My accordion teacher, Tony Lovello...way back in the 1960's in Canoga Park, CA. I was about 11 years old and taking lessons from another guy and was just telling the kids (and parents) how good their. kids were, when they weren't. My dad got upset with him and we just drove around with my accordion in the back seat. We drive by a little strip mall that says, "Tony Lovello accordion studio." My dad was shocked. Tony was well-known to him (I had no clue) as one of the Three Suns who played all these major clubs in New York and had songs on the radio. We went inside and Tony was by himself having just finished some lessons. He told us to get my accordion and he would check me out. He put a piece of music in front of me and I played, but not single notes, I added the full chords, which stunned Tony...because that was his forte (again, I had no clue). So, he took me as a student and I was in his top class with four others whose names I still remember! Tony imparted a ton of musical wisdom and taught us about "feel." He encouraged us to "do our own thing" and arrange each song. He'd give us the basic song (what musicians know as lead sheets) and we had to "flesh them out." To this day, I'm told that my "feel" is better than most. I went on to play "horizontal" keyboards and eventually was in the Air Force rock band...and made musical director after just one year. Thanks Tony.
This guy was in a film with the Hamilton Sisters in 1951 called Chained for Life - and its ON RUclips!!! He was absolutely amazing back then and I was delighted to see he's still in business and still brilliant. Look for "Chained for Life" Part 2/6. It's amazing. He was a handsome guy! Tony, I love everything about you. You're one of those wonderful characters of American life that everybody adores.
