Yes. Would've been even funnier if when the mom was questioning the dad about getting the bb guyn, the dad replied "santa sent it as a replacement for the lamp... unless you prefer the original arrangement...." Would've fit the theme of realism with families and how parents passive-aggressively tit-for-tating some of their compromises.

I love this movie because it really helps you remember how Christmas was when you were a kid. It was just magical and everyone had that one present they wanted more than anything in the world. And the fact that the dad was the one who wound up getting him the BB gun, without consulting his wife, made it feel even more special because just because he wasn't paying attention doesn't mean he wasn't listening.

Hey Addie. Also wanted to have a little tidbit. The scene at the end of the movie in the Chinese restaurant the mom's reaction to the duck was real. The director did not tell them that it was going to be a duck with full head and neck. And that was a surprise also the chopping off of the neck was not revealed to the cast. So all of moms reactions were genuine. Fun fact

Seeing the Bandits with xx on their eyes, made me think of my nephew, Bryan. Bryan always had a stoic expression on his face growing up. His parents wanted to emphasize Jesus at Christmas, so they told him that there was no Santa Clause. They did explain to him where the character originated. They explained who St. Nicholas was and that he lived centuries ago.
All was well until Bryan started school. Of course, when the other kids started talking about Santa, Bryan would "set them straight". That didn't go over well. His parents got a call from the teacher explaining that Bryan was upsetting some of the kids, AND their parents. So, they sat him down and exlained how other parents wanted their kids to believe in Santa. They told him that if the topic of Santa came up, he shouldn't talk about St. Nicholas living centuries ago and that he shouldn't disabuse the kids of their belief.
So, it happened one day that they were out Christmas shopping at the mall. As they were making a purchase, the clerk tried to engage this stoic little boy and make him smile. She asked him, "Are you ready for Santa to come?" Without changing his expression, Bryan replied, "Santa Clause is dead. But, we don't talk about it."
To this day they have an ornament on their tree. Santa Clause...with xx on his eyes.

Little trivia tidbit: The way they pulled off the tongue-frozen-to-metal-pole gag was a little hole in the pole and suction inside the pole. From the side view of the camera, the tongue being put up to a hole with suction couldn't be seen. The kid did a great job of looking like he was in pain (and panic). You mentioned all the Wizard of Oz references, and that's because it came out in 1939, and this movie is set in 1940, so it would have been quite popular at the time. For the record, they should have just poured warm water over Flick's tongue. Clearly the fire department didn't send their best... for the sake of comedy, of course.
I think I was officially 'old' when I started to really enjoy getting socks as a gift.
I had a pink bunny outfit not too dissimilar from Ralphie's, though it didn't have bunny faces on the feet. It wasn't purchased as a Halloween costume, but I only remember ever wearing it to go trick or treating one Halloween.
I was young enough not to really care if it looked goofy and, since it was one of the few opportunities I had to go trick or treating (I lived in a rural area with few houses and NO children), I wouldn't have cared how goofy I looked, anyway. Some family friends invited us to come to their street (in the city!) for Halloween, and I absolutely raked in the candy. It was glorious.
The only intense part of the evening was this one house... the owners went all out with spooky lighting and sound effects and, in order to get your candy, you had to take it out of a bowl being held by a man, sitting in a lawn chair amongst the creepy scenery and wearing a rather fierce looking gorilla costume. I was very cautious about getting that particular piece of candy, but I persevered.
The woman who invited us just passed this morning, so... R.I.P., Judy.

You cup your hands from your face to whatever object to your tongue is stuck to and you exhale. The warm breath will take care of the problem. So, as an adult if you're ever just curious and freeze your tongue to a pole that's your exit strategy. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. As always you're awesome ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦

Yeah, the movie is set in the 1940s, my parents and stepparents grew up in the '40s and '50s, and I grew up in the '70s and we all recognize this movie as being pretty much how it was when we were kids.

Fun reaction, Addie. A Christmas Story (1983) is one of my favorite Christmas movies. My favorite part will always be when Ralphie exclaims "Oh Fudge!" and ends up with Lifebuoy soap in his mouth. Another funny scene is when the dad says "Fra-Gee-Lay", when reading the crate that contains the leg lamp. Have a happy new year, Addie.

Tongue frozen to metal object in sub zero temps : It is very real . The trick is to use lots of saliva which is at least above freezing temperature or else regular water poured onto the metal object above the tongue . you just need a few degrees warmer to free the tongue without leaving a yard of skin behind

I absolutely appreciate you putting out more Christmas movies after the holiday! I love Christmas so I don't get the "seasonal depression" most people get... until after the holiday, because I really loathe New Years, lol. So you keeping the season alive a bit longer is perfect for me. Please keep doing this in the future, lol.

I am exactly the same way. I love the lead up to Christmas, the baking, the shopping, the decorating, the anticipation (especially in our 8 y/o). Then New Year's seems like such a pointless holiday. Then when we undecorate, the house seems so empty and melancholy. With it dark so early, I get a bit depressed.

Peter Billingsley recently went to the house because they made the new movie where he is a dad and I guess the guy who owns that house now came outside and started yelling at him for signing autographs outside his house.
Peter has gone on to become a successful movie producer who works with Jon Favreau a lot and they produced Iron man and Elf where Peter has a small part at the beginning playing one of the elves, he is the one with six white puffs on his red coat and has glasses.

How you deal with the frozen tongue is: 1) Pour warm water on it to release the freeze; 2) cup your hands around your tongue and breathe into them to try and release it; or 3) pull hard and rip the outer layer of flesh off your tongue.
Personally, I don’t recommend the third option.

Fun facts : Jean Shephard - who wrote the book the film is based on - has a cameo as the angry man on line who informs Ralphie he's at the beginning and Bob Clark, a Canadian filmmaker, also directed BLACK CHRISTMAS - one of the first holiday slashers films pre- HALLOWEEN. Happy New Year Ads! xoxo

Jean Shephard was also the voice of adult Ralphie. Bob Clark was also the neighbor outside with the orange and blue hat when dad is looking at the Major Award. Note that Clarks hat is a Miami Dolphins hat that he always wore while directing. It was turned backward to hide the logo.

I watch this movie every year for Christmas, ever since I was 4. I now have the pleasure of sharing this movie with my kids, also had the chance to watch the new sequel that just came out A Christmas Story Christmas, It had all the original cast, and it was great, it made me cry and it's the first time my kids saw me cry, they didn't ask why because we had just finished the first movie just before the new one and they understood why, they got teary eyed too.

In addition to the movies you mentioned, there are Christmas specials (cartoons, Claymation, etc) that I love. Generally shorter than movie length. Thing's like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" (animated original) "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" etc.

The narrator was spot on with his voice and intonation, the movie captures so many of childhood's real moments and you're right all the kids in this are so likeable. This is one of the must watch movies every year for us just as are Scrooged, A Christmas Carol (both the 1951 and 1984 versions) and Its A Wonderful Life. The original A Miracle On 34th Street as well.

To safely unstick a tongue frozen to metal, one should pour warm water onto the metal above the tongue, to thaw it. If you just yank, you will certainly remove several layers of skin.

This is my family's go to Christmas movie always playing in the background since always on a marathon around Christmas.
The Santa & his helpers wasn't scary & weren't treating the kids bad, that was the kids point of view. You know how little children always cry when they're put on Santa's lap. That's what this was supposed to represent a child's point of view
