i have stood 1.5 meters away from an 8000hp nirto drag car and when its starts your eyes begin to burn and you cant breath because the car takes its all. when they give it some gas you feel the power run through your body. one of the best feeling i have ever experienced.
I was stood next to one of these monsters when they were about to fire it up,I wondered why everyone else took a step back,I soon found out when I could feel every cylinder firing like I was being poked in the chest.Amazing.
@PoesKlap133 its truly breath taking, literally...Its so loud it shakes the ground and you can feel your heart shaking around in your chest, it looks like a cartoon how fast those go, you can feel the intense heat from many yards away, I live about 200 miles away from the gator national and I dont remember how much I paid to get in, but with the hours I spent in traffic trying to get to the drag race was worth it after just one pass of the top fuel cars
seating the clutch =]. WOT is loud as piss when they do let the motor warm up and actually seat it, just idling those things are a beast! amazing a powerglide can handle such raw power too. thanx for posting!
Me and my Dad and Brother go to NHRA in Norwalk Ohio. It is amazing seeing those cars go by at like 300mph. we usually sit in the smaller stands near the middle of the track. My Dads always watching those cars on TV and hes like, nobody whos never been there and watches on TV don't even know how loud that really is. My Grandpa Lou Sattelmaier who just past away was in the sonic thunder jet funny car. My Dad was by the starting line checking the tires most of the time!
The most thrilling yet terrifying form of motorsport there is. Just blows your mind. I've tried to describe to friends what it's like to be trackside, but the superlatives run dry! Words are inadequate.
I can remember takingmy buddy to Epping, NH for IHRA and he almost had a heart-attack when they fired up the top fuel car we were watching in the pits. They actually have signs posted that say if you have heart issues or a pace maker...do not get near it. It rocks your insides when they tap the gas....IT IS beyond sick!!!!
Here's a couple interesting things to keep in mind about Top Fuel cars; 1) In a 1/4 mile run that lasts less than 5 seconds, the engine only makes around 700 to 800 revolutions of the crankshaft under load. That's it. Then they rebuild it. 2) Say you had a 200 mph capable supercar (Ferrari F50) up to speed and you cross the start line at 200MPH with a Top Fueler waiting to go. The instant the F50 touches the start line, the Top Fueler gets the green light. The F50 goes by doing 200MPH.....
They actually are. The guy standing behind the dragster, check the yellow thing around his neck, it's hearing protection. I saw another guy to the right with the same.
It is the best sound in the world, but let's not forget the smell! Their power is estimated between 7-8.5khp, there are dynos that can handle the power, just no top fuel engine that can stay together at full throttle long enough to measure output.
When I was about 14, my father took fam and friends to the Winter Nats and we stayed in the pits for quite some time running from pit to pit catching all the warm-up sessions we could. Finally we got to a pit that had some REAL testing to do and the gas masks popped out. We didn't bring any so we just stuck it out. At the time I had pretty bad asthma... but there was no way in hell I was going to give up a front row spot to 8000 hp.
man last summer at norwalk/summit racing park, me n my friends got locked in the gate right behind where everybody was doin there burnouts, and tony schumacer came up to stage and did his burnout, we got pelted by hot rubber, our eyes were burning from all the nitro, and i was so sunburnt, but i loved every minute of it lol
@rexman971 You're absolutely right - no TV coverage can possibly do that noise justice. My Grandpa is Al Hanna, who was in the Eastern Raider jet funny car. We used to run against your Grandpa all the time.
@304teddy Hell, that would be like me saying 440 chryslers had Hemi heads because some aftermarket manufacturer made a kit to put Hemi heads on it. Which in fact one company did. Or 440s had splayed valves, etc. Or big block Chevys had 18 degree heads.
All of these teams use "aftermarket" hemi's. They are machined from a block of billet aluminum, they are produced from companies like TFX. Other than the bodies and paint schemes and badges they are pretty much all the same with different small parts and various tunings applied by the chiefs but the days of a Ford, versus a Chevy, versus a Dodge were left behind in the 70's.
You know, I stopped to think about it, and for most of the movie while it is 'idling' (if you can call it that), you can close your eyes and almost believe it sounds like a WW2 fighter plane footage, with the machine guns going off non-stop. I don't think I'm too far off - Imagine the massive explosions in that engine. Just IDLING, it must make more HP than my car does at its peak!
Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the pistons. (cut and pasted from Top Fuel facts)
Yes, they mess it up that quick, you can actually see cylinders dropping at the end of the track. Lots of pressures inside these engines, that are built to be as light as possible. But, they have a science to it, 45 minutes to re-build...
@xhikomarux Actually these monsters put out less emissions than Hybrid does. (They Run on Methinol and Nitro which only produce a bit of steam and a small amount of carbon) Yet the EPA still has Engines like them Banned for Road Use.
wow dat is awsome. my dad is an engineer and there is a screw in your engine that controlls how many horsepower a car has. so on a mitsubishi galant (2008) he turned it from 280hp to 690+. we hit like 250 on the new jersey turnpike. THAT WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i stood near the stageing lane at the nitro jam when it came through ,and let me tell ya' it was gnarly!! i had to turn my head when that beast launched!! it's awesome!!! it's like seeing a controlled atom bomb going off ..crazy as shit ..
That's so cool how the wheels expand near the end when they spin up. My guess would be due to the mass of the thick rubber pulling outward as it spins up. How efficient are these engines? As in, how much of the nitro methane is burnt in the cylinders?
@MurphyMonster no doubt plus when they run with all the vibrations fuck the spa top fuel passes are the best 4sec full body massages with the pressure waves blasting through you
@bad65stang My neighbor has one. One day a buddy was over and an old beat up vw beatle was pulling into the street. At that moment they fired up the top fuel (there was a race in a few days). My buddy said and I quote.... "damn that vw needs a muffler" Long story short. People who don't know will have absolutly NO CLUE what the noise is.
@Dettengines They are lucky to get a couple 1/4 mile passes out of em. But you know what its not about durability and longevity, its about building the most powerful internal combustion engine to move a car down a 1/4 mile in the fastest time. Just to put it in perspective, it takes over 500 hp to just turn the blower on the engine, and each injector is about the equivalent to a showerhead going full blast. Think it works out to .042 mile per gallon, on fuel that costs $40+ a gallon.
Yup...ever hear 8000hp rev infront of you? You jump about every time. I'm surprised the video was as long as it was with the nitro blowing the camera operators face like it was. Something everyone needs to experience at least once in their life. :)
It doesn't get any more extreme than this! A fuel engine is a thing of beauty!!
THANKS for the warmup video, these cars are really amazing
i have stood 1.5 meters away from an 8000hp nirto drag car and when its starts your eyes begin to burn and you cant breath because the car takes its all. when they give it some gas you feel the power run through your body. one of the best feeling i have ever experienced.
TOP FUEL FTW
The pure power these things put out... simply incredible!
These things are incredible to see in person. Until you've seen one, it's hard to get a feel for how awe-inspiringly powerful they are.
man i love when they start them in the pits
the smell of nitro and the vibration its just awesomee
finally.... someone who knows how to video and audio. thanks
I was stood next to one of these monsters when they were about to fire it up,I wondered why everyone else took a step back,I soon found out when I could feel every cylinder firing like I was being poked in the chest.Amazing.

