Frigidaire Affinity Washing Machine Not Draining - Repair

  • The tub filled up, but the water wouldn't go away. Could hear the pump running, but the water wouldn't go away. Wanted to go bike riding but my wife said, I couldn't go away, until I fixed the no-drain dilemma. The few tools and few hours required to disassemble the external panels and clean out the pump boot resulted in a machine that drains like new. This simple fix saved boocoo spondulix.
    Because of its weight and limited work space I could not use the "tipping" method to gain access to the maintenance hole on the machine's under side rather than taking the panels off. Some fix-it vids suggest this is an easier way to access the parts. Doing it that way may be less work for some situations but I'm not going to try it again that way to find out. Catching the water from the pump boot could be a problem too.

    Perfect! Followed your video and fixed it! Suggestions for others' success: I used the bag idea to collect the water, but I set the bag inside a wide, flat tupperware (like for brownies), so that it was easy to pull out - no tearing, flopping or sloshing. I did not even try to mess with those horrid green clamps once I had them off (thanks to everyone who publicly wined about it). I bought hose clamps (the kind that tighten with a screw) to make my life easy from the start. $2 each and WELL worth the time saved (and no foul language necessary)! Thanks for the help. I would never have attempted this without your video.

    I just fixed mine after watching your video. Took me about 2 1/2 hours. Inside the filter had my wife's panty, a bunch of hair ties, and some random coins. The hardest part was connecting the filter tubes back to the base. Those green metal wire clinchers drove me nuts. Thanks for your video!

    THANK YOU!! I bought a used fridgidaire affinity washer and dryer combo. The lady said the washer worked. Well, she lied!! But after watching your video I was able to pull off the rubber boot and clean out the COMPLETELY PLUGGED coin trap and now it’s running great! Jokes on her! She sold me a great combo VERY cheap!! THANKS AGAIN!!!

    Thank you for the video! Saved me a couple hundred dollars by doing it myself. My issue was there was a small sock and my wife had a pair of underwear caught in the coin catcher lol! No idea how that made it there. I do recommend putting hose clamps on instead of those green clamps (I couldn't get those things back on for the life of me).

    We have the Frigidaire Affinity Front loader model. We don’t have a drain problem yet. However, I wanted to do some preventative maintenance and found out that the filter is difficult to get to as your video shows. The LG model has the filter access on the bottom left corner. Net time, it will be LG. Thanks for your video!!!

    Thanks for the video! It helped a lot. I had the exact same problem so I pulled it all apart and found a doggie bag stuffed into the coin trap. The worst part was getting the 3-connector hose back on. That took about 20min of wrangling. The best part is that I made $1.07 in change from the trap!

    This video saved me close to $1,000 over the MLK holiday wknd, thanks so much.
    My culprit was a women's bathing suit pad.
    Only thing I'd add is to have vice grips for the ring clips. It can be tricky with the 3 different connections on the rubber boot which houses the "coin catcher".
    No matter what you do, there's going to be really awful smelling water as part of this repair. Wet dry vac and some towels are an absolute must.

    This goes under 'welcome to my world' clips. I've taken this trip twice and encountered all these issues on each step. The water just never stops and I haven't found a container that will slide under there that would also hold all the water it holds (trust me, the bags can snag). It's truly amazing the stuff that ends up being in there even though you check all the pockets.
    I have an added issue of living in a rural area. I have to pay mileage for a repair person (90 miles round trip) to even determine if the problem is one that can be fixed. If so, usually it means another trip out with the part and repair. It ends up costing a fortune. Sometimes it almost feels easier and less expensive to simply purchase a replacement. My pockets are not limitless. As a result I've actually learned how to open mine up and put it back together for some of the basics. I figure when it's past my abilities then its time for a new one. Videos such as your's have saved me an awful lot over the past five years and so far so good. Now, my dryer....

    I just bought a set of this exact same washer and dryer for $200 on Craigslist, with the washer advertised as needed new bearings. I knew it was the spider arm, and sure enough when I pulled it apart, spider arm. Scored a new drum assembly for $150, and I coated the spider arm in plastidip (doesn't give off any nasty fumes/chemicals). Very nice set, and I had to completely blow apart the washer to do it. Hopefully it'll last me many more years. My old Kenmore brown tops are still going strong, but need work, so I'll fix them up and keep them as a backup. When your spider arm goes out, don't be afraid to replace it. Its not very difficult!

    "You would think they would design this to make it easier to get to..."
    They did. There is an access point under the washer. Tilt the washer back and secure it with a jack stand or brick or something else that is sturdy, then reach into the access hole on the bottom, remove the rubber drain boot by taking off the clamps, pull out the coin trap and clean it out, clean the boot, and then reassemble.
    The most challenging part was getting the drain boot clamps back on, but it wasn't too bad.

    • @cartossin
      @cartossin 6 лет назад

      I just did all that. The thing drains fine now, but still gets stuck at 1 minute and never does the final spin. Ugh.

    • @jonathanpeacock2686
      @jonathanpeacock2686 6 лет назад +1

      Is all of the water draining out? Even a little water in the tub will prevent the final spin from happening. If not all the water is draining, your pump mechanism may also be clogged. Take the hoses off and clean them. The pump is accessible via the same port of the drain boot.
      If all the water is draining out, but the final spin is not engaging, you may need a replacement door lock mechanism.

