- A quick tutorial on how to correctly lower the convertible top on a First Generation Camaro or Firebird.
With my 67 Vert with electric top I put a towel in between the window creases to minimise any scratches from the plastic rubbing.
Thanks for all the tops, this is awesome information.
The 69 owners manual includes this recommendation, also for the 68-72 A body cars.
Thanks for the information ❤
THANKS. I remember reading this a long time ago but never was a proper video. I plan to share the crap out of this.
You’re welcome
Sweet thank you for the video on how to lower the top on the first gens!!!
Thank you
Great video, thanks.
Thank you for this tip. I always struggle to get the boot to stay in place. This will let the top sit lower in the well.
You’re welcome
@@smitteninthemitten3777 where is te switch in this car?
@@alainmossinkoff3464 under the dash by your knees under the steering wheel.
Thanks. I was wondering how that rip got there on my top. Now I can get the boot to fit right.
You’re welcome.
Awesome LED taillights by the way! Do you recommend unzipping the plastic rear window by the way before lowering the top?
Mine doesn’t have a zipper?
@@smitteninthemitten3777 I know my dad's 65 Buick had a zipper for the rear window. You could drive with the top up and the rear window open. Thought all GM cars had zippers for the rear window but obviously it is not the case.
Thanks for the information. I have a 67 Firebird Convertible. The electric switch just stopped working today. It raised the top into place but now won't work to retract the top. In one of your comments below, you indicated that you can disable the electric by disconnecting the hydraulic pistons. How do you do that?
@@buddybyrd3870 , it’s as easy as taking the bolts out that connect the pistons to the top mechanism. Presto. You now have a manual top. Two bolts.
@@smitteninthemitten3777 Thank you. I'm not very mechanically savvy but I'll give this a try.
perfect video for a manual top. for those with electric tops? I wish there was an alternative to getting out of the car and folding extra material.. kinda erases the convenience of having the electric top.. know what I mean?
You still do the same thing with an electric. This is an electric top, that I disabled and made manual.
@@smitteninthemitten3777 Yes, done our 65 LeMans convertible with power top the same way for 15 years by folding the material back as I gradually lowered it, and that procedure saved the top from getting pinched.
@@smitteninthemitten3777 I have a 69 firebird with electric top and at this time It's not working. I would would love to have it as a manual.
@@robles9111, that’s easy. My car is actually an electric and I disabled it. All you need to do is disconnect the hydraulic pistons. Two bolts and you have a manual top.
Hey Smitten in the Mitten. Love your car! i just got my hands on one of these exact ones and i need to swap out my convertible top. can you pleeeease guide me towards the right direction? im looking online but so many to choose from. ..i just dont want to get the wrong material nor the wrong type... any advice would be extremely helpful . THANK YOU
Thank you. Unfortunately, I’ve never replaced a top. I think it’s pretty difficult. Good luck. I like NPD for parts.
@@smitteninthemitten3777 i appreciate that sir. Ill take alook :)
one more question Smitten in the Mitten :)
is that top Canvas or Vinyl?
@@fidelmorfin7960 I believe it’s vinyl. I didn’t install it.
@@smitteninthemitten3777 copy that dude. thanks again :)
Does it stay in place while driving, or is there a latching mechanism?
Gravity
If your top is torn on the first bow and coming off the sides, sure. If not-no.
I thought you were going to take a baseball bat and roll your back frender wells...OK
