    Thank you very much for all the hard work you are putting into explaining 4AD better than I could do! I have added this video to the ganesha games channel.

    Another great video! Thank you for taking the time to run through 4AD again.
    Last night I ran my party consisting of a Warrior, Dwarf, Cleric, and Rogue, all level 4, through what turned out to be about a 50 room/corridor dungeon. These guys pretty much just rolled right over everything set in front of them without much issue. Miraculously, there were no dragons at all, but there were a few boss monsters, with the final boss being a Stone Statue. This is the first time I'd gotten one of those as a final boss, but he was handled with relative ease. The rest of the dungeon consisted of minions and vermin. A LOT of minions and vermin.
    However, the interesting part of the journey didn't come until I cleared the final room in the dungeon and was on the way back to the entrance. In the room just before reaching the entrance, I rolled a wandering monster, and wouldn't you know it. It turned out to be a Medusa. I'm sure there's plenty of people reading this right now who are already feeling my pain. Upon entering that room, my entire party was full health, except for the warrior missing a single Life point, and by now were all level 5.
    The initial interaction with the Medusa always consists of saving vs. Stone Gaze before anything else can be done. By the end of the saving rolls, all but my rogue were turned to stone. Let me rephrase this. Three of my level 5 very rich characters were now stone statues that decorated this otherwise nondescript room with no current way of reviving them. As the rogue went into action, I realized this was going to be an extremely uphill battle. He donned only a dagger, and could only hit the level 5 Medusa by rolling a natural 6.
    First roll, a 1. LOL. Ok, you should probably run now rogue. Thankfully he easily defended against the Medusa, and was ready to attack again. I rolled a 6. Nice. Then another 6. Very nice. And then a third 6 in row. And a 2 following that. With my dagger penalty, that amounted to a 19, for a total of 3 life being deducted from the Medusa. Now the monster was level 4, and after a few more rolls was finally prison shanked to death by this rogue that was otherwise largely useless for the majority of this adventure.
    After exiting the dungeon, the rogue launched a rescue mission, bringing a level 1 Cleric back to the dungeon, and having him cast Blessing on the stone statue level 5 Cleric. After that, the level 5 Cleric blessed the other two party members back to life. I paid the level 1 Cleric his 200 gold pieces and we all exited the dungeon without further incident. That experience had to be one of the most gratifying adventures I've had in any PnP game thus far. Can't wait to take this party into the abyss and beyond.

    I like how you gave the halfling the lantern.
    He may not be able to light the path...but hey! At least he can show off your shiny pretty shoes!

    I just learned about Four Against Darkness a couple of days ago, and am a novice about any of these types of games. I was losing interest at the idea of rolling for every decision, but you show that it doesn't detract from the game too much.
    Overall, this video is extremely well made! I love how you highlight each step, and show excerpts from the book. I also love your links to the printouts. I'll be heading to the library today to print out some sheets before my book comes in. Thank you for making this so easy for a novice to learn!

      Welp, I'm hooked; and, it's all your fault LOL! My party has level 4 cleric and rogue, and Level 5 elf and warrior. I'm waiting for two more books to come in, but I think the first may be pointless. It's for parties level 1-2. I may have to create a new party, or just roll for more monsters in each room/corridor. My next game will definitely have two final bosses in the last room.

    haha so I started out on my second adventure yesterday. Spent a bit of time coming up with cool names and rolled for my entrance to the dungeon.
    Was really looking forward to things.
    Then I checked for the room contents. Rolled an 11.. _Roll on the boss table._ Oh come on!! >.

      Yep. Only vermin don’t count. Funny, just last night my party earned the Ring of Gremlin Spotting. From the Lairs,Dens and Burrows adventure book. Basically means the wearer can see and fight these pesky creatures and avoid the party losing their items. They are level 1, 3d6 minions with morale -1. Best part you get 4 treasure rolls!
      Great little booklet.

      Jackthor rolled a 6 during his attack which allows him to roll again and add the results together. Check out the exploding 6 rule on page 6 of the rulebook :-)

      But he was in a corridor for 2v2 combat, so I think you're right that only 2 would have been killed. Then there would have been a morale check before the other hero would have used his attack.

    • @GrayBoardGamer
      @GrayBoardGamer  6 лет назад +1

      I thought this too, but Andrea (the author) cleared this up for me and let me know that taking out more than two enemies, with one attack, occurs in corridors also.

    • @MikeLaudie
      @MikeLaudie 6 лет назад +1

      So a summary of corridor combat would be: only the two in the front get to attack (unless you have a ranged weapon fighter or spellcaster from the back row) but they can take out unlimited enemies with rolls. However, only the two enemies in front can attack back. Is this correct?

    • @MikeLaudie
      @MikeLaudie 6 лет назад +1

      One other thing to clarify... at 11:54, was there a reason you rotated the room the way you did? I'm kind of foggy on room alignment in general. But I've tried to line up doors or corridor ends where I can. So I might have matched the two doors together and had that corridor ending in a corridor ending rather than a door.

    • @RedwoodRhiadra

      Not in the versions of D&D that predated Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Before that (and after in the non-Advanced D&D line), the non-human races were just exotic classes.
