I find it funny that decks like that always choose specifically 15 mana Emrakul as their sideboard for Painter/mill. Kozilek, Butcher of Truth has all the same graveyard text, while actually being somewhat reasonable for RG Initiative to hard cast at 10 mana if they're unlucky and happen to draw it. But in practice everyone just goes straight to the top with the big spaghetti mother.
@@AaronRotenbergI think it’s mostly from show and tell matchups. If you get to cheat a big dumby into play you make them pay the largest price for their misfortune.
@@BoshNRoll i'd like your thoughts on this as well as i think this maybe a good conversation topic, because i would would think if you were to have a titan in your side board for mill protection i would choose Kozilek as it's a bit more reasonable to cast a. But the better question would be is if you are anticipating that much mill wouldn't Gaea's blessing be a better choice, as you can actually cast it and cantrip if you draw it? or is their another reason to have a eldrazi titan in your sideboard if you are not sneak/show in tell.
@@AaronRotenberg Typically one of the reasons for using Emrakul against mill is that it's also the best hedge against Tasha's Hideous Laughter, but obviously that doesn't usually apply for painter specifically.

Shout out to Kaja Foglio for giving us the wonderful iconic art for Pyroblast (and Hydroblast too)! Magic is such an impactful game to be defined for the ages with such tremendous art as this. Foglio was also responsible for the art of Vintage powerhouse Misrha's Workshop, the original art for the progenitor of the term "mill" in Millstone, the second ever art printing for Swords to Plowshares, plus other iconic cards such as Eureka, Energy Flux, and even one of the most convoluted cards in Magic in Shahrazad. On plus they did the art for our boy Hurloon Wranger so you know they're the GOAT... uh, I mean Minotaur.
Painter's Servant also completely blanks: It that Heralds the End, Glaring Fleshraker, Ugin's Binding. It does not blank Kozilek's Return (which does not require a colorless creature spell mv 7 or greater) Another bit of splash damage is it blanks half of Consign to Memory which might be brought in to counter your artifact deck.
Just picked this deck up to play at eternal weekend Prague (hope to see you there!). I always learn a lot from your videos, and seeing you play the deck I want to learn is awesome.
Oh I love painter. Never had it as a deck but it was a tier 1 or 1,5 deck when I got into legacy. Love blue decks but also love decks that punnish blue decks.
Those 4 magus of the moon remind me of the old days when Painter ran imperial recruiter. I'm sure it's not optimal, but I might try running that again in painter for funsies.
You've talked about delver being a good best deck to balance legacy around, and I think painter also belongs on that list. It's strong and has a lot of game plans, but it's not too fast or overbearing and has openings for back and forth interaction
28:09 Too long have the bourgeoisie Painters have been recognized in this deck, and the proletariat Goblin Welders and Engineers have been taken for granted. You love to see them get to work though, lol.
What do you think of stiflenaut with ancient tomb instead of wasteland? So hard to have more than 8 colourless lands. When you need islands to function. Turn 2 naut with daze mana seems pretty strong. Also lightning greaves. Edit: the other lands are mishras factory.
looking at the current meta, would you keep the lightning bolts in the main deck? maybe there is a better usage for the slot... like.... i actually don't know, maybe even experimental synthesizer :)
Yeah I stopped playing Legacy on MtgO due to losing too mich vs Rescaminator, but i played 3 Painter Prelims so far with 75% winrate and overall 5-0 vs Ub Rescaminator or Griefless. I started splashing white for swords and really liked it vs Nethergoyf
Hear me out, match 4 game 1. I know it was going pretty badly, but couldn't you have welded the herse into a soul guide lantern and drawn a card on the slim chance you spiked a reb off the top of the deck?
Im curious as to why you didn't block tamiyo in round 4, game 2. Wouldn't the welder and shamen just killed her for free? Or at least forced them to flip her?
I played what was posted my recently by the Painter master Callum Smith. Though he also cohost a podcast with Juliab Knabb who was known for 61 card elves. Maybe there's a conspiracy here.
Anyone else find Brian way too loud on headphones? Idk if its a peaking issue or dynamic compression, but I find I have to turn the volume way down on BoshNRoll content.
Not really. The fury was hard cast not evoked. Plus he would need 3 mana to painter plus pyroblast. He would only have 2 with land as all his nonbasic lands would be mountains.
@@nooneatall5612fair. But that would require opponent to draw absolutely nothing for two turns. Very unlikely. Edit: by 2 turns I mean Bosh would have to draw land, then opponent would have to draw nothing to interact with painter, pyroblast, or to add to board, and then opponent would have to draw nothing to recover on the next turn. Only then could you maybe start to stabilize.
@@nate1004 Half of the deck is mana, drawing nothing for 2 turns is roughly 1/4. If we naively assume that there is 50/50 chance the card in hand is nothing then it becomes 1/8. Not the best chances but not negligible. Many creatures like magus would not be an immediate threat either, it can touch butts with painter. Edit: You also don't need to pyroblast the magus on the board, just leave it there to turn off your ancient tomb.
@@nooneatall5612true. But even then you’re probably not winning. Everything would have to go perfectly from there and opponent still has a big mana advantage. It’s okay to concede when you are sufficiently far behind that you are probably just delaying the inevitable and you value your time more than the small chances of victory. Edit: also your 1/8 calculation is just the opponent having nothing, Bosh also has to draw 2nd mana to even have a chance which is about 43% (23/54) so that times 1/8 is a little over 5%. And things would still have to go perfectly from there. Edit 2: no point in discussing this further. I believe we have both made good points and I think we can agree that Brian is a better magic player than either of us.
