Somehow this spontaneous, raw and vulnerable setting makes it better that hearing the recorded versions which are almost sterile from the magic they create here. Excellent job by all!
What?!!? No Autotune!!??!! How are you supposed to perform?? I am a male and I still want Mark Russo's children. Man crush. All kidding aside.... My first exposure to him was in high school while listening to "The Spin" and "Shades". The guy can do more in the altissimo register than most are capable of in the stack. And his musical vocabulary is just astounding. Musically, he just doesn't make bad decisions on his solos. I have two saxophone heroes, Paul Desmond - and understated and deft touch produce some of the sweetest musical sentences and phrases you'll ever hear. The other one is Mark Russo. The man plays with authority, dexterity, in your face, and listening to that man work on a saxophone is its own reward. Sometimes even the music business (a.k.a. "record companies") can not keep a good musician down. (In spite of their best efforts to the contrary.)
World class effort, guys! Literally, an explosion of raw talent on display. I would expect Mr. Hancock would approve of this musical appraisal of one of his seminal works.
The bassist snagged that solo from the acoustic guitar player (debatably) and then no one gave the acoustic 6 string a solo after, ya bastards! Just kidding, amazing jam guys!
I think there's two time in this jam session that when Mr D'Agostino started soloing, the other players steps in the way and also start soloing. And Mr D'Agostino is backing off immediately, letting that other players finish their solos. I search this video from start to finish that maybe I skipped the part when he did his soloing, and no solos from him and the drummer. Maybe they got their solo spot on another tune on this session. But if there's none, than maybe this is not really a good jam session.
Returned to hear Russo’s alto solo. Brilliant...melodic, emotion, surprise, power, fun. Fantastic.
Gonna go out on a limb here and say Zawinul & Cannonball would give this a thumbs up!
Holy cow Russo is something special! Love him in yellow jackets!
Nice to hear Marc Russo playing. Love his Sound and Style 🎷😀
I'm a sax player. Him and Paul Desmond are my Gods.
@@NicholasKrise Bird ?
He's just not grabbed me yet.
("Yet" being the keyword in that sentence.)

That's the SNL sax sound that makes my neck hairs stand at attention. Alas no more, but this guy captured it perfectly circa 1977.
Best version of "Mercy, mercy" ever! Zawinul would highly be pleased! Everyone of this combo does a magnificient job!!
Love Marc's sound. So smooth and legit and has a bite to it when he wants to....thanks for sharing this!!!
