LITERALLY, the lighting and color saturation is the only difference. MK11 has a "darker tone", while MK1 is "bright and vibrant" to mirror Liu Kang's new era of peace. Both look stunning.
It's hard to compare. Visually, they both look great and excel in different ways. If I could credit one thing to MK1, it's that it has the most consistent amount of major improvement to character design that I have seen in an MK game. Mileena, Baraka, Reptile, Li Mei, Reiko, Havik, and Ashrah each have some of their best appearances in MK1. There are a few gems that will be hard to beat in MK11, though, like Sindel, Fujin and Scorpion.

I love to think the different art styles and etc fit better into the storyline and how we're in a completely different timeline which MK1 feels exactly like that so they did such a good job with the overall designs, style and storytelling
For me mk11 wins this easily,NR did a good job in combining photorealism and practicality with classic style designs and the fact that the characters in mk1 have no idle animations just make them look too 'gamelike' imo
I think I like the character designs in MK11 a little better than MK1, with only a few minor exceptions. MK1 is still awesome tho. The gameplay is way better
I mean the character design un MK1 was done more in a more simple style as a reference to the old games. IMO i like more the designs of MK1 for how simple they are, You can see every detail of their outfits and enjoy every detail of it while on MK11 they have the same problem that modern super heroes movies has: Take a simple design and just add a bunch of lines, stripes, metal and black to it to make it "cool"
I like the designs of Sub Zero(Kuai Liang),Johnny Cage,Sindel and Shang Tsung in MK11 And the Designs of Kitana,Tanya,Geras and Reptile looks way better in MK1 except Tanya because she wasn't in Mk11 but she looks better than she does in MKX
The costumes in the third act were stupidly over the top and ridiculous, it seems like they are running out of ideas, keep it classic and keep simple, they are making the same mistakes they did with the PS2 MKs when it comes to costumes.
Also notice how the clothes in mk1 actually have wrinkles on them and seems thin like an actual clothing. In mk11 every character with a fiber cloth looked like those clothes have pads inside them that makes it look thick
MK1's skin textures and color range is range is definitely a big step up. The characters and the game as a whole have a toned down style. Less bulky, slimer, and simpler designs overall. For some it works, for others I like the MK11 designs more. I think the same for idol poses. I think MK until 11 had terrible idle poses and MK11 was a big step up in animation quality. I think most poses in 1 are good, 11 still had some bad ones, but i do like the good mk11 poses more than the best ones in 1. So overall pretty competitive visual design in these games
The models of mk1 are fantastic but idk man, I don't think any scorpion outfit will ever beat mk11 for me. I love that it's got the badass hood and facemask, some armor but still slim. It's just 👌
I think what's happening here is that MK 1 has far superior background details compared to 11. However, unless you really start noticing the small improvements in character details in MK 1, the characters still look better and polished to the untrained eye in MK 11. This really shines when you look at the comparisons of models like, Shang Tsung, Geras, Sonya and Kano.
I think it's just personal preference. I like Kitanas model in 11 over mk1. Design wise....I'm trying to stay objective about it. I feel the same way about sub and scorp...their essence to mk lies within 11 over 1 but I guess that is the point for the whole rehash...
Especially the hair compared to 11. I see why they used a vibrant colour pallette in mk1 to let the players know its fresh start and a prosperous new beginning in liu King's timeline compared to mk11 when the realms are in th brink of chaos and collapse. One thing I miss in mk1 is the ending pose compared to mk11 which gives me goosebumps when I first saw them !
I agree They move waaaay less and more realistic They are not showing off of doing random animations like screaming and shit They are more focused on the opponent
I'll admit I prefer the newer ones too, but I don't dislike older ones. The MK1 stances feel more realistic, like how actual seasoned fighters would fight.
That the point. It was a universe craft by Liu Kang, make sense it look peace and beautiful. And indeed, for hundred of years, Liu Kang's universe was at peace until MK1 story take place. That just show Liu Kang did succeed creating a peaceful world for quite long before MK1 bs happen.