The smell from that is just the best!
I love it when these things take off cuz its like a freaking shockwave hitting you in the face
I can remember takingmy buddy to Epping, NH for IHRA and he almost had a heart-attack when they fired up the top fuel car we were watching in the pits. Great video. My blood runs cold everytime I see those mad things!
miller, good call...i love it when the tires ballooned..
I dunno about you guys but standing next to one of these cars during a test is almost a spiritual experience... WOW!
i always think its funny how it effortlessly spins those huge heavy wheels and tyres up to around 50mph and the engine revs don't even change.
that start up is amazing
Dick LaHaie, The Snake, and Dixon are three of the coolest people on the planet.
It sounds even better in person!!!
the exhaust is so strong o these things your eyes will water ahhh love that shit
thats the sound of pure power
i just love how that guy puts his foot on the tire and then makes it spin lmao
F*&%in love it when the nitro kicks in!
I have also been to route 66 raceway in the pits. I was there for Indy 300 but im sure your in the dragstrip facility. Nice vid brought back memories.

Look at Larry walking around like he knows somthin!!
thats one beautiful sound :)
i know a guy who worked for a topfuel team those cars are crazy during the entire distance of the race the engine only turns about 400 times
Same here when they brought one to a local car show. Only i KNEW how loud it was, and stood next to it on purpose! lol
yall realize the first time those tires were rolling he was switching gears......soooooo much power omg
They actually are. The guy standing behind the dragster, check the yellow thing around his neck, it's hearing protection. I saw another guy to the right with the same.

Wow, at 2:25 when the tires are being spun up, you can see the centrifugal force stretching them thinner and taller.
I cant belive that guy is holding his hand on the mags you sir are braver than me
man last summer at norwalk/summit racing park, me n my friends got locked in the gate right behind where everybody was doin there burnouts, and tony schumacer came up to stage and did his burnout, we got pelted by hot rubber, our eyes were burning from all the nitro, and i was so sunburnt, but i loved every minute of it lol
i am a car guy and that scares me but thats AMERICANfor ya 8000hp and eight cylinders go baby go
@rexman971 You're absolutely right - no TV coverage can possibly do that noise justice. My Grandpa is Al Hanna, who was in the Eastern Raider jet funny car. We used to run against your Grandpa all the time.
the fumes gets my eyes are teared up lol.
The day a civic sounds like this is the day i buy one
@304teddy Hell, that would be like me saying 440 chryslers had Hemi heads because some aftermarket manufacturer made a kit to put Hemi heads on it. Which in fact one company did. Or 440s had splayed valves, etc. Or big block Chevys had 18 degree heads.
been to Houston 20yrs. in a row -still gives me a woody--and so do the force girls, but don't tell john hed kick my ass --haha
He'll take the Force girls giving you a stiffy as a compliment.

