    John, I know doing variants isn't generally within your normal videos and practice, but personally this was extremely, extremely fun to watch and I really hope it wasn't a once off! Would love to see some more of these. And as always, thanks for the great videos, my chess has become more solid through watching you. Also looking forward to the Scandinavian repertoire :)

    I've played about 60 games of this on Lichess and got up to about 1800 then have levelled out at about 1550 ... it's insane. Brutally getting mated by 2 knights and pawn from nowhere after 3 minutes of sustained attack with about 20 pieces haha .. all good fun its quite addictive ;)

    12:02
    "I'm pretty sure he was playing terribly. As far as strategy goes..."
    That's actually not true. If you play Japanese Chess, since pieces can come from anywhere, it's top priority to make a zone defense where drops (and promotions) can't be made.
    If anything, you expecting a normal queenside castle to fend off a quick attack is the strategic mistake here.

    Are you allowed to place a pawn on a promotion square in this variant? For example at 14:16 your opponent had @a1=Q+ and then you had to block with the knight I guess. :D This was a lot of fun to watch, never played bughouse/crazyhouse before so this looks... crazy, - as the name suggests. :D Great vid, John!

    Hey John, can you explain why you like the french defense for crazyhouse? You don't seem to play it in your normal repertoire. I like it even for OTB chess though. It doesn't fit in your style I guess?

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  8 лет назад +1

      +TheBuddhaBilly Hey, TheBuddhaBilly - good question. In bughouse the French Defense is a good way to avoid quick attacks on f7 with Bf1-c4, so I was just trying to apply that philosophy to crazyhouse. In talking to Atrophied a bit, however, it seems the French isn't so great in zhouse.

  • @Gadzinisko