    It worked, thanks for the video! I actually accessed ours through the rear panel. I think I had a larger access than going through the bottom and less stuff to take off compared to going through the front. Back panels are sharp though and I ended up with a few cuts. I propped up the back of the machine to see better. Not too bad getting everything off, but a bit of a two handed blind contortion act to get things back together. I can't imagine you can get at ìt very well from any of the three ways to get at the trap. Pretty poor setup just to clean out a trap. Took no more than two hours, got it apart, cleaned, back together and successful normal wash in during one evening after work. Thanks again! By the way... coin trap is a misnomer. More like sports bra insert and hair elastic trap. Ok, there were a few coins too!

    • @joshduncan2573

      To anyone reading this, I recently tried from the back - was almost impossible so I gave up and tried from the front - WAY EASIER. You can take the thing apart and have it back together in about 20 minutes. I also ended up with cuts on my fingers and arm from trying to get through the back.. so beware.

    Our machine had the same problem -- plugged pump suction strainer. I looked long and hard how to run diagnostics on the machine before tearing into it. Based on another video for a different Frigidaire model, and combined with trial and error, I finally figured it out. Diagnostics returned an error that the machine was too slow to pump empty (which then stops the cycle). When I removed the top of the machine (2nd step in the repair -- after unplugging), an instruction booklet was found taped inside the machine with instructions on running diagnostics, codes, etc. I scanned it, but unfortunately cannot include it with this post.

    Remind me, next time I buy a damn washer to buy a model with the front access panel at the bottom to these common drain fixes! Many have them. Lol. Makes this a 60 minute job rather than 4 hours, and ya don't have to move it anywhere. Even if it costs $150 more it would be worth every penny.

    This is why it's important to check ALL laundry pockets before washing! Lol. Our lasted 8 years before getting clogged. Since the kids started doing laundry I their own more, now it clogged. Kids are HiGh Maintenance! Lol
    BTW, there's an access panel on the bottom. Pull the washer out and tilt it backwards to the wall. Full access is on the bottom. It's a little more of a pain the ass to do everything, but still faster than pulling off the top, front and sometimes rear panel, and risk breaking something else in the process. No need to pull those off.

      A most excellent decision. Several aspects of this particular machine's construction have once again convinced me that few so-called design engineers ever actually repair anything. "Yestur day ah kuddent spll endgeneer, ann nouw I r won!" has always been a service tech's LOL non-joke. Been fixing stuff well over 65 years...seen it many times.

    • @BrentE
      @BrentE 4 года назад

      @@otd80 Exactly! If it's a design oversight then it's bad engineering. And if it's intentional, that's even worse. Either way I have re-learned a lesson.
      When buying an appliance like this always ask or research 'What's the most common thing to break or need to be maintained on this machine?' Then look to see if they made it easy to do or unnecessarily difficult. Cheers 🍻

    Vacuum out the tub and drain hose with a shop vac. That removes about 3/4 gallon or more of water. Then pull washer out about 2 feet, tilt it back against wall, stuff a large towel in the bottom-back and under the boot area and access coin catch boot by removing only the largest top retention ring. Fixed with clean-up in an hour and much easier. Usually the pump is not the issue.
    Tip: don't fill the washer with small items and large items, and don't stuff the small items to max either. The large items or overfilled washer tub will work small things like panties and small socks thru to the coin catch. That's what was in mine, clogging it...panties and a bikini top pad lol.

    Nice video- I Thought I had a draining problem so I Changed out the drain pump & it drained. I wanted to see if the old drain pump would work so I went to the troulble of removing the new pump ,replacing the old pump & it drained so..it drained fine. Plus I took off the drain to pump hose-nothing clogged there but manipulating it I put a hole in it & put a new one one. I have a different problem-fills but stops & the drum does't agitate or move or spin on the drain spin cycle...was told try changing the door latch-did that still doesn't spin, checked the connections on the motor controller because I was told sometimes they slip off from the vibration but all wires were attached. I didn't change out the motor controller. The belt is fine too. I'm tired of spending time taking off parts..as it's a hassle.any suggestions why it's not spinning or moving?

      Several posts have stated that coming in from the back or the bottom is a better method of doing this fix-it. I could do neither and never considered it because my machine sits on a pedestal in a very cramped laundry room. Working alone, I couldn't tip the machine in any direction or (because of its weight), move it to get to the back. Additionally, I could not chance having the water inside the pump and hoses spill out on the hardwood floor. I've not read anything about catching the spilling water from either of these two methods. Not a problem if the machine is out in a garage. Which way is best? I think only by actually doing all three could a fair assessment be made. That's not in my future. Certainly there is agreement on the very poor engineering design and the significant difficulty in getting that back clamp fastened.

    • @joshduncan2573
      @joshduncan2573 5 лет назад

      DO NOT go from the back. The back is WAY harder and I cut myself on the sharp edges. I tried for 2 hours and there just is not enough room in the back. The front allows you to get two hands in and everything is right in front of you - it's significantly easier even with having to take everything apart.
