- Are you ready to learn a hula online? Stay tuned!
Aloha Everyone! It’s Lynn with iHula Hawaii, bringing the hula of Hawai‘i to you. We are going to learn the hula, "I Kona" all about the island of Hawai‘i. The challenge of this hula will be that it is in Hawaiian. I will have the translation listed below for you, so it would be good for you to be familiar with the English as well. This will help you to remember the order of the motions, so you can correctly tell the story in your hula.
The question of the day is… Is this the first time you tuned into iHula Hawaii to learn a hula? Or have you already learned the others with us? Please leave your comment below because I’d really like to hear what’s going on with you.
Please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already, give me thumbs up if you’ve liked this video and please share my channel with one person this week, asking them to join in learning this hula as well.
Until we see each other again, a hui hou, mahalo for tuning in and Aloha!
VIDEO TIMELINE FOR HULA TUTORIAL:
1:00 SONG BACKGROUND
1:33 INSTRUCTIONS OF HANDS - VERSE 1
2:42 FEET & HANDS IN SLO-MO WITH VOICE PROMPTS - VERSE 1
4:04 FEET & HANDS IN REAL TIME - VERSE 1 (2X)
SONG BACKGROUND:
Composed in 1929, the lyrics were given to George Naope by James Kelepolo in the early 1980s. This mele expresses the composer’s love for Kona on the island of Hawai‘i and the reason he moved there.
Using the English translation, let’s begin with the hands:
Starting with the vamp, right and left.
Verse 1:
“There at Kona”
Left up, right touch and wave down to show the land
“Are the cloud banks and calm seas”
both high wave together and open, bring down below, wave together and apart
“Second to none”
Left on hip, r out, bring into shoulder, up and over , turn over to point and bring back towards your shoulder.
Vamp in between each verse and repeat.
For the feet we will simply kaholo right and left, starting with the vamp, followed by 8 kaholo for verse 1. We will do this in slow motion with the hands.
Starting with your vamp right 2,3,4 - left 2, 3, 4, etc.
Vamp right and left.
Now let’s dance the first verse together in real time, two times through.
TIP: Memorize the lyrics to help you tell the story of the hula. It will also help you remember the order of the motions.
I KONA by James Kelepolo
Aia i Kona kai ʻōpua i ka laʻi
There at Kona are the cloud banks and calm seas
ʻAʻohe lua e like ai me ʻoe
Second to none, you are incomparable

How is it learning this hula?
My first time FROM AFRICA...am a dance instructor at church, i want my team to worship in Hula.
Hi Lynn, I've done the previous two dances and love it! I'm from Maui and grew up doing hula but had moved to Australia 8yrs ago and I haven't been able to find any halau/classes. Since finding your channel a few days ago, I have been watching your videos and practicing non stop. Thank you for making this channel and allowing me, although half way across the world, to still be connected to to Hawai'i by the dance of hula. I can't wait to learn all of the dances you share and grow in hula as the dances increase in difficulty and complexity to share the history of Hawai'i!
Aloha MalenaChristine - sorry for the delay in responding. Oh, you're a local gal living in Australia! I really appreciate your response and sharing how you are enjoying my channel and how it's filling your desire to learn the hula and connecting you back to the islands.
Did you dance hula at all while you were living here?
Aloha e Lynn and MalenaChristine,
I just found your channel Lynn. What a blessing. Thank you! Like MalenaChristine I grew up in Hawai’i and moved to Australia with my ʻohana almost three years ago. I haven’t been able to find any hulau’s or hula classes here in Western Aus also, so mahalo for creating your channel so that we can dance hula. Also, It’s so nice to see other people from Hawaiʻi here in Australia. xx cheers 😊🤙
