As an annual NHL title player I can tell everyone that if you can wait just 30 days after release. Right around mid to late November every single year the game goes on sale for at least 50% off! Its been that way for the last 3+ years and I expect the same this year. I have waited and have been okay with paying $30-$50 rather than $80+
For offline players like myself....this game isn't even worth the black Friday purchase...I'm totally skipping this year & if they go another year next year without making any changes to offline modes mainly be a pro I'll be skipping that one as well...I'm no longer supporting this monopoly....either they make changes or I just won't support the game...I'll prolly go buy nhl 2k11 for PC or something idk but this train of supporting non sense stops here
This is not just a reskin , they totally messed up all the fundamentals , stick handling , passing , hitting are all glitchier and more rough around the edges this year , majority of goals scored are ugly broken plays or weak shots dribbling through the goalie

I'm glad they added checking over the boards but I hate how they make it seem like a new feature. There constantly putting this stuff in the taking it away the next game. I remember when one of the big selling features was the goalies fighting eachother which was cool, then the next game it was gone, same with checking people into the bench, or through the glass, or breaking the glass etc. They just take it out then a few year's later add it back in like it's a new feature. Just leave all that stuff in already! I really wish other developer's still made sport's game's besides EA. Competition is a good thing but when you are the only one making sport's game's you get too comfortable & lazy like EA!
No mention of how goalies and their new animations are over the top and react badly in situations where it isn't needed. Presentation in general feels the same minus a louder crowd, new announcer, and hearing sandstorm 50+ times a game. Depending on the arena, the light show can be absolutely terrible and can't be modified in any way (Good luck in Edmonton). Intros are the same as last year. HUT is essentially the same in every negative way minus moments which still doesn't help it. Gameplay can be "good" but if there is no depth, why bother playing? Another 8 out of 10 score review from yet another location where they really don't deep dive into the game. Gotta make EA happy to get them review copies.

Been playing for about a month with pro career. I've come to realize the basics. If the game wants you to lose you will lose. The frequency of goals scored against your team when you aren't even on the ice is ridiculous. If you cause a penalty the other team almost always scores. Your defense often does not engage and allows them to skate right down the middle to the net. Your goalie won't grab a puck sitting right next to him and sometimes doesn't even attempt to move when the other team is shooting and also flails out of positon for the easiet of shots to defend.
The pressure system has such potential. However the visual effects on the ice take me away from the realism they have been trying to achieve for years. The pressure system can be in effect without the meter being visual on the ice. It could be added to the boards Or in my opinion nowhere at all. You will know you have filled the meter to the max once you see the defending team struggling
have you seen the ESPN hockey broadcasts? they put a floating name above whichever player has the puck in the offensive zone like a video game. its all starting to come full circle
The pressure system needs to be nerfed , if you get a whistle or you clear the zone it should be reset , way too overpowered and does not resemble how pressure works in hockey

The entire idea of zone "pressure" is not real. You can't accumulate "pressure energy" in a game you can only control the puck and tire out the defenders. There is no actual "pressure" force, you either control the puck or you don't.
This is the worst version of this game ever. The full pressure system is absolute dogwater. If you put hitting buttons in the game why would you leave the right stick hit in so when you try a one timer you get penalized for hitting a defender? Also the ridiculous amount of unpenalized hitting on players that aren't anywhere near the puck by the defensive team in the o zone is laughable.

8 out of 10 sounds waaaay to high according to me... If this was their first ever nhl game I could maybe accept that score but since this is basically the same game we've had since the beginning of the current console generation I would deduct at least a whole point or maybe even two!

The pressure system is a cool addition to the game, but they have completely revamped surrounding mechanics in a not great way. Passes in front of the net are near impossible eliminating the one time opportunities when pressure hasn't built up which makes no sense. If anything a two on one break away or any break away for that matter should be a likely scored goal. Not the case this year, granted there will probably be updates tweaking game mechanics and creating new meta for scoring, but the current state of affairs makes the game play feel scripted and stiff. Computer players are complete mavericks on the ice making passes to ghosts, or leaving position completely opening up chances for breakaways. Hitting has potential to be great when they add patches, but as of now its glitchy at best. It seems that there are three or four major builds people are using to abuse these mechanics right now but that's nothing extremely new. It does become a bit annoying when you run into your fifth team of the night running giant grinders just trying to sit behind your net and score a Michigan. They have brought back vision passing allowing you to specifically pass to players via button ala Madden but your better off direction passing with the stick as button passes go crazy 15% percent of the time. All in all its somewhat of an improvement slightly over previous years with things like easier access to customization menus, but give this one a wait till around mid November when the price drops. Some comments have already touched on it but EA typically does a huge sale in November digitally with price drops around 50%, bide your time and enjoy 23 until then.