Actually, 8.600 horsepower. As seen in the Don Garlits Museum Of Dragsters.
Honestly, it's a fucking bomb.
the funny thing is the guy behind the dragster hes just chillin
Thats true muscle power right there.
the amount of noise being generated has to in excess of 145-155dbs enough to rupture eardrums completely
Yes, they mess it up that quick, you can actually see cylinders dropping at the end of the track.

Oh, he WOULD cry! That nitro-methane exhaust can be quite a pain on the eyes! ;)
Every drag racing fan should thank Mopar for developing the Hemi.
Wow...with 8000 hp, its amazing it doesnt do a back flip from the line !
2:16 the best feeling ever when they do that
just love these things truly awsome
He then turns and walks back to his buddy and say, "Someday I'll be deaf...and now that's fine by me."
@xhikomarux Actually these monsters put out less emissions than Hybrid does.
(They Run on Methinol and Nitro which only produce a bit of steam and a small amount of carbon)

It's not a deafening loud until they go for the 4 sec run, LOL. God damn I wish I could see them again.
I talked to a guy who works with dragsters, he said that they consume more fuel per second than a fully loaded Boeing 747 ;)
@mageac are you sure you went to Japan?
wow dat is awsome. my dad is an engineer and there is a screw in your engine that controlls how many horsepower a car has. so on a mitsubishi galant (2008) he turned it from 280hp to 690+. we hit like 250 on the new jersey turnpike. THAT WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the tyres were stretching lmao. awesome
I remember when I was standing over the exhaust pipes of the Blue Max when They were revving up the Engine and the ground shaking under My feet.
One of the qualifications of that job is "you must already be deaf to work around this car"
i love how th esound they make when they start up
that's right
the sound is unbelievable
and you start crying from the methanol and the nitro xD just great
If it thats loud now, imagine when the VTEC kicks in!!!
And to think... Only 8 cylinders...
Even if there were 10... 8,000 HP is Un-Fathomable!!!
i stood near the stageing lane at the nitro jam when it came through ,and let me tell ya' it was gnarly!! i had to turn my head when that beast launched!! it's awesome!!! it's like seeing a controlled atom bomb going off ..crazy as shit ..

And someone sits in there and plants their foot !!...gutsy....
miller light is so damn good
love the smell of Nitro-Methane in the morinin!!!
@schulzy12012 yeah when i was at motorvate melbourne the started two top fuel's phil lammatina and bob sheperd it was difficult to breathe but amazing
15,000hp and up. depending on the jet type usually 10k for small private jets to 30k for supersonic
@MurphyMonster no doubt plus when they run with all the vibrations fuck the spa top fuel passes are the best 4sec full body massages with the pressure waves blasting through you
thats sounds awsome on a 2000watt stereo
They use around 26 gallons from warm up to the end of the track
ha! i knew it was the 4 second barrier! thanks man!! how does running a shorter run make it safer though?
the sound of 8000horsepower
@loudpipesavelives69 - It's estimated based on fuel usage and other factors.
Awesome power that, wow!
i want that engine in my golf right now!
@bad65stang
My neighbor has one.
One day a buddy was over and an old beat up vw beatle was pulling into the street. At that moment they fired up the top fuel (there was a race in a few days). My buddy said and I quote....
"damn that vw needs a muffler"
Long story short. People who don't know will have absolutly NO CLUE what the noise is.
miller light is so good
To bad we can not smell through the net the smell of Nitro, smells like victory.
@Dettengines

Love top fuel by the time they are 25 feet from the starting line they at 75 mph already (approximately)
about how much does something this beautiful cost?... and how much would you say it cost per run?
F*ck yeah! I've been there. The greatest experience ever!
Yup...ever hear 8000hp rev infront of you? You jump about every time. I'm surprised the video was as long as it was with the nitro blowing the camera operators face like it was. Something everyone needs to experience at least once in their life. :)
Nothing on earth like a nitro motor burping. will make grown men run in fear. true monsters.
This thing beats a Honda at idle.
NO way would I stand next to that bad boy!
@pngzng1
Hell no it isent..
The engine in one of those is using (on full throttle) 120 liter/km.
Or 0,26 gallon per 0,62 miles
That is awesome
