I think it’s not as straightforward to say. We’ve seen artists that have never managed to much of a buzz after those type of situations (whether allegations, cases or convictions) and ones who have become/remained icons. Wiley had those type of allegations and still had the biggest hit of his career following that with Boasty-his career and legacy hasn’t really been marred by that, if anything it’s been more affected by his Semitic comments. R Kelly’s earliest cases go back to 96 and the court of public opinion didn’t fully turn on him until the late 2010’s. Then you’ve got Tupac who was convicted of SA but is still seen as the best of all time. But you’ve got guys like Bonkaz who virtually got blackballed after the media publicised his situation. Between the time it made headlines and when he stopped making music to focus on Islam, his career never went on the trajectory it was set to go on. And you’ve got guys like Dutch who got taken out of the public consciousness. I think it’s still possible to cut through, but those type of things just make it harder, even more so now with social media and cancel culture.