Sorry but there is no way this deserves an 8. I played the trial and while some things have improved, the gameplay still doesn't feel like hockey. They've done nothing to the offline modes and the pressure meter that disappears after the timer even though you're maintaining the same amount of offensive pressure doesn't make any sense. The celebrations after goals are horrible and the loading screen you get after the puck goes into the net is immersion breaking. The franchise mode is playable but it's still got the same bugs and player/roster/contract issues from last year. Not to mention the goalies are garbage letting in easy shots yet again. It's crazy that NBA 2k games from over a decade ago still manage to beat the modern EA offerings.
I am gonna wait until the NHL does what major-league baseball did, which is fire EA from ever making another video game for their sport. Let Sony take over. Let them do what they did with hockey like they did with baseball.
8/10? lmao come on. Most goals are accidental passes, own goals after the puck bounces in front of the net and your goalie/defenders can't pick it up, cross crease (fine) or far side while bringing it out from the corner. It's rare to see a nice snipe anymore and very fumbly to try and dangle on a breakaway. Passing the puck out with your goalie is worse. Errant passes happen far more often. Poke checking is way too effective. Hitting is way too effective. Hip checks are way too effective. Goaltending is extremely inconsistent from one game to the next. Changing lines on the fly is basically impossible with the new control scheme. This game is the worst NHL EA has put out in probably a decade.
No way Im buying this game. EA should be ashamed of themselves. Their games used to be a mandatory buy, now they’re just sending out the same game and slapping the new year on the cover as well as a roster update. This should be illegal. We have no other option but to play their shitty game or nothing at all. I have to edit my sliders so much just to have a shred of fun. NHL 23 I have 6 feet of clear ice in every direction around me, yet i get poke checked between the legs from behind and not only do I lose the puck, they steal and control the puck. I lowered the poke checking to a ridiculous nearly nothing and I still lose the puck. My pass assist and pass accuracy is almost maxed out. Nearly all my sliders are maxed out or lowered to 0 and it makes very little difference. Im so damn tired of this joke of game, and every other game they make. Not until we all UNITE and refuse to buy this POS product they have to nerve to release will we get an attempt at a better game. It’s not like they don’t see the reviews, they know their games are trash. EA is literally 80% of the games I buy since I was a kid, but im done with them. Absolutely embarrassing and shameful the stuff they put out. Probably laughing at us as they become rich while they copy and paste year after year after year.

Here's why NHL will never work the way it is, at least in franchise mode. There's no flow or feel to the game. There's no me taking out the other team's captain, and I'm getting run at for the rest of the game, or the next game, or more fights because everybody's amped up. In game, when I score a huge goal, everybody just stops skating. The fights haven't changed in years, and I always get an unsportsmanlike when the other guy doesn't fight. Etc....etc. .etc....
Final verdict from me is: wish I'd never wasted my time. Terrible mechanics. Players move like they were made out of Lego bricks. Passes are all over the place. Checking is next-to-impossible but of course the AI targets you like the Terminator. And forget about goaltending: no matter the skill level it's awful. One minor deke and it's in your net. EVERY. TIME. Pass on this worthless trash.

Worst NHL of all time. Doesn’t even deserve a review. Played every year of NHL. Hands down THE worst of all time. Played for 2 weeks and decided to uninstall. Thank god i didn’t pay for it and it was on game-pass for free. This game is so bad that they should pay you to play it. Uninstalled it and redownloaded 23. I will never complain about 23 again. Never downloading another NHL game unless its on game pass but even then will do a thorough search of reviews before i was my time and hard drive space.

