You know every time a new concept like this comes out people joke and whine about what will happen if it malfunctions. Honestly guys? If we ever want to get this flying car thing going we're going to have to resign ourselves to overcome the fear of leaving the ground, or in this case, falling back to it. Grow a pair. The future demands it.
It would be a much more stable design if the props were above the cabin. This would add stability is the lift and forward movement by the cabin becoming a pendulum. In landing it would give a safer distance for ground obstacles and could also add new landing options, maybe even on water. Nice concept, good luck to Ehang!
I just love this product :) Thanks so much for sharing this video with the world. Because of the death of your friends, is spawned the beginnings of a safe, revolutionary and green mode of transport. Your friends deaths were not in vain. The best of luck to you all in your venture and I wish you all well. Most sincerely JF ( UK )
For the battery life situation, I would suggest a hybrid motor design where gas engine would drive a generator which would charge the on-board battery that would power the motors. I believe with a hybrid design, this vehicle will have increased flight times. Although this concept may result in a lot of extra weight added.
It is exciting to live in our time where we will see this kind of revolution in transport. I believe our cities will change completely because of this technology. We will no longer have to live in shoeboxes. Instead will enjoy living in the outlying communities because commuting by car will be obsolete. One thought. Why not turn the blades upside down and direct the flow up over a round shape which would give you the low pressure needed for lift. Less noise directed to the ground. The round shape could hold helium which would mean less power needed for lift. Just a thought that might be worth thinking about! Keep me posted if you think this might be interesting.
right! they should make Buses, trains and naval / aerial ships for crossing the ocean too, for those who take public transportation or got their drivers license suspended. I can just picture the future.. cant wait
The biggest unforeseen obstacle for the Ehang is its navigation system that currently does not account for the location of Electrical Power lines, communication towers, telephone and other cable lines. Though most modern cities keep much of this underground, its exactly the opposite when traveling outside city limits. Its not much of an issue when the vehicle reaches its service alititude, but instead the issue arrives during takeoff and landings. I still believe the Ehang must have a manual pilot overide. Relying soley on interconnection between the aircraft and a controlling location is like asking for cell phone communication to absolutely never not under any circumstance, drop connections. It just wont happen. Not to mention onboard system OS error, OS crashes, etc. Its unwise to develop completely autonomous flight control.
Hi guys. Very cool project. I have a question: Why is the cockpit placed on top of the prop arms instead of the body being hung from below? Would the center of gravity be easier to control if the cockpit were below, rather than above? Just curious. It looks like an amazing project.
+inyazserg Sergey Larin launch it out the side/towards the top, the propellers look small enough to allow clearance for the rope. Or build in a fail safe for the propellers to slow down in a couple of seconds in preparation for the shoot being launched.
+inyazserg Sergey Larin what do the props have to do with it? the parachuite would come out of the top of the drone and prevent that from falling to the ground. this could be made into a fast deploying chuite with small rockets that extend the canvas in under a second.
MrSkyl1ne Good evening. I understand what you mean. You mean that the whole drone will have a parachute, don't you? But I meant the personal parachute on a driver's back.
Yes, for viability however, you'll need to employ some type of collision avoidance system (be it other aircraft/drones or birds). The system WILL need to be fully autonomous as the average human can't even drive a simple car properly ... there would need to be a fail safe (parachute system and/or even airbag system). Current major people carriers like Airbus, Boeing, etc. are extremely fragile air transport vehicles ... they aren't built to take any sort of impact and the slightest failure in turbine blade can lead to disaster ... your product looks considerably safer than any current major aircraft. But to be blunt, I would not buy a "made in China" version of this transport vehicle ... nothing against the development team specifically but I just will not support a country that has no concern over our global environment. As such, I would suggest you attempt to sell the design/manufacturing to a more Eco friendly country (at least until China stops their uncontrolled pollution of this planet) as I think you'd stand better odds selling this unit and getting wider acceptance ... look for countries that are heavily invested in solar power.
Use it as a fire escaping capsule ; put it on roof of tall building to carry people to roof of building opposite street. Back and forth, back and forth and dozens of life could be saved like that.
Honestly so,etching like this makes more sense than a self driving car. This could simply male a direct pa to where your going and all they would need to do would add so,e kind of object detect to make sure it doesn't run into anything.
