      Mega dungeons are way easy for the DM because everything is prescribed, you just behave like a computer. Still, I'm happy they are actually providing high level content.

    Haha. When Mike talked about "taking the lift down" along with "run into Halaster", I imagined a regular elevator and Halaster entering the lift and riding with the party for one or two floors in awkward elevator silence. ^_^

    So 'Waterdeep: Dragon Heist' takes Adventurers from Level 1 to Level 5.
    And now 'Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage' (the follow-on Adventure to Waterdeep: Dragon Heist) takes them from Level 6 to Level 20.
    Wizards of the Coast has essentially created an Entire Campaign from 1 to 20 in 2 Books!!

    • @BTsMusicChannel

      The question is, do we need that? Might there be a better way than prescribed "creativity"?

    • @WittyDroog
      @WittyDroog 5 лет назад +6

      @@BTsMusicChannel You say this like it's a bad thing? They could have just done what they've done in the past and make seasonal campaigns that run in a small chunk of levels.

    • @BTsMusicChannel
      @BTsMusicChannel 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, after playing 5e for 2 1/2 years I think that the trend is that WOTC has diminished reliance on fantasy literate players and their creativity in favor of a more of pre-made options sold in supplement after supplement given to players who seek to level up into superheroes rather than work with limited resources to solve problems while heroically exploring dangerous and mysterious places. I think the 5e Player's Handbook encourages power gaming while removing all the mystery of magic from the "fantasy" setting. It plays more like a video game that encourages power gaming because the players can read about what's next right in the Player's Handbook, and select the ready-made path that suits them best instead of making it up themselves.

    • @WittyDroog
      @WittyDroog 5 лет назад +10

      Okay but that's nothing new, at all. Dungeons and Dragons has ALWAYS provided pre-published adventures and campaigns. Reading about "What's next" in the players handbook has also been there since the very beginning, your classes are clearly defined. There is NOTHING stopping a GM from coming up with their own adventures, and if you've played long enough you'll know there's also no limit to how a group can derail and go in weird directions in pre-made adventures. The books provide a guide but the GM ultimately is what fosters creativity by listening to their players' goals and roleplaying and meeting it. Again though this isn't some new thing, I've been playing for over two decades and I can assure you that this is pretty par for course.
      As for powergaming, with comments like that about 5E then I know you haven't played older editions like 4E, 3.5, or especially Pathfinder which focuses on tactical combat way more. 5E is actually one of the most tame editions I've seen in a long time, encouraging players to play sub-optimal build choices because there are some interesting and strange options. If you play along the AL guidelines like using the standard array and limiting character options to "PHB +1" then as a GM you don't have to worry about too much power gaming beyond the occasional, "creative" interpretation of a spell.
      If what you're seeking is just freeform, anything goes gameplay there are RPGs like those from Monte Cook or some of the Powered by the Apocalypse games that focus more on narrative than strict character builds. If you're just looking for a more old school, 70's feel there's plenty of OSR themed games like Dungeon Crawl Classics, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, BasiX, Adventurer Conquerer King, the list goes on. Of course there's still 2nd Edition D&D. 5E is a game that provides an easy to jump into, easy to run RPG system. It's simple, clean, and easy to grasp for new players. If you want something more there's no shame in picking up a new game system. I have several dozens of unique systems for specific game genres, tones, player interactions, etc.
      In short your complaints about 5E could be applied to older editions and RPGs as a whole far more than just 5E, and chastising Wizards for providing supplements is a failure to understand both the history of the hobby and how you keep an edition fresh and alive. What? Did you think they should have just released the three core books and called it a day? Twiddling their thumbs until 5-10 years when a new edition is needed?

      Hazardous Gaming Seems so. A little odd I think to stay in the city for the first five levels, and then suddenly mega-dungeon for fifteen, I'd imagine they could've produced more content for Waterdeep and urban adventuring. Personally I think I'd prefer each of them to have ten levels, but we'll see when they come out.

    • @TheCraigyT
      @TheCraigyT 6 лет назад +4

      a issue i have with alot of 5e content is the way the split it across books i would rather just a guide to water deep then a campaign book that goes from lvl 1 to 20 !

    • @johncreekpaum4998
      @johncreekpaum4998 6 лет назад +6

      Hazardous Gaming What I'm excited about is that because it's 6-20 you can come to it at any point. Run Waterdeep lvls 1-5, then go to Storm King's Thunder or Curse of Strahd or Tomb of Annihilation, then come back home to Waterdeep and take on the villains you couldn't at lvl 5 and try the dungeon.

    I'd love to see a game built around the Red Wizards or more things from Chult. I don't run modules, but I take inspiration from the newer ones and seeing more stuff from those settings would be great! Also art is nice.

    • @reubenfromow4854
      @reubenfromow4854 6 лет назад

      What you need is Tomb of Annhiliation, which has both red wizards, AND the jungles of chult in it!

    • @Kaipyro67ALT
      @Kaipyro67ALT 6 лет назад

      Reuben Fromow What I mean is more of that stuff in terms of information. There's very little of the Red wizards and aside from Tomb of Annihilation, there's no new books on Chult or Yuan-ti. Info like how Yuan-ti society works or the governments of Chult is hard to find and the stuff that is there is very vague. Not to mention, I'm always down for more Red wizard and Yuan-ti art.

