feels like putting a copyright on human culture itself and so many food stuffs and other things have spread far and wide to the greater enrichment of everyone. I mean I think this kind of thing only exists in the EU where they can enforce it across a large swathe of countries. I am in Australia and we have lots of stuff made locally and called by whatever style its in without people jumping up and down and trying to sue. Colour me conflicted on this one. I get why certain regions may want this kind of thing in place, but I think restricted it lessens human culture as a whole.

    Great video with lots of interesting information. I thoroughly enjoyed the longer length of it to get all the facts in. Stilton cheese is very yummy and should be made in the town that bears it's name. 😊🧀🥰😋💝

    Another great video, thanks!
    I do think that the town of Stilton should be a member of the Stilton making club, but if not, I'm sure they'll find a creative way of making a cheese that we know comes from Stilton.

    Should they let cheesemakers in Stilton make Stilton cheese again? Let me know what you think.

      But it would NOT be Stilton - which is ironic. BTW a reasonable day's journey in the 17th century on horseback would be about 35 miles depending on the state of the road so Stilton is about two days out - probably three by coach in winter. Incidentally I think you may have omitted Webster's dairy in Saxelbye (although they may have closed).

    • @cheesehistory
      @cheesehistory  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for pointing that out.
      Webster's dairy closed in 2020 and are no longer lister as a producer on the SCMA website, which is a shame.

      @@cheesehistory Yes, it was I my opinion a very fine Stilton - a little saltier than Colston Bassett and with better texture than Cropwell Bishop. I liked the Quenby - it is a pity that one went too.

    Julier is a weird name. Don't think I've ever heard anyone add an "R" to the name Julie. But, hey, that makes you unique.

    Silton definitely should be allowed to make Stilton. I don't even know how a geographic protection can exclude the geographic location in the name. In fact the Virgina Wool case (USA) specifically ruled that you couldn't.

    • @johnwarr7552
      @johnwarr7552 Месяц назад +1

      Which is why you can buy "Brie" and "Parmesan" in the US that taste of mud.

    • @chrisVNZ
      @chrisVNZ Месяц назад

      Yeah, that's because America ignores Geographic indicators from outside USA. E.g. "Champagne" in a can.
      Separate issue to whether or not Geographic Indicator rights can be withheld from the geographic location of the indicator. Legally that outcome seems contra indicated.

    So, Stilton cheese has to be renamed as it is not from Stilton any longer, Stilton name must be for cheese from Stilton. The not from Stilton cheese needs to be call "Not from Stilton as I'm from another place" cheese.

    Could it be possible, that Stilton used to be in Nottinghamshire? , as the borders often change slightly throughout the history of Britain.

    • @cheesehistory
      @cheesehistory  Месяц назад +1

      Stilton used to be in Huntingdonshire, so it has changed county before. As I understand it, the borders of Nottinghamshire haven't changed much throughout its history.

      It's possible to buy Stilton in NZ. It's even in some of the supermarkets. We don't make it at all so there is no generic/fake Stilton. Blue cheeses seem to be one type that we just make our own versions rather than using famous names.

    So if you make genuine Stilton you can't call it Stilton, especially if you make it in Stilton! I wonder who the cheese makers who are allowed to make fake Stilton and label it Stilton bribed to make that idiocy happen!