the reality is , while electric powered the flight time would be 12 minutes tops. So , unless they make it hybrid in either charging or thrust, its not viable
yeah.. but to control it, you have too be very close to the aircraft for you not to loose signal and get disconnected. just for it only to return home by default..
I remember about 4 years ago I was at a bar talking to this guy and I told him that he will see these some day soon and he laughed in my face and said "I'll call my broker" As he patted my shoulder and left with no intention of taking me seriously. Well, whos laughing now?
I am a professional pilot and this aircraft will work fine in fair weather. but throw some fog and 20knot winds, forget a novice getting into this thing. not to mention rain, freezing rain, snow.
EV and dronecars will be the future. The IC (internal combustion) engine cars will be gone forever. Car manufacturers not realising this transformation will be left behind. EV cars are powerful, with less engine components, clean and very cheap to maintain. Then, why car manufacturers still waste time, resources and money creating concept cars or luxury cars or rather superhypercars on road, like all these cars with IC engines? Moving into the next century, human being will never use the roads anymore as the dronecar, esp produced by Ehang, a famous Chinese drone manufacturer, has replaced the cars as major means of transportation. The dronecars produced by Ehang are fully autonomous, no wheels, no wings, having their own brains to fly and land anywhere on earth as long as there are grounds with the space enough to accommodate the dronecars to land. Autonomous is very effective on flying objects that can manouver the machine freely in any direction. Human transportation on roads will not be viable anymore. So, producing such fancy concept cars with IC engines, though it's awesome today, but comes next century, these cars will be of no interest, as people will go for dronecars to fly them anywhere on earth. People still drive on roads but with EVs only. However, fully electric car manufacturers like Telsla, has the advantage of producing the dronecars as they possess the electrical engineering technology which drive all their cars, that also powers the dronecars. Just don't waste time and money inventing and designing thought to be futuristic concept cars on roads as people will have no interest on driving cars on the road anymore, except the EVs. Everyone will look forward to fly in a dronecar which will become a major transportation, very safe, very fast and very intelligent indeed. Perhaps jet plane will still be reliable for long range cross border transportation. EVs and drone cars are the future, really really awesome.
+gertinoss Could easily be a hybrid system, depending on weight needed to make it successful. Technically, it's a helicopter. Nothing about this is revolutionary. If done right, short commercial hops could be a small new market in aviation at relatively lower altitudes. Build smaller airports close to the city/suburbs. And, they can be used in film as well or other pursuits where an occupant is needed to observe. Or, just fun, bringing commercial aviation to the masses.
Absolute safety? With a fixed pitch propeller it cannot autogirate and glide on general electrical failure. Small propellers do not conserve momentum. No steering or any control whatsoever on general electrical failure. All helicopters are capable of gliding relatively safely on general engine failure.
good for them.. But the flying car thing has not gone to anywhere for long time, people are too closed still, but maybe after 10 to 25 years it would be everyday thing.. Come on, they(most) still dont like electric cars.. what do you expect.. Everything takes time
Safe my ass. Those propellers can slice your legs off. They should give it a fully protected multi-rotor propeller guard system like some of the small drones have.
What a great idea! however, there is no such thing as "absolute safety", especially in aviation.. And you know very well that the government certainly treat this like a helicopter which would eliminate this as a viable option for the average person. Look at the regulation that have been applied to the simple drones we have now.
"Ethang 184 is the safest-" Let me stop you right there. Nothing is safe here when you surround the vehicle with rotors at knee level. Work out a design that doesn't severe limbs when propellers are running.
What happens when one motor goes out? The whole thing goes straight into the ground. Upon impact, the remaining props fly off into the cockpit spearlike to ensure the pilot dies. Is safety built into this design? Unfortunately no. This design is inherently unsafe.
Amazing. These guys are literally building the future. I love Chinese ingenuity
You know every time a new concept like this comes out people joke and whine about what will happen if it malfunctions. Honestly guys? +Cody Rush You are right. People used to say "if man were meant to fly he would have been born with wings!"
Maybe you should grow some balls and get rid of that bowl cut
Spencer Sacco Not a bowl cut. But thanks for having nothing to say, anonymous user icon.
+Cody Rush Bowl cut by affiliation. i did have something important to say.. you just chose not to
Spencer Sacco People who jump right into an insult never have anything to say. But by all means, feel free to alter the curve.

