My theory on why there are more company dinners in Korea than in other countries is that Korea is largely a collaborative society. There is more a "family" oriented culture in nearly every group, among friends, companies, and of course family. This is why I love Korean culture!
We don't really have company dinners. We sometimes have scheduled hanging out time, where we'll be told a bar or a sporting event or whatever that people are going to go to. But, luckily, my company is large enough that there isn't a lot of pressure to attend. It helps that these events are "pay your own way" so they can't really force it either.
My friend, however, works for a small company (staff of 10), so she feels she has to show up, because it's really noticeable when someone's missing.
Where I live, they really don't have company dinners unless its a holiday like Chirstmas. Otherwise, most of my jobs, have unofficial happy hours where 2-3 good friends from the office get together for drinks after work. The closest thing to a 'company sponsored' happy hour was at one of my old jobs where they held happy hour every Friday in the office. They stocked the fridge with alcohol and snacks and made everyone stop working to hang out. Those were good times!
I LOVED this video! We don't have company dinners, or in our case, department/team dinners. With so many people working at home from remote locations, it's impossible to get everyone together for a meal or anything celebratory. My team has members located in southern California, northern California, Texas, Israel(!), Colorado, and I don't even know where some other team members are located. Many years ago, before work-at-home was so prevalent, we would go out to lunch maybe twice a year. Maybe.
I like my school dinners in Korea. Like you said, it's a nice chance to bond with your coworkers outside of work in a more casual atmosphere. For me, I don't get to interact much with other staff, so these outings are a good way for me to socialize with them. :)
That's just how he talks. :) I personally like it when someone isn't always rushing through every sentence.
Korean makes Brazil looks so easy and free. (Oh, doesn't look, Brazil is like that. LOL)
We don't have rules to attend this dinners. Also, is rare to all the co-workers meet, only the one who are really friends use to hang out. I don't even think we do dinners, dinners here are too serious, we use to have lunch. If all the company decide to do something, we really love to do this on the weekend and join in a Barbecue, from the morning to the early evening. We like to party a lot. ^^'
When the boss sticks around, it's usually to hear grievances that won't be aired unless subordinates are drunk. A good boss is expected to take note of the message, not the rude messenger.
Sometimes i go to these sometimes i don't. Fortunately as 백인/왜국인 my coworkers respect that i don't always want to go. If someone retires or is leaving i always go. Maybe it is a culture thing but in 경남 ive never had the bill being split. Always the boss taking care of it or the oldest person present. Sometimes i wish they would let me pay.
In America I've only had co-workers who went to bars togesther, not so much a dinner, but my Korean boss is taking us to his friends Korean barbeque tomorrow so I'm super excited!
Keith this is the best video yet! Thank you for this one
I like the knotty pine walls & trim in that party room. I remember when knotty pine walls and panels were considered a bit blasé; however, it's much more expensive nowadays. People with knotty pine in their 1960's remodeled houses have had their houses broken into by thieves who steal the knotty pine.
I think this is true lol. I went out with some korean friends and naturally we ate and went noraebang, It was like 3am and I politely said I was leaving. They all looked shocked and said "So soon?!"
It use to be in korea that even if you say you don't drink ppl would still make you drink A LOT but over the years so many deaths came about because of ppl making others drink so much, that it is not pressured for ppl to drink anymore. It still happens on some occasions but no where near as much as it use to.
In Portugal is quite the same thing with the companies having these dinners! some do and others don't! it is pretty common dinners like these in special occasion like Christmas or if someone decides set up a nice coworkers dinner! usually we do in a tradicional portuguese restaurant with good home made food and a lot of red wine! then we go to round 2 for a good coffe and then beer at some pub, the 3rd round is go to a bar or pub for fun and more drinking till 4 or 5 AM!
hmm at my work place, we don't have work dinners often. i work at a bank and the only time we have work dinners are for when someone leaves (quits/maternity leave) or Christmas! sometimes these dinners are paid for by the bank/branch manager and sometimes we all chip in. there are some of us who try to get together sometimes for dim sum or coffee or the like because we are closer but otherwise, thats pretty much it! i'm from canada btw! :)
Keith is good! but it is always better to have Keith and Songa both in the video
So... if we consider seoulistic a company... you should go out for dinner with Songa and Boram! =)
I wish my company would have such dinners, I really would mind as long as we get to know eachother,as for showing respect for the boss is only natural...^^
Good question, I wanted to ask the same!
Bro, you guys have helped me out so much!
Korean. It sorta works in Korea. Doubt it'll work in Ireland.
Kind of true, but bosses are still bosses at company dinners. sometimes it's pretty stiff when bosses are there. a lot looser when boss leaves ;)
that sounds like fun! I hear some newer Korean companies tech companies are like that :) BEER :D
if I don't like drinks, but like shoots can I take that instead? ore do i have to have the same as everyone else?
i don't but he looked like he had several rounds...interesting video thanks for sharing
company's dont rlly hold dinners around here as it cuts in there profit margin so we just plan them our self whitout the bosses :)
that's so funny, my nickname is songa. never thought someone else would have the same..
In my country Unesco would not be considered a "company."
Wen0110 You look extremely tired and possibly drunk or high
But what if you don't drink? Can you still attend those dinners without drinking alcohol?