The other PlayStation Controller Settings has the(94 Controls Settings) but on The NHL PlayStation 4 2024 The (94 Control Settings) are not there and how the NHL 2024 settings are set I find That NHL 2024 Is unplayable. There was not even a Manual in The Game box in the NHL 2024 box above all. Now May Concern is What Do I Do With This Game and Get My $$ Money back. lol I tried the early access at my friends house for about 10 minutes. Instantly called PlayStation and got a refund on my pre order. Worst NHL game in YEARS. had a hard time taking this review seriously. why on God's green earth are you playing with the "on ice trainer" . made me cringe so hard. no one that plays with that on is remotely good at the game , also, 8/10 LMFAO. yeah a game with animations on par with a 2011 indie game, reused assets from 2015, and some of the most atrocious presentation in modern gaming. the replays , cutscenes and menus are indescribably bad and the entire flow of the game is so choppy and unpolished. still the same horrible crowd as NHL 15 too, and utter cringe commentary . yeah, 8 out of 10 🤣

What is better in 24 than in 23? The clunky control, the new big check that still need some tuning, moving reverse hit and protect puck on L3 and R3 which bring in a lot of miss click and walk over skill stick, the never ending looking for opponent in the more than ever broken matchmaking, the mess of the creation zone that you need to make ALL of your character separatly, the overpowered pressure system that work as an uncovered ice tilt.....oh or maybe the nerfed to the ground dump? what else....humm
It’s only noticeable different with the news songs between whistles. And strobe lights on face offs. The goalies are glitched out. When I shoot and the puck gets blocked the goalie still dives leaving the net wide open. Also the AI defenders are dumb. Was in 3v3 OT and my last defender completely skated away to another player on the boards leaving a clear breakaway. This game is easily a 4/10 but I will still buy it 50% off.

Timing, pull the right stick fast backwards when the ref drop the puck, don't bother with the rest of the buttons. Aim that face off pass with left stick. Or push it forward to try to lock up your opponent and hope to whatever deity you pray to that the AI is to your favor that day.
Play through the EA play Trail first it's ok but it's not worth the full $70....maybe on black Friday but not full price & if your a offline player it's not worth it at all to upgrade honestly especially if you play be a pro

Terrible AI, bouncing off players when I go to hit, and the worst set of challenges for HUT I’ve seen so far are just some of the more infuriating aspects of this game.

NHL 24 just doesn't feel good to play imo. Everything feels kinda sloppy. The pressure system is very easy to exploit as well.

The pressure system is a cool addition to the game, but they have completely revamped surrounding mechanics in a not great way. Passes in front of the net are near impossible eliminating the one time opportunities when pressure hasn't built up which makes no sense. If anything a two on one break away or any break away for that matter should be a likely scored goal. Not the case this year, granted there will probably be updates tweaking game mechanics and creating new meta for scoring, but the current state of affairs makes the game play feel scripted and stiff. Computer players are complete mavericks on the ice making passes to ghosts, or leaving position completely opening up chances for breakaways. Hitting has potential to be great when they add patches, but as of now its glitchy at best. It seems that there are three or four major builds people are using to abuse these mechanics right now but that's nothing extremely new. It does become a bit annoying when you run into your fifth team of the night running giant grinders just trying to sit behind your net and score a Michigan. They have brought back vision passing allowing you to specifically pass to players via button ala Madden but your better off direction passing with the stick as button passes go crazy 15% percent of the time. All in all its somewhat of an improvement slightly over previous years with things like easier access to customization menus, but give this one a wait till around mid November when the price drops. Some comments have already touched on it but EA typically does a huge sale in November digitally with price drops around 50%, bide your time and enjoy 23 until then.

Sorry but there is no way this deserves an 8. I played the trial and while some things have improved, the gameplay still doesn't feel like hockey. They've done nothing to the offline modes and the pressure meter that disappears after the timer even though you're maintaining the same amount of offensive pressure doesn't make any sense. The celebrations after goals are horrible and the loading screen you get after the puck goes into the net is immersion breaking. The franchise mode is playable but it's still got the same bugs and player/roster/contract issues from last year. Not to mention the goalies are garbage letting in easy shots yet again. It's crazy that NBA 2k games from over a decade ago still manage to beat the modern EA offerings.

8/10? lmao come on. Most goals are accidental passes, own goals after the puck bounces in front of the net and your goalie/defenders can't pick it up, cross crease (fine) or far side while bringing it out from the corner. It's rare to see a nice snipe anymore and very fumbly to try and dangle on a breakaway.
Passing the puck out with your goalie is worse.
Errant passes happen far more often.
Poke checking is way too effective.
Hitting is way too effective.
Hip checks are way too effective.
Goaltending is extremely inconsistent from one game to the next.
Changing lines on the fly is basically impossible with the new control scheme.
This game is the worst NHL EA has put out in probably a decade.

