I worked a rural area. Usually running 2 on a night shift, maybe 3 every now and then for a small county size. Verbal judo and physical fitness. I've had people yelling and cursing then asked "Sir/ma'am... Can I ask you a question? Am I yelling, or cursing or disrespecting you? Okay, can we have a conversation like adults and figure out what's going on?" I've used that so much. 95% of the time it relaxed the situation. Have a set boundary when you need to go hands-on and trust your judgement.
Fortunately Hulk didn't turn green....

This is why you work out daily. Train in something other than BJJ. Be prepared. Above all, try to de-escalate.
Is there a victim? Minimize the number officers visibly to help de-escalate. Attempt calling Brother/Crisis. He refuses wants to get help himself. Ultimately…Leave! No Crime, no threat to self/others…

These videos are NOT funny and YES should be used to train law enforcement. As a retired psych RN BSN, there should be one person speaking to him in an effort to de-escalate. All this should be heavily taught in the academies. Definitely keep distance. Yes, each officer should have their own task to form the plan. Thank you for what you’re doing!
Besides the distance they let him get to them; I feel like they did a pretty decent job deescalating this dude.

100% reach out to his brother. Its easy to say what should have happen. You need a supervisor who is capable of taking charge of this situation. You can’t have 6-7 guys standing looking at each other for who is gonna take charge or make the first move. But you guys hit the nail on the head. Good discussion!

Brother, help me understand the ire in your comment. Nobody is making fun of this vet in crisis. Obviously he is hurting and using alcohol and stimulants to mask the pain. Regardless, the cops have a job to do. I don’t diminish your service to our country or the sacrifices you’ve chosen to make. One thing you need to understand though, cops have PTS also after all we’ve seen and done. I too have lost LE brothers to murder and suicide and have seen a lot of heinous death and mayhem in my 30 years on the job. Thank you for your service, Brother. I wish you well and much peace in your future.

On land he can scream and pet his dog all he wants. That's the point of service dogs for veterans, something you're not. I live a taxpayer funded furnished apartment like him, 50. I go out 4 in the morning to get cigarettes, walking, because my car broke down. My VA loan was cancelled because of interest rates. I had a warden, who I caused the state to pay 200,000 because I wouldn't pay probation fees, they didn't take cash. She cancelled Memorial and Veterans day because she said we were a STG.
