@@Caleb.Chosen The State Fair Showdown and Wake Up and Crank were definitely on the radar. Needed a break though (short distance, early game and not to be up all night editing). Long nights will resume with SU vs Alcorn and Crankfest next week lol.
You know it’s bad when your fans aren’t hype when you’re playing. But I give Valley credit they got a decent sound.

Valley don't sound bad at all to be honest with you it's just that Jackson State sound that they been producing have been finally polished but it took them like a 3 to 4 year process to get to will Jackson State at today. I think it's a recruiting issue with Valley in my opinion because a lot of the bottom tier schools in the swac do (and I mean the bottom tier as far as popularity not quality of program) have a hard time keeping numbers or even attracting students to that school especially when you have Jackson Alcorn Grambling Southern UAPB in that immediate Louisiana Mississippi area.
Don't get to see Mississippi Valley much but enjoying this.

I love show style marching bands..there's some good ones out here..but at this point in the season any band that goes up against the boom or SU is just practice. the real show will be the boombox classic and I plan to be there.
@@djones04822 idk about that though..cause SU just took an L to TxSU...JSU was challenged an depending on who you ask they took an L in the SOUTHERN HERITAGE CLASSIC...to be real SU almost lost to FAMU an there no way that shouldve been close...I just think theres way to many good bands to only always talk about SU & JSU...
@@kalebwilliams8731 Now see I almost said that about SU and TXSU..it was a good battle but to me SU got it...but it with the Boom and TNSU..they both have a big fat round sound..I think the Boom had that raw and funky in your face edge which is why I think they get the win. I usually just sit back and roll through RUclips looking not really commenting on these battles but there's been some good ones. I'm making the trip to Jackson in November. I want to see that up close.

I'm sorry but valley sounds like a really good high school. Alot of the sections in the band just dont have a mature sound.

you're only saying that because they're small and playing within their size. They arent overblowing to compensate for their size. they sound good. No high school band can ever sound like college musicians I hate when folks say that.
@@jj3a1 no I said what i meant. They sound like a really good high school band. I never mentioned anything about loudness. I mentioned them not having a mature sound. Hell ive seen pep bands they size and smaller sounding better. They dnt sound bad, they just not as experienced as others on their horns..it show in the way they sound.

Valley sounds damn good. They arent trying to overblow to compensate for their size. Of course folks will say JSU took the W cause they're loud as hell, but that isnt anything. This was a good battle..salute to both bands. Mississippi has the HBCU band on lock right now with 3 qualtiy programs.

MVSU is tiny, especially for a SWAC band. Their size is their main issue. They're thin in key areas. That's not their fault. They just need more folks. Musically, they have a lot of control and showed more skill than JSU during this pregame affair and they sound a hell of lot better than many other bands right now. They didn't try to overblow and stayed within their range as a band. Smart band directors. ✔
But I know all people care about is power, being loud and overpowering the opposing band when it comes to these things.

@@sharonguyton9119 🙋♂️ Don't have to ask. The culture has turned into a cranking contest. Cranking aka Power. It's been like this for over 30 years now. SWAC culture started that back in the day when SU began to write more aggressive arrangements which made band members play outside of the viable scope of their instruments. The popularity of rap brought that on and fans became hooked to the power concept when those songs were played. Before the advent of rap, every band in HBCU marching band land had much more versatility musically. SWAC marching bands were just as versatile as MEAC bands. But when SU brought in the power era, everyone after that began to copy their agressive arrangement style and here we are. Historically, there's no greater band than SU in terms of sheer power. All of that power often comes at a price though which is why bands who have that aggressive culture typically have issues with tone, musicality and little to 0 use of dynamics. From a symphonic point of view, it just doesn't work.
There has become an acceptance of overblowing now and people have just become accustomed to that particular sound. When small bands and high school bands do it, it usually sounds the absolute worst. They don't have the size, so the kids who are overblowing and out of tune tend to stick out more.
So again, there's really no need to ask. This whole power thing is a SWAC/SU creation that every other band has copied over the years.
***I don't hate power bands. I just wish more SWAC bands would bring the music back instead of powering through every damn song.***

@@jheht2000 I agree I felt like they could have pushed a little bit more last year to have almost 40 if not 40. I heard them more with less trumpets in 2018 than this past year. 18 was probably the best sounding batch to come out recently in my opinion
@@DajournoTF Yes. ‘18 was definitely pushing. They had between 32-38 that year. I think if they can build their stamina like DT they will be in good shape. Focus on their core and memorization. Them boys would be some beast.

Zachariah Riley the basics are all off. They are not balanced within their sections. Breathing is off. They are overblowing, rather than filling up the horn with sound. Not articulating notes with clarity. And, the are not properly tuned; they sound very sharp.
I’m not trying to come down too hard on this band, but HBCUs have developed a reputation for having non-performing musicians. Meaning, they lack style, interpretation, basic skills, and worst of all, cannot read music. This band reflects the above sentiments. I have seen smaller bands produce better, fuller sounds.
There’s an early 99-02 clip of Norfolk State destroying FAMU when they were around 400+ members. Norfolk understood how sound travels, and how intonation will cut through volume all day long. Their band of 100-150, was able to cut through FAMs sound. Humiliating for fam, but impressive as hell for Norfolk.
Even if you don’t want to go back that far, just watch the video again. There’s a clear difference between JSU and MVSU.
Noted. I march for valley brudda.. cut off problems and overblowing are problems from last year.. and if you think those two are the same band then you’re just delusional.. just know one thing.. The Mack coming back 😏

so many people doubt valley but they really don't know its more to band than being loud try executing song musically with dynamic instead of all out fortissimo and for people to criticize so much for valley we can actually be heard for our size
