Cool to see Kaiji get some love, it's no surprise that it's obscure, but damn, it really hooks you once you start it up. The rock, paper, scissors game in the beginning sounds so mundane, but it's insane how detailed they begin to go into the psychology of it. Also, just gonna throw this out there, the part where he finally owns Ootsuki's ass is like one of the most satisfying things I've seen in an anime.
I introduced it to my best friend and I was disappointed to hear that he didn't like it as much as I did because he "kept predicting everything that happened." It's a shame since it's one of my fav pieces of media but it's okay
Am I the only one who found it fitting that he reviewed a show like this after doing a video on Yakuza 0; a game that takes place during the "bubble era"
*Spoiler* Remember when Kaiji had to choose between betting distance to the destruction of his ear or the destruction of his eye? They should have had a third option, his nose. He would have made billions.
"manga series that's still going" Please Japanese men. Please write finales to your series'. Don't let your characters end up on a boat for years while people die waiting for it. If I die before Berserk is over my spirit will come back to shitpost for all eternity
Simo950 the Hunter X Hunter dude is married to the Sailor Moon lady, so that dude is sitting pretty right now. He couldn't give two shits about giving a proper ending to HxH sadly 😞
I'm really glad you chose this anime. The art-style drew me into the show since I love characters with big noses lol. I first heard about it from a game called Restricted RPS which was inspired by this show's blind rock paper scissors game. If you haven't I'd recommend the live-action movie adaptation that you can watch on RUclips with subtitles for free. They take some liberties with how they rewrote it but it's a pretty good streamlined experience for the entire 1st season.
This anime is just mind boggling. Never watched anything like it. At first I thought it might be some poker blackjack kind of gambling but I was proved wrong in the very first episode. The raw emotions you get from watching this anime is just unmatched. You just cannot stop after first episode. It's more addictive than gambling itself. There are some nail bitting scenes in every episode sorry finger bitting scenes. This anime is just not about gambling but also the mindset of the society we live in. The characters are quite compelling and the voice actors have done a remarkable job in every aspects. Please just watch it and you won't regret .
This is a wonderful anime, one of the best soundtracks in anime as well. Needs more love. Nice use of "Memories" as well, my favorite piece from the OST.
its the same for me when it comes to anime and manga im more likely to read or watch it if the artstyle stands out to me Kaiji is a great anime and its pretty sad how underrated it is
Criminally underappreciated anime, first 9 episodes (ship) epic, then the beams, truly unwatchable at time for the sheer terror, then with Tonegawa and him proving his loyalty ....
Kinda miffed that Strongest Man Kurosawa didn't get mentioned, since it has no mahjong or gambling, and manga quality is as good as kaiji, maybe even better
This is my favorite anime of all time. No other had me experience an wide of emotions as this one. The edge of my seat is blown the FUCK out because of this show.
I only ever heard of Redline from your recommendation, but I decided to give it a try with some friends anyway and we loved every second of it. Now you gave me an incentive to watch Kaiji, which I had long planned to do but never got around to it. Needless to say I absolutely love this one too, luckily the first minute of this video was enough to convince me so I could experience most of it for myself. Thanks a bunch for pointing these two out for me, I'm absolutely thrilled to see what you deem good enough for a review next, cause I'm sure as hell gonna give it a try.
i generally don't like anime cause of all the annoying tropes and lazy design. my friends tried to get me to watch attack of titan and no matter how cool monsters looked or the strange 1800's era world that has jet pack swordsmen, i found myself hating the main characters. i can already say i love this shows art style and subject. it feels like bad high school art revisited after learning to draw and adding some surreal elements to help sell the style. its also nice to have a character who isn't some chosen one with supernatural abilities. at first i saw all the tears and him punching stuff and i though this was gonna be another one of those"i must take revenge because (x) killed my (x) and my sadness gives me power, but i was wrong. this guy got put in a very real and scary predicament cause his friend screw'd him over, and is gets to him, just like a real person in a real shit situation.
I honestly wish more anime was like this. Ultimate Survivor is one of those rare animes that fall in the middle of the spectrum of "universal beefcakes fight villains that are too powerful for them and somehow win anyway" and "schoolgirls". I personally abhor animes that focus only on fighting and coming up with the newest way to make the same character more powerful. Kaiji is what brought me back to anime.
Watched the whole thing because of this video, and now I'm sad that there isn't more. "Rollercoaster of emotion" would be an understatement And godDAMN that soundtrack
Please do. I hardly ever cry and I bawled like a baby at the end of the series. He feel his pain and his joys every step of the way. Also please pay attention to the opening theme. It will sound silly to you at first but pay attention to the words. It will resonate with you once you get to know Kaiji and his friends.