No way Im buying this game. EA should be ashamed of themselves. Their games used to be a mandatory buy, now they’re just sending out the same game and slapping the new year on the cover as well as a roster update. This should be illegal. We have no other option but to play their shitty game or nothing at all. I have to edit my sliders so much just to have a shred of fun. NHL 23 I have 6 feet of clear ice in every direction around me, yet i get poke checked between the legs from behind and not only do I lose the puck, they steal and control the puck. I lowered the poke checking to a ridiculous nearly nothing and I still lose the puck. My pass assist and pass accuracy is almost maxed out. Nearly all my sliders are maxed out or lowered to 0 and it makes very little difference. Im so damn tired of this joke of game, and every other game they make.
Not until we all UNITE and refuse to buy this POS product they have to nerve to release will we get an attempt at a better game. It’s not like they don’t see the reviews, they know their games are trash. EA is literally 80% of the games I buy since I was a kid, but im done with them. Absolutely embarrassing and shameful the stuff they put out. Probably laughing at us as they become rich while they copy and paste year after year after year.

Here's why NHL will never work the way it is, at least in franchise mode. There's no flow or feel to the game. There's no me taking out the other team's captain, and I'm getting run at for the rest of the game, or the next game, or more fights because everybody's amped up.
In game, when I score a huge goal, everybody just stops skating. The fights haven't changed in years, and I always get an unsportsmanlike when the other guy doesn't fight. Etc....etc.

Terrible mechanics. Players move like they were made out of Lego bricks. Passes are all over the place. Checking is next-to-impossible but of course the AI targets you like the Terminator. And forget about goaltending: no matter the skill level it's awful. One minor deke and it's in your net. EVERY. TIME. Pass on this worthless trash.

Worst NHL of all time. Doesn’t even deserve a review. Played every year of NHL. Hands down THE worst of all time. Played for 2 weeks and decided to uninstall. Thank god i didn’t pay for it and it was on game-pass for free. This game is so bad that they should pay you to play it. Uninstalled it and redownloaded 23. I will never complain about 23 again. Never downloading another NHL game unless its on game pass but even then will do a thorough search of reviews before i was my time and hard drive space.

The other PlayStation Controller Settings has the(94 Controls Settings) but on The NHL PlayStation 4 2024 The (94 Control Settings) are not there and how the NHL 2024 settings are set I find That NHL 2024 Is unplayable.
There was not even a Manual in The Game box in the NHL 2024 box above all.

& some people will try and say “not everyone has the time to sit around and learn all the controls…” well then don’t play online. Get better at the game offline first. Don’t change the entire controls for people who don’t even “have time” to play the game…

had a hard time taking this review seriously. why on God's green earth are you playing with the "on ice trainer" . made me cringe so hard. no one that plays with that on is remotely good at the game , also, 8/10 LMFAO. yeah a game with animations on par with a 2011 indie game, reused assets from 2015, and some of the most atrocious presentation in modern gaming. the replays , cutscenes and menus are indescribably bad and the entire flow of the game is so choppy and unpolished. still the same horrible crowd as NHL 15 too, and utter cringe commentary . yeah, 8 out of 10 🤣

The clunky control, the new big check that still need some tuning, moving reverse hit and protect puck on L3 and R3 which bring in a lot of miss click and walk over skill stick, the never ending looking for opponent in the more than ever broken matchmaking, the mess of the creation zone that you need to make ALL of your character separatly, the overpowered pressure system that work as an uncovered ice tilt.....oh or maybe the nerfed to the ground dump? what else....humm
It’s only noticeable different with the news songs between whistles. And strobe lights on face offs. The goalies are glitched out. When I shoot and the puck gets blocked the goalie still dives leaving the net wide open. Also the AI defenders are dumb. Was in 3v3 OT and my last defender completely skated away to another player on the boards leaving a clear breakaway. This game is easily a 4/10 but I will still buy it 50% off.

Timing, pull the right stick fast backwards when the ref drop the puck, don't bother with the rest of the buttons. Aim that face off pass with left stick. Or push it forward to try to lock up your opponent and hope to whatever deity you pray to that the AI is to your favor that day.

This game is truly awful. Waited till April to try the free trial and was not amused. By no means is NHL 23 a great game but compared to 24 it feels twice as good. Terrible AI, bouncing off players when I go to hit, and the worst set of challenges for HUT I’ve seen so far are just some of the more infuriating aspects of this game.