Above everything, I’m grateful for how colorful MK1 is , the scenarios are a delight to look at and the lightning is so natural and well placed, there was something so muted and almost wax like looking in the MK models that I never liked, love both games though but so far, I’m enjoying MK1 greatly
@@BuildSituationah yes because color and pleasing environments are for kids, next time they should just put one map in the game and it's just a void because no colors at all are super manly
So I learned that both of these scorpions are two different people, hanzo is the OG scorpion that we all know and the New scorpion is actually kuai liang who is usually sub zero.
spoiler alert, hanzo is kuai liang successor for scorpion, i think they're making the characters origin more grounded and add explanation for each conflicts
MK1’s presentation is overall way better, but alot of the victory outros in 11 are so much better. Liu Kang’s idle stance also got majorly downgraded. I’m really gonna miss the 3 line intros too
MK11 has better character models plus cooler outro animation, although the intro is a bit repetitive and the background isn't that great but the muscle, clothes and faces of characters are super cool MK1 on the other hand was super vibranr, with lightning improvement fits for my eyes. Models are still on point (props for improving mileena!) And btw, their effects are much beautiful and the moves and characters are all pleasing to the eyes. MK11 is canon to the universe so it makes sense while MK1 is just Liu Kang's recreation so it was super vibrant compare to the corrupted world
Most impressed with sindels transformation. She’s been looking so animated now she looks completely believable and realistic and stunning. All her graphics in story mode blow me away
She went from boss milf in mk11 to just being a slightly older clone of her daughters and li mei. I like old sindel better. Don't even care for her new move set either. Actually I feel like all females in MK1 had the issue of "same face". Because 3 of them did and li mei wasn't far off despite being different. But her having the same color palete as sindel and mileena didn't help either. And the fact all the others look so damn like made megan foxes face stand out even more on screen when ever nitara showed up. And that just fully kills immersion when ever her face or voice is on screen lol.
I will say that art style being different is one of the biggest factors when it comes to their differences and also the fact that shadows in MK11 has helped the characters feel more in detailed and in depth. But I will say, I think the team during MK11 was focusing more on character models and details while the team during MK1 was focusing more on the special effect visuals and background stages. The minor detail in each character in MK11 looks very well done, you look at Johnny Cage's sunglasses, it shows all the reflections in the background compared to MK1. But, MK1 represents such a beautiful background. it feels more in depth and has created a fight scene where the characters actually seem like they are fighting there. The effects too are really good, the water from Rain and the winds from Kitana just make their attacks feel more emphasized. Don't get me wrong, I love both games and both have their different styles, not a con to both of them.
@@jmgonzales7701 MK11 graphics already are awesome so to say which one looks "better" is mainly a subjective opinion. For me MK1 looks and feels better, much more details, colors, shadows, movements, etc. at the same time, specially in the stages, and that means a lot since MK11 still looks and feels superb.
@@jmgonzales7701 Its definitely because of the fighting stages and the particle effects of each special effect. Those take a lot of room of storage and you can see how in MK11 that the stages are not focused that well. Like the water movement in the fountain in the Wu Shi Dragon Grotto has a lower FPS animation when the screen slows down for the ending pose. Compared to MK1, each stage has an almost close to perfection detail, with each npc character model behaving almost like an actual character that you fight with. Like I said too about the special effects, each special effect is detailed with particle effects, and we see all the water movement and the winds have good detail. So I think those things are the reason why they take the game a lot more harder to run with
I actually really like the more reserved designs for the Earthrealm characters in MK1. I also love the designs in MK11, but it feels a lot more like a set of comic book characters than fantasy martial artists.
I mean makes sense since MK1 is more like the origin story when MK11 it's been a decades of fighting against the other realms and various evil gods and conquers.
@@ThePatxiao The past versions of the MK11 characters, which are the ones I have minor issues with, are from MK2 and just before MK3. They haven't been doing that for long. Kung Lao is especially bad.
That's a really good observation! MK11's are definitely fully embracing a comic book style of extremely ornamental, flashy presentation. MK1 is absolutely more reserved in its aethetic. That said, the materials, shading, lighting, etc... are noticeably better in MK1. The benefits of a new generation of hardware.