    • @reubenfromow4854
      @reubenfromow4854 6 лет назад +1

      Kaipyro67ALT yeah no that’s fair- the best I can help you with is probably that there’s a tonne of info on the Yuan-Ti in Volo’s guide. In Tales of The Yawning Portal, there’s an adventure called “lost shrine of Tamaochan” that can be set in Chult, and there is a 2e book called adventures in chult (or something like that) with all the information about it. In addition, they created all of the adventurers league content for Tomb of Annhiliation with people like you in mind who want more adventures there!
      As for red wizards, the most I think they’ve done in lore so far has been “dead in Thay” in tales of the yawning portal, which also contains a lot of stat blocks for red wizards, and a chapter from Rise of Tiamat, which explains a few of their tactics. I think that if you look in the right places you should be able to find some extra lore on them as well in past edition books!
      Either way, I hope I helped you with this!

    • @Kaipyro67ALT
      @Kaipyro67ALT 6 лет назад

      I've actually also read Tales from the Yawning Portal as well. That's where I got most of my Red Wizard info. But like, for example, there's no art Szass Tam, the Archmage Lich leader of the Red Wizards, and there's only a handful of art pieces featuring Red Wizards outside of the book, but to me they're one of the coolest organizations. As for Yuan-Ti, I'll give Volo's Guide a second look. Thanks!

  • @sanddry738
    @sanddry738 6 лет назад

    6-20 eh? I don’t know much about undermountain but I can only imagine what things are down there that can mess with such powerful adventurers. Also the idea of players just going down a lift then freezing when Halaster shows up is great. Hopefully the planes and other worlds will also be more of a thing with the portals.

    • @g-rex9089
      @g-rex9089 6 лет назад +1

      I remember him supposedly dieing and sending out a psychic howl that everyone was haunted by in Waterdeep. but if 2,000 years later Volo and Elminster is still alive, Why not Blackcloak?

    • @JazzyBassy
      @JazzyBassy 6 лет назад

      Yeah, honestly it feels like a retcon. Expedition to Undermountain, the adventure where he died, canonically caused Undermountain to be ruined in some parts, and when Halls of Undermountain from 4e returns it still has ruined parts from the ritual that costed him his death, so it is canonical that he is dead. The other option is that Halaster Blackcloak here is just a ghost, which could be the case seeing as how he looks spectral in the cover.

    Traditional dank stone dungeon...Beautiful forest scenes...Aquatic levels...Enchanted castles within the dungeon...
    Getting the impression they're just gonna take the 2E Ruins of Undermountain box sets, Undermountain dungeon crawl modules, 3.5E Expedition to Undermountain, and 4E Halls of Undermountain content to cherry pick and update for 5e like they did with Tales From The Yawning Portal, because that's pretty much what she's describing.
    Either they're gonna cut out a lot of that content, or this is gonna be a gargantuan adventure path. Should be a good time.

    I spent the last 3 years running a D&D 5e version of Ptolus which is a metropolis (urban) with a massive dungeon under it. It went from level 1-21. Now there's official content for pretty much exactly that! What are the chances?!

    As a DM, I am really looking forward to combining this with Dragon Heist, hopefully running a full 1-20 campaign. However, I am a bit concerned that because Dragon Heist and Mad Mage is so different it will attract different players so that people who loved Dragon Heist might not like Mad Mage and vice versa. Anyone else who have thought about this? Maybe talking about it to your players so they know they are getting two different kind of play styles beforehand is a good solution. :)

      I'm just starting to run Dragon Heist and I think at the end I am going to give my players an out. Anyone who wants to retire with their share of the loot and just run an inn can switch in a new character. I'll also flat out ask them if they want a dungeon crawl campaign before I decide if that's the way I want to take them.

    I'm just curious if it includes a map for the yawning portal or if there even is an official map for it in 5e. It seems wierd given the book tales from the yawning portal and then this wouldn't have a map for such a famous location.

    The only problem with this module is it's missing many of the traps and rooms from the original undermountain I've actually compared the maps even in the very beginning once you go past room to the Hall of Mirrors and take a left then on your right there is a Darkness curtain with a bottomless pit gravity trap.
    In the 5th edition undermountain that's not even there and that's just in the very beginning

    Are the maps going to be based on the AD&D 2e version of the Undermountain modules? At least they kept Halaster as builder of the dungeon.

      We need an adventure that starts with, like, Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, or Keep on the Shadowfell, (or with both possible) and then evolves into Red Hand of Doom. The transition should take place at the Spottle Parlor to intro hobgoblins.
      For epic, very D&D, but all the same logically constructed story, Red Hand of Doom is even better than Curse of Strahd or the Night Below.

      That's pretty cool, my lord. It's an odd and quaint adventure, but along with its two sequels you get some good twists and a Hammer Horror/Lovecraft sort of adventure.

    Well I dearly want out of the Realms, WotC has yet to do a megadungeon and the only other famous official one is Castle Greyhawk, so I'm okay with this. After this amd Dragon Heist, is there one more book due this year?

    While I really hoped for a new setting and I think they really teased a new setting HARD with MTOF (such as sigil and spelljammer) I am really happy that they finally created an adventure that goes to 20, at least. I hope this one is released at the same time as the 1-5 one, because i have no interest in the 1-5 !