This is outstanding, Go China Go.

Wow! China is killing it!
By "it", you mean their prototypes?

Cool idea, can you imagine people flying these in 10 years around. Star wars and jetsons come to life, wow

you've come up with an awesome design, I think your going places with your airship
This is the future¡¡¡ Bravo China¡¡ Congratulations China¡¡¡
The flying car is here...finally! Well done.
Yes. They've invented the helicopter. It's about time.
The biggest unforeseen obstacle for the Ehang is its navigation system that currently does not account for the location of Electrical Power lines, communication towers, telephone and other cable lines. That's freaking amazing and do inspirational as a designer myself.
This either takes kidnapping to a new level or the next carriage for baby superman.
It would be safe to apply protection to fans as Avatar, but very good, phenomenal idea!
GTA 2030 will have these as a new common vehicle to drive around in
Great achievement!
imagine all the noise 100 of these would make
Hi guys. Very cool project. I have a question: Why is the cockpit placed on top of the prop arms instead of the body being hung from below? Would the center of gravity be easier to control if the cockpit were below, rather than above? Just curious. It looks like an amazing project.
well, In China.. the gravity works a bit different.. its not so responsive with plastic.. yeah its safe..
this is awesome,it must have a manual control and wings in case the need to glide.otherwise best one I've seen yet.
This thing better have one hell of a lot of redundancy, shame they don't talk about it at all.
You got the better ideal.
Why not put the motors and propellers on top,in case of emergency the pilot can jump out with parachute .
+Peter Chang I think it's better to develop a fast deploying low altitude parachute for the whole device.
+MrSkyl1ne and then what? Be minced with the propellers?
+inyazserg Sergey Larin launch it out the side/towards the top, the propellers look small enough to allow clearance for the rope. Or build in a fail safe for the propellers to slow down in a couple of seconds in preparation for the shoot being launched.

I suppose you could incorporate a bottom hatch ejector seat to avoid the rotors...
Oh I'm the first guy who comment this video, Hello world!
Guys please add a parachute in chase of unexpected occurrences
Use it as a fire escaping capsule ; put it on roof of tall building to carry people to roof of building opposite street. Back and forth, back and forth and dozens of life could be saved like that.

badass this is the future. Build it!
OK so the Ehang is circulating for a long time now... Where is the real thing?
My Last vote for best future funding
BRS prarchute systems,in ultralight light planes,or in Cirus SR 22 airplane emergency system.
needs prop guards
payload will be more heavier genius
more heavier...
English...hard!

Thelongmanable okay.. thanks
i agree with your points, but what's up with the hater thing man? can we discuss this in a friendly manner?
What if it rains?
But wait isn't a drone a vehicle without a person in it!
yeah.. but to control it, you have too be very close to the aircraft for you not to loose signal and get disconnected. just for it only to return home by default..

Very impressive should this work it will bypass the race for driverless cars in development by Google and Tesla!
Never give up in life!!!
j'adore its will be my next car :)
EXCELLENT.
I see a need for this in Houston lol I want one!
This is a first, a lot will follow....
Anyway good luck.
heck i want one looks easy to fly .
i love it and i love the video
Amazing

so what happens when someone hacks the GPS systems?
They just need some shrouds.
Sensacional!
Must have a parachute for in flight emergency's.
why is this safer than a helicopter?.
It's not
The future!
love it i want one
What music play in video?
hats up
How much does it cost?
What if one of the blades goes out or malfunctions?
They said in an interview that they have programmed tthe propellors to compensate and quickly land
Whatsapp the price for a perfect Maschine. I like to Beginning with 20 maschines.
Aliens has already taken earth!
I am a professional pilot and this aircraft will work fine in fair weather. but throw some fog and 20knot winds, forget a novice getting into this thing. not to mention rain, freezing rain, snow.
Fuck that I want to control it.
What is its range of climb (the highest altitude which it can reach)?
+inyazserg Sergey Larin i think is 10km
renato muu
Its battery lets it fly for 24 minutes. Won't the drone fall down before it reaches this height?
+inyazserg Sergey Larin lol, best yet so far! I swear! lol
I dreamed it in Indonesia (actually in jakarta) the crowded city

it's a death trap
"Absolute safety by design", and they show early designs crashing 2:16. Doesn't inspire confidence.
Why not? They show safety tests with cars as well in advertising.

But this is really good and original.
i'll pass
Noise pollution this makes too much noise not to mention collision with birds and toy drones
