Holy shit. I don't think there's every been a broadcast show like Night Music. Bob Weir seguing to Bongwater, with an intro from Screamin' Jay Hawkins, covering a Roky Erickson song?!?!?! What the holy sacred fuck. My brain will never recover.
Kramer was everywhere and nowhere. In time he will be remembered as an incredible genius. And when we mention Phil Spector, Brian Wilson and Joe Meek we will also speak of Kramer.
I met him with John S. Hall (King Missile) & Beck at Doornroosje, in Nijmegen, Netherlands April 1995. An unforgettable Night!!! cheers, Dorian Gilbert……..🦇
I saw Bongwater at the Riverside club in Newcastle -upon-Tyne, England, in 1990. Best gig of my life. This video goes some way to illustrating why it was so good. Absolutely nuts!
Paul Tomic I saw so many great gigs at The Riverside but alas I only got into Bongwater after they played there. There’s an empty hole in my life where there should be a wonderful Bongwater gig memory.
I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, that will probably never happen. I'm glad I have most of the shows on hi-fi VHS. Now, to transfer them. That's another matter altogether.
Loved this obscure song growing up - so amazing to see it being performed. Love that they included the haunting background singers that were on the recording. Love the carny vibe. Loved it all basically.
Now, boys and girls, The Residents appeared later on this same show. If one were to have been expanding their consciousness that night and by accident this fly under your radar who knows what might have taken place.
This series remains the greatest music show ever broadcast. Last I heard, Lorne Michaels owns the rights. I get there's not a big market for a DVD release of the series. But damn man! History. Do it for posterity.
I Loved this Late Night Show. I recorded a show with the Leonard Cohen, Spoonman, etc...Sceaming Jay Hawkins singing "OLD MAN RIVER", excellent program. Thank You for Posting.
I fell in love with this years ago when I caught on to Night Music. For years, I was never aware tha this was a R.E. song until 2003 when Stanislav Zabic played it on his radio station K-LSU in Baton Rouge (at the time). Classic!
Jools Holland keyboardist for Squeeze was the original host with sidekick David for "Sunday Night" brought to you by Michelob than it became "Night Music" with David Sanborn continuing as the main host. The Pixies debut was on this show. Many great acts, Pere Ubu, Sun Ra, The Lounge Lizards, to name a few appeared on this iconic short lived music series.
Do not adjust your mind, this is simply reality malfunctioning... This reminds me why they were my favourite band during the late eighties and early nineties.. Nothing comes close today!
I have to admit I never saw a single episode of Sanborn's show. Must have been in one of those long periods - like these last two years - when I don't even have TV.Anyhow, this is one of my favoritest videos on all of RUclips. It's hyperpsychedelic, sensory overload. And I never even saw Bongwater perform once when they were together :-(
May or may not be an exaggeration, but it certainly would have been noticed. Roky Erickson could have used the shot in the arm at the time, too. I told his brother about this when I first saw it and he showed it to Roky who hadn't seen it, but enjoyed it.
…there exists an article, called: ‚Trials & Errors‘ (Magnet Mag) ca. 1990. There they talk about the breakdown of Bongwater, very interesting!! cheers, Dorian Gilbert…….🦇
This is the version I think of whenever I think of this song. Not the original by Roky Erikson, not even the cover from the tribute album "Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye!"
And yet when I watched it live - while in law school at The Bu... it didn't seem that weird at all... considering all the circumstances back then... but yeah... it's pretty f'in weird...

Just beautiful. The Screamin' Jay bit was a downright Lynchian twist for an already-amazing song.

@@stevierob Sorry to hear that you missed them, Stevie. Better late than never, though. Stiill one of my favourite bands!
This was the greatest show on TV while it lasted. Everyone who thinks the 80s sucked weren’t there
WHOA! Screamin' Jay!!! This just got about 1000 times crazier than it already was.
DAMN STRAIGHT!!!!
This show belongs on DVD, Blu-Ray, and/or iTunes! And I'm talking about the entire series, not just this performance.
I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, that will probably never happen. I'm glad I have most of the shows on hi-fi VHS. Now, to transfer them. That's another matter altogether.
So many things to love about this amazing, epic performance.
Loved this obscure song growing up - so amazing to see it being performed. Love that they included the haunting background singers that were on the recording. Love the carny vibe. Loved it all basically.
This was the the greatest collaboration/jam I've EVER seen on Television (ever!)
It's probably the best thing that's ever appeared on television period
The background vocals are what really makes it, transformational
Yes!
Now, boys and girls, The Residents appeared later on this same show. If one were to have been expanding their consciousness that night and by accident this fly under your radar
who knows what might have taken place.
Thank you, I have never seen any footage of them.
That was far and away the most unhinged and fabulous thing I have ever seen.