The MK1 special effects are so good by comparison. Lui Kang's Fire, Reptile's acid, Sub-Zero's ice, etc. All rendered beautifully. 11 isn't bad by any means but its clear they only wanted to push it further than that game ever did when it came to 1.
@@RicochetForceMK 1 was also Made for switch tho. I don't think the power of new gen console matter, probably the effect of the updated engine they use.
@@wuvyyyyy That was pure foolishness. Of COURSE the new generation matters. When the PS5 and XSX launched the PS4 and X1 were SEVERN years old. The new machines have dramatically better hardware, but more importantly, they have far more up to date software and standards which makes a substantial difference.
@@RicochetForce my point is, it is still Made with switch version in mind, which is way weaker than the PS4 and xbox one hardware, so probably the last gen console could run this game. And the fact that MK 11 was Made in unreal engine 3 while MK 1 was Made in unreal engine 4 which is a huge step up from unreal engine 3 lightning wise.
@@wuvyyyyy Uh, you're making really big claims here. "It's made with the Switch version in mind." There is nothing supporting this at all. MK1 leaned heavily on the strengths of the modern hardware and software techniques and standards of the 4K twins. It's clear that their hardware spec was the target hardware not the Switch. They were the platform used in promotional materials and demo events. The Switch version was hidden the entire time until release. And the biggest improvements in UE4 are not just "lighting". And that's before the fact that we know NRS heavily modifies the UE in their games (MK11 comes from such a decision). Come on man, have you actually looked at the engine improvements and features from UE3 to 4? What's going on here is simple: MK1 was made with the PS5/XSX as the target, and the gulf of power between them and the Switch means a greater sacrifice of fidelity had to me made. By comparison the PS4/XB1 consoles targeted by MK11 are much closer to the Switch's hardware spec. So there was less to sacrifice to hit an acceptable performance level. Which is something we've been seeing in ports for 35+ years.
The thing is, we are comparing the older wiser versions of the characters vs the new origins version of the characters. In Mk11 they have already fought with years of anguish, while Mk1, their pain is just starting. It's like comparing a sapling vs a tree. Both have its beauty in the time they are thought. Mk1 Mileena is my favourite because the gold platings show the regal aesthetic more. However, the Mk1 Sektor and Cyrax look like action figures... But still makes sense because they haven't been upgraded yet like the first iron man suit.
What do you mean? Mk11 is technically set at the start of mk1. The only characters are battle hardened are Johnny cage, the mk kids and jax. Rest of the cast are brought from the past and are technically starting fresh as well.
I love how ,all the main characters stances from mk1 are reflecting their nature .loved Shang tsung Liu ,mama sindel and her daughters,Baraka ,syzoth, lei mei and Raiden.
@@sebatheepik idk, something abotu him not being a mindless blood thirty beast man and instead being an ex merchant fighting for the atleast a cure for his people does something to improve his image
the fluidity in the graphics of MK1 is so dope. Raiden's hand shaking and facial expression as the thunder god powers course through his body, Baraka's Tarkat being a real affliction, Sindel Sindel Sindel, Super Smug ShangTsung checking out his magics more than you in idle stance,....The expressions bring so much life to these characters.
That's Because Mk1 Raiden is Still Human etc . I feel if Mk11 Raiden met him aka Old Raiden we see in mk1 he would Teach him how to better control the Amulet.
I feel like the best way to describe both games is mk11 is very far into the story obviously and everyone is just so very old and pretty much the same and remains the same throughout mk9 and mk10 and mk11 but mk1 being the refresh of the timeline it is just makes things so much younger and newer but at the same time keeps elements like for instance raiden. I love the new young raiden and how patient he is and respectful it’s great. I really get a father son duo dynamic from raiden and liu kang in this new timeline with liu kang giving off maybe dad vibes which since he created them I guess is kinda true
I love how MK11 Fire God Lui is still bouncy and energetic while MK1 Fire God Lui is more reserved and Flowing, it's basically stating that Lui after absorbing Raiden was still figuring out his powers snd by the tine of MK1 Lord Lui is nore calm and powerful its so awesome seieng the change
and also the new era is way more peaceful than mk11's universe specifically for the earthrealm characters they didn't have as much deadly battles as they had in other games
If you watch the separate ending cinematics of the Kombatants, you will see that Hanzo Hasashi returns to the new timeline. Not as scorpion but as a protege of smoke.
