I really don't understand why ppl in Hasan's chat get angry with him when they already know that they'll reject each of his takes on Kamala and her "opportunities"-focused election platform that will ultimately achieve very little for the working class (Kamala never even says "working class", just "middle class"). Hasan's been consistent on these issues for years, and he doesn't ever claim that Trump will achieve any better. So if they're waiting for him to change on these issues, they're really just hate-watching him from beginning to end.

On taxes in the US: Can I just say how mind blown I was (in a bad way) when I heard that some taxes in the US are capped at a certain max amount? Like, not a "you only start paying this once you earn over a certain amount", but "you don't pay any more after you earn a certain amount."
Story time: A couple of my Uni friends travelled to America to work after graduating while I and most of the rest of my friends stayed in Australia to work. For reference, we all work in tech and at big tech companies and earned pretty decent money. After a few years, we were talking about the different earnings between the two groups (in relation to the US-based friends eventually saving up enough to buy a house in Sydney for themselves that they could also support their parents in). Not only were they earning more in raw salary, but their employee share grants were barely taxed at all! For us in Australia, our employee shares were a bit of a logistical frustration, but they're still taxed as income when vesting plus additional capital gains tax on any amount they go up between vesting and selling. For the US folks, they were only taxed on a certain amount of employee shares, and then anything above that was essentially tax free. Am not sure about capital gains on selling, but it was basically free additional income from a tax standpoint. It's more efficient for them to be paid in shares than to be paid in dollars. I can't remember if that was free of all taxes or only a certain tax, but here in Australia with our progressive tax system, if you earn more, you're taxed more, and that's how it should be.
That loophole should not exist. There should be no dollar amount _above_ which your tax bracket goes down. America would be raking in a lot more dollars if they just closed that loophole. These aren't millionaires we're talking about, though this was a well above average salary role. It's these types of silly little loopholes that means even normal, non-purposeful-tax-dodging but well-paid people aren't paying as much tax proportionally as those on lower incomes, which is _not_ how a tax system is supposed to work! Like my friends also found it ridiculous that they would be benefitting from such weird tax laws, even though it was to their advantage. I mean, they were still going to enjoy the benefit because housing in Sydney is some of the worst in the world and they needed to support their parents financially too, but we all felt that that system is _wrong._ Those loopholes need to be closed. We're not talking about obscure mechanisms only used by millionaires who have accountants whose only job is to hide their tax, but normal salaried people who happen to be in a well-paid industry and very good at their jobs are hitting these tax-avoidance limits without purposefully seeking them out.

I think that was actually quite a good interview overall! Kamala's feeling a lot more relaxed, she focused on not only housing but public transit, called out taxing corporations and the wealthy more while _specifically_ calling out not raising taxes for those earning under $400k (and while that number could probably be lower, I think even the average "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" should be comfortable that won't affect them), for the most part she spoke to the issues (although giant L on that question about supporting small towns like Springfield while they're experiencing massive growth, making it about illegal immigration and not about better funding for public services like schools and hospitals).
You're right that she's not going full leftie, but she's definitely doing more than what I expect from most liberals (who TBH I have very low expectations for). I wish she spoke more like this more often, and maybe who knows now she's feeling more used to interviewing, she might just do so instead? But also, the questions were very much set up from that young progressive left perspective, so those were easy throws for her to hit for that demo. I wish I had more faith of her bringing up these things of her own accord in other less safely left spaces!

Historically, public housing is a cesspool of waste, fraud and unbuilt plans. States and municipalities gobble us the funds for police. Every time. This is one aspect of the crisis. She dropped it. (NOT a concern for anyone right now that rental is the only option unless you make 65-75k/yr. Saying we need to lift the red tape is essentially sweeping under the rug as a do smth later issue. While it ravages the populous fully unregulated. Union workers are the only ones being paid fairly on average in construction. Most do not excel to middle class as employees, not self contractors. The disaster we gave witnessed in addressing the lack of affordable housing units has been FAR exceeded by her and dems complete surrender to the biggest lobby in the US, landlords. They run their playbook, their terms, and full deregulation. She's blatantly lying and MOST see through it. Claiming that this economy is good for mobility is pure fallacy. The fake, lying macro-economists the Dem party follows hook line and sinker with direct involvement in writing legislation to bleed us into nonexistence. Just like health insurance they win when we all lose. This is why I'm sharing my hatred for the Dems, their lying risks a very real danger of a fasc takeover in which all progress in society will be reversed to serfdom not joking.