I love Ann Magnuson!!!
This has restored my faith in humanity!!
if this exact same performance would have appeared on SNL, it would have altered the course of all subsequent pop music.
Night Music was the best music show ever.
I Loved this Late Night Show. I recorded a show with the Leonard Cohen, Spoonman, etc...Sceaming Jay Hawkins singing "OLD MAN RIVER", excellent program. Thank You for Posting.
You'd think Ann Magnuson would've been 'in' with SNL as well; with her comedy acting background. Great band, Bongwater; sorely missed.
ANN and Kramer were the best together ! I'd love a new BONGWATER album ! I WANT ONE !
make a mixed tape baby !
@@sloburnjo If you only knew how many I have ...TAPES too ...How sad is that !

I remember watching this when it aired. Still have it on VHS. Thanks for posting!
David St Hubbins

I can NOT find ANYTHING about the Fabulous Pussywillows... very odd 🤔
ruclips.net/p/PLaKZYh589UyzexeCGUVmkTZ9BnoOIsR7i Look what I found!
Totally, man
Wow, blew me away. What great event!
I remember this particular episode because it was completely wacko and beautiful. Screamin Jay Hawkins on piano was something to behold!
This is an old Roky Ericson tune he did with the 13th Floor Elevators and Bongwater do this on the Ericson tribute album
Thanks, I had completely forgotten the connection.

The Pixies were well established by the time they rocked this show.
This is everything that was right about the 80's.
seonachan
Actually this was early 1990 I think...
I remember watching it live when I lived in The ‘Bu...
That was incredible, wow! I'd almost forgotten about Night Music!
Rock with brains. I'm all for it.
Ann Magnussen & Sceaming Jay. Wow man Bob Weir. Night music was magical. I'm still looking for the Hank Ballard episode. Willie Dixon & SRV too!
Ann Magnuson is in the cast of Man in the High Castle. She plays Caroline Abendsen.
Freeking amazing!!! Thanks!
I just saw her on Star Trek Picard playing an Admiral

I love the spoon guy at the end.
the grateful dead bongwater connection. wow.
May or may not be an exaggeration, but it certainly would have been noticed. Roky Erickson could have used the shot in the arm at the time, too. I told his brother about this when I first saw it and he showed it to Roky who hadn't seen it, but enjoyed it.
JUST. PERFECT.

astounding.
Absolute history. Roky!!
Anybody else notice that’s Hiram Bullock playing slide guitar?
Thank you, thank you for identifying him for me. The solo is so tasteful it's fantastic
Amazing
The Beethoven hairdo is massive
Screamin' Jay and Roky!!!
What happened to reality? I want to go back and live in this Universe again...
I saw this tour in SF, G R E A T Show!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the version I think of whenever I think of this song. Not the original by Roky Erikson, not even the cover from the tribute album "Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye!"
@1111spanky ...and also played with the great Phantom Tollbooth.
How'd she get Ruth Bader Ginsburg to sing backup?
woah...I've never seen this!!
The interviewer's hair looks like he is doing 100 MPH in a convertible.
Oh wow.
Hiram Bullock is playing slide guitar...What the hell? This is bizarro. (And the bearded guy in the dress looks like he's tripping balls)
Screamin Jayyyy
Hey hey hey - what year is this from? She's so cool. I never realized just HOW cool, though.
i hope they used parking tickets for that confetti
what happend to Shimydisk?Kramers label, these guys
This is amazing - despite the ponytail and the host's crazy bride of Frankenstein hair..
is kramer playing without a strap....? this was beautiful!
@willowmistacres It's called "Free-Ballin'!".
A point off for audio sync - what a surprise to find this!
Yes, that was SJH
haha, this is so nuts! lol
Even when this show had musicians I didn't like on it (Bob Weir, Yuck!) it was an adventure. Boy do I miss it.
I want to marry Ann Magnuson.
Ann Magnusson / Shirley McLaine - separated at birth?
"Well we're gonna be playing with Bongwater... and they're gonna be back up by the fabulous Pussy Willows."
".... Ah."
wow. chaos.
WHY DOES DAVE RICK HAVE A DRESS ON??
IDK, but thanks for pointing out who that guy was.
2:00 for the song to start.
I mean, I don't see how there could be any other interpretation. ;)
What year is this from?
Does it for me. Unceasingly.
Is that Arthur Russell on the cello??
M I z A R hahaha \m/
That’s Rob Wasserman on the upright bass. Unless there’s someone else on the cello that I didn’t see.
ann magnuson is a WILD Woman...
Ann Magnuson. It's truly amazing, right?
17 years later ... yes.
Qué buen pedo arman estos weies!! Nomás por eso está chido!
classic! Starts at 1:42, this is da shit!
Guitarist looks like a Flinstone.
Inaudible guitarist I should add.
So that's where twerking started! see abt. 02:30 :-)
The hippie bass player playing the right-handed Hoffner bass doesn’t have a guitar strap on...
I used to have a violin bass made by Eko. If you hold it like that guy is holding his Hoffner, a strap gets in the way.
I think it's just to piss off squares.
The oddest video I've seen
And yet when I watched it live - while in law school at The Bu... it didn't seem that weird at all... considering all the circumstances back then... but yeah... it's pretty f'in weird...
john smith I love the word oddest
Respect
Isnt that Jack Black playing guitar in the B&W skirt?
