I had the same issue. There’s nothing wrong with the mechanism itself. There’s two thin metal tabs that the ECU uses as a switch to tell the transmission to shift up or down. If you take off the shift knob and the trim bezel (takes all but a minute) and slightly bend the tabs towards the shifter, your issues will disappear. Takes no more than 5 minutes total to do.
It’s a temp fix for a bigger wear problem ig, gonna pin another commenters fix for this. For me up shifts work fine, but still have issues downshifting every now and then
i was confident this would be the issue, however how ever far i bent the up shift downwards (towards the shifter), nothing changed. might have to take it to a mechanic.
I’ve had this issue when trying to gear up, I’ve fixed it a few times by bending the metal tabs which worked for abit then it stopped again. I used electrical parts cleaner and just clicking the tab which worked again,,,, then it stopped! I eventually took appart the middle console and sprayed some electrical parts cleaner into the connector for the manual mode WHICH THEN worked since!! Definitely worth a try for anyone who has this issue
Same issue with mine accept the downshift is intermittent. Sometimes it will downshift twice on its own while I’m trying to get the switch to engage. Pretty sure it’s some electrical issue it’s not receiving the correct voltage, current signal so it won’t respond until it gets that. Mine was modified with a back up camera 2013 model and blows up headlights and the fuse for the accessory port in the cup holder all the time.
I was hoping mine wasn’t something electrical, does your shifting through the column shifter feel clunky like mine? And also damn didn’t think a simple backup camera would mess so much up…
@@bunnoy Mine has more than a few wiring jobs done on it. An engine swap that was done at a dealer poorly on top of that they hit the bumper while it was there. So to say if I keep it I’m going to be chasing gremlins for awhile. Mine only gets really clunky when I shift up into park. It gets stuck midway between and clunks into place sometimes but you couldn’t notice it by looking at it. If it’s mechanical it could mean the metal shifter is slightly misaligned two different ways for us. The Manual mode switches are just buttons though so it could mean yours was getting stuck before actually hitting the switch.
@@bunnoy A little update I drove it around today and focused on doing the same with the downshift you do with the upshift. It seems to settle in after driving a little and then it responds. After moving out of manual mode it unsettles the position and I have to work it over a few times before it starts to downshift on command. I can clearly feel where it is somehow getting stuck but feels more spongy. I was able to have some fun through the valleys and canyons but after stopping at the local store and going back home it completely refused to downshift at all hahaha force me to use the paddles again. If I was planning on keeping it I'd just replace the shifter assembly.
@@FrontManagement621 be persistant! It was the same with me, and it eventually will give more way. once in a while it still acts up, but lets say it acts funny 2 out of 45 shifts. Good you got a good drive out of it though! and yeah, a replacement of the assembly prob would help, but I'm broke and stubborn. :P
@@bunnoy Yeah I was messing around with it for months trying to see if there was any specific movement that would work. But I guess it's just been beat on too much and needs some proper work done to it. Which I intended to do till the new GR86 came out. I know the Toyota techs themselves weren't reliable at the dealer I had to send it to for the warranty engine swap hahaha.
If I had the money I would have traded this in for a manual/do a manual swap now!, the AT version did serve its purpose being a daily and dealing with 4hrs of stop and go traffic each day!

I’ll try this, thank you!
Ooh will take a look at this next time I head to the garage, thanks!

@@bunnoy The tabs definitely have a sweet spot. Too close and it will shift twice if possible. Too far and it will struggle to shift once.

Looking forward to see more of your 86's videos!!!
I’m glad other people have the same problem 😅

The most unuseful video ever
lol you're problem is that you bought a automatic