I was surprised Geras didn't have a line to Kuai Liang as Scorpion that went something like, "In prior timelines, your student Hanzo held the Scorpion mantle." Or a line to Bi-Han that went something like, "In prior timelines, Kuai Liang earned the Sub-Zero mantle after you died."
I honestly prefer the art style of MK11, however MK1 feels a lot more like a movie. Like, their wardrobe is something which would be used irl in a movie set, and isn't something which would hinder the actors too much
For the Tarkatans, it seems like they took a lot of inspiration from the Blade movies. They look just like the vampires, especially Mileena with that split mouth
Gotta love Mk1 Liu Kang here, he really sold on "the god that gave up his power" ( "god" here means Titan). He looks very humble and his new stance is calm & collected, great contradiction to his mk11 counterpart considering how wise he must has been in the latest game.
Mileena had such a downgrade in mk1. idk why they made her jaw unhinge, no other tarkatans have that. She’s supposed to be a mix of sexy & disgusting, in mk1 she’s just disgusting.
It’s interesting to compare such different takes on art style and also age. In MK11 it’s all of their final appearances or as they are after years of Kombat. MK1 is a restart so you get some literal new faces as well as just much younger familiar faces. It’s somewhat confusing but interesting.
If you don't believe MK1 is more detailed, look at Sindel. 13:30 Mk11 she looks like a shiny plastic doll. MK1 she has incredible detail she looks human.
My takeaways from this is that MK1 has better hair and skin textures and the lighting is a huge improvement over MK11 but the overall models and the photo-realistic faces in MK11 look leagues better than the handcrafted look of MK1. The overall designs of the characters are great in both I my opinion but I still prefer the more busy look of the MK11 roster but I do like the pared down look of the MK1 roster due to nostalgia. Also their idle animations really help deliver a lot of character to the kombatants in MK11 instead of just standing there like they do in MK1. Also victory animations for a vast majority of the cast in MK11 feel really cool and cinematic compared to MK1's more pared down animations. Also they did Geras dirty in MK1 by slimming him down from the tank he was in MK11. I wish we could see JCVD with the MK11 photo realistic face.
To be fair mk1 is basically a reset So it makes sense their costume is simpler like simple martial art kinda like uniform As lots of the characters just kinda started in the story
I just LOVE the robots with their classic look. I simply can't think of a better design. It's just like Darth Vader, Robo Cop or Master chief. They figured out their look like pretty much since the beginning. The ones from 11 look like edgy, over the top, generic robot, idk
I like a lot more MK11 artstyle it uses a lot of shiny metal and shadows, meanwhile MK1 depends a lot more on fabrics and light sources. I don´t know if it is because of the lightsources in MK1 compared to MK11 but I think skin texture looks a lot better on MK11
Siento que el aspecto asiático a Sindel no le va, prefiero la del 11, mucho mejor, a algunos personajes los desmejoraron muchísimo, otro ejemplo es Tanya, para mi el diseño mas horrible que pudieron hacer.
I definitely like the mk11 models and the depth added to them by the lighting and shadows, and all the extra crevices and crevices there me be in the skin like the comparison for Baraka. But I will say mk1 has gorgeous visuals and stunning stages. And I do think SOME of the outfits for many of the characters had far more intention behind it. Like the comparison with mileena’s outfits, her mk1 attire has so much more purpose and personality and is far superior. The in game graphics and textures are also more superior in mk1, but that doesn’t correlate with the actual models.

Geras MK11= Mike Tyson Geras MK1= Arnold Schwarzenegger 🤔
I mean the character design un MK1 was done more in a more simple style as a reference to the old games.
IMO i like more the designs of MK1 for how simple they are, You can see every detail of their outfits and enjoy every detail of it while on MK11 they have the same problem that modern super heroes movies has: Take a simple design and just add a bunch of lines, stripes, metal and black to it to make it "cool"
I like the designs of Sub Zero(Kuai Liang),Johnny Cage,Sindel and Shang Tsung in MK11
And the Designs of Kitana,Tanya,Geras and Reptile looks way better in MK1 except Tanya because she wasn't in Mk11 but she looks better than she does in MKX
mk11 is bitter.
