  • A British spy tries to work amid a pandemic lockdown.
PANDEMIC SPY is used with permission from Daniel D. Moses. Learn more at danielmoses.com.
Fisher is a British spy who enjoys his work, taking much pride in the ins and out of spycraft. He works with his partner Penny, meeting regularly in a public park to exchange information and keep tabs on the latest developments.
But when a national lockdown happens, he finds the new restrictions -- enforced distance requirements, shops closed, bans on public seating -- to get in the way of his work. So he and his partner must adapt, though the spy finds the new normal a little harder than most.
Written and directed by Daniel D. Moses, this short comedy offers a cheeky take on both the recent global health crisis and the spy film genre. It takes the real details of how life changed at face value, treating them with respect. But the film has fun with how these details affect the tropes of the espionage thriller, making for an entertaining film that is both breezy and witty in tone and execution.
Well-paced and often with a winking nod, the storytelling features moments with Fisher directly addressing the camera, chatting affably about his work. He enjoys performing the work of spycraft with finesse and flair and proudly wears his dark suit and trench. But that satisfaction is challenged when he can't sit on benches with his partner or even read her expression clearly due to masking. The writing cleverly takes these details and weaves them into sustained riffs of amusement and humor.
The film appears light at first, thanks to the playfulness of the writing and directing and its lighthearted satire of espionage cliches, which are both self-important and mundane. But it's also balanced with a measured, grounded portrayal of social reality, thanks to both the naturalistic visuals and the subtly winking performance of lead actor Brooks Livermore. Together, it makes for a clever balancing act of tone that playfully takes on a challenging time in history with an eye for ironic detail and an understated but genuine feeling.
When Fisher decries how the spy community has been affected -- and how the camaraderie and friendship with his fellow agents have fallen apart as a result -- it's both a logical conclusion of the film's overall joke and a reflection of genuine sentiments felt by many. It makes PANDEMIC SPY both a fascinating postcard from a time that will be studied and reflected upon for years to come, as well as a refreshingly impish yet gently sincere take that leavens latent anxieties and lightens the mood.