I mean i wouldn't go into battle without some protection
MK1's skin textures and color range is range is definitely a big step up. The characters and the game as a whole have a toned down style. Less bulky, slimer, and simpler designs overall. For some it works, for others I like the MK11 designs more. I think the same for idol poses. I think MK until 11 had terrible idle poses and MK11 was a big step up in animation quality. I think most poses in 1 are good, 11 still had some bad ones, but i do like the good mk11 poses more than the best ones in 1. So overall pretty competitive visual design in these games
Skin textures appear worse.
even though mk11 had more victory poses for fighters, mk1 poses look a lot more badass to me
The models of mk1 are fantastic but idk man, I don't think any scorpion outfit will ever beat mk11 for me.
Crazy how much better their idle stances got in MK1
I will simply object. No
I agree
They move waaaay less and more realistic
They are not showing off of doing random animations like screaming and shit
They are more focused on the opponent
Better? Nah
That's subjective, I personally liked the extra idle animations and flourishes over the static poses we got in Mk1, imo it adds more to the character.

It’s funny that in a Scorpion-Smoke interaction, they mentioned Hanzo as their newest member. We might see some cooking in the next game.

MK1’s presentation is overall way better, but alot of the victory outros in 11 are so much better. Liu Kang’s idle stance also got majorly downgraded. I’m really gonna miss the 3 line intros too
I'm going to miss those 3 intros too, but his idle animation isn't a downgrade he's a God now so it makes sense to change his idle
The outros I'm gonna miss the most. Tired of seeing the same ones everytime I win a match . I hate how we payed 70$ for a watered down game .

MK11 has better character models plus cooler outro animation, although the intro is a bit repetitive and the background isn't that great but the muscle, clothes and faces of characters are super cool
MK1 on the other hand was super vibranr, with lightning improvement fits for my eyes.

I think we can all agree that both Mk 1 and Mk 11 Shang Tsungs are top tier portrayals of him 🔥🔥🔥
Agreed. Shang Tsung always looked ass in all mk games. The way NRS designed him in mk11 and mk1 is just perfect
Not a fan of her gorilla hair tho
yessss. something about her face model in 11 seemed off to me. she’s looks great in 1
11 Sindel is better
@@MilkshakeGuruTTV Sindel and Li Mei are supposed to look similar because they had the same person for face models; Kelly Yu
You nailed it.
Why does mk 11 look better but mk1 is still harder to run
@@jmgonzales7701 MK11 graphics already are awesome so to say which one looks "better" is mainly a subjective opinion. For me MK1 looks and feels better, much more details, colors, shadows, movements, etc. at the same time, specially in the stages, and that means a lot since MK11 still looks and feels superb.
@@Wen6543 really? Hmm idk. I think mk 11 looks good due to the shading.
So I think those things are the reason why they take the game a lot more harder to run with
Winning pose in MK11 is much much better

Kung Lao's idea for his blade hat is just genius😂
I actually really like the more reserved designs for the Earthrealm characters in MK1.
I also love the designs in MK11, but it feels a lot more like a set of comic book characters than fantasy martial artists.
I mean makes sense since MK1 is more like the origin story when MK11 it's been a decades of fighting against the other realms and various evil gods and conquers.
@ThePatxiao you're right about that
@@ThePatxiao The past versions of the MK11 characters, which are the ones I have minor issues with, are from MK2 and just before MK3.
Mk11 character models still better in every way.
The MK1 special effects are so good by comparison. Lui Kang's Fire, Reptile's acid, Sub-Zero's ice, etc. All rendered beautifully. 11 isn't bad by any means but its clear they only wanted to push it further than that game ever did when it came to 1.
Yeah, the latest generation of consoles allowed to use really dynamic lighting that MK11 just can't really match.
"It's made with the Switch version in mind."
There is nothing supporting this at all.
But still makes sense because they haven't been upgraded yet like the first iron man suit.
about time someone gets it
Let’s also not forget the different styles and aesthetics that each game possesses.