+White Void JoJo One thing, feel free to skip over the opening theme for the first 10-15 episodes (you can watch it but trust me you might find it stupid). It won't mean anything to you (and I skipped over it myself). But after around the 15 episode mark, I watched the theme every time because it had so much meaning in relation to Kaiji and his friends. Either way, forget the theme. This anime is the best anime I've watched since Death Note / FMA (original). Believe me you'll love it.
I saw the show based off your recommendation. It's fantastic. Just got through the first season! Really appreciate the show's unique art style and perspective. No schoolgirl drama or giant monsters or ninjas. It's horrible that they'd take a property that shows the ills of gambling addiction and make a pachinko machine using it, so real life Kaiji's could gambling their money away.
I didn't expect to see this from you. The noses actually did bother me a bit, but it's still an awesome show and one of my favourite anime. I think it's foolish for anyone to not watch a show simply because of the artstyle. Good review. I probably should get around to reading the manga at some point.
Well thanks to this video I just finished watching Kaiji the anime. I would recommend as it goes so far into the inner trauma surrounding him in every episode. A slow burn but I like it. Onto the manga now.
If you haven't watched it yet, the Akagi anime was also very good. It's titular character isn't as relatable as Kaiji, but offers a different, more calculating character.
I'd definitely welcome seeing more reviews like this from you. I'm usually not too keen on anime reviews, but I think that's mostly because the people I've seen doing them aren't exactly the greatest at what they do. This one on the other hand was pretty good and actually made me want to watch the anime at some point. Also, I think your tastes are pretty similar to mine from what I've seen in the time since I started following you, so this is another reason why I'd love to see you do more like this. Whatever you do though, keep it up! You're doing some great work here.
i actually stumbled upon this anime a few months ago and pretty much finished it within a week i enjoyed it even tho the art style takes some getting use to. if you like unique art styles you should check out an anime called ping pong or katanagatari two very different styles of shows that i dont think are as well known as they should be
Kaiji is really good, both seasons. Hope to see more anime reviews in the future. I like the way you do these videos. Do you already have plans for your next favorite? Keep it up man.
Interesting video, I'll have to check this out. And I like what you said about the art style. Even though I wasn't the hugest fan of Kill la Kill at first (I didn't start loving it like I do until about episode 10 because... that was the best use of Rossini ever), I loved the art style. It kind of reminded me of School House Rock with how scrschy the coloring looked, you know, something out of the 80s. Also, this is a weird takeaway but... you can CHEAT at MAHJONG? this is POSSIBLE?
Wonderful review--I think you really captured what Kaiji is about. It's a fantastic underrated anime. It is slow at times, but only to pack in as much intensity as it can. I love to watch the very clever, highly charismatic Kaiji!! 0>0
Nice review!!! The art style was also the thing that attracted me to this series as well. It was nice to see something that wasn't just generic moeblob, or traditional (yet stagnant) anime style. Also, have you by any chance watch the live action movie of Kaiji?
I read the Kaiji manga some time ago and loved it, but I think some chapters just haven't been translated. The first part ends in the middle of the blind rock paper scissors part and the second one starts on some completely different situation and place with characters I don't recognize.
Started reading it a few weeks back and soon wasn't able to put it down, it's easily one of the most addicting manga I've ever read. The author is able to drag scenarios out for chapter after chapter and yet you never find yourself any less engrossed in it. It's a shame the first part of the anime is so difficult to track down given that it's also the only part of the manga that wasn't fully translated but it's not required to jump in to the later arcs so that shouldn't dissuade anyone from trying it.
More people appreciating Fukumoto's series is a blessing, the guy's great with his mangas. And figured you'd knew him from the RGG series, one of the magazines SEGA often collaborates with is the one that features Akagi and Kaiji. Season 3 is never gonna happen for the reason that viewership when it aired was very low despite very high praises and the DVD sales were just ok, no triple restockings in one day to cover the demand or anything which is why Madhouse probably not gonna try again. That and after they split into Madhouse and Mappa studio, they only agreed to do the Hajime no Ippo anime together and Kaiji 2nd was their last work together. it's also why Parasyte looks so horrible when their previous 90s work was Kaiji.
To this day, I have never watched a show that got me as tense as the episodes where they have to walk along a electrified beam.
the first guy falling onto the floor and breaking his legs in the race was SUPER surprising to me
shocking, you could say
Yeah, that scene really made me feel the tension, desperation and vertigo. It's so well made.
Also the scene where they are cheering for each other my God I got goosebumps
The soundtrack for this series was too damn good.
I really wish we could get a third season. Kaiji is the only anime that's given me so many feels
Try elphen lied
it has more feels
And the manga is still going!
Also try Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa, another manga by Fukumoto. If you ever been depressed you will instantly sympathise with the main character.
then you must not like anime that much then.
now you have Tonegawa spin-off
I would watch Kaiji over any of the thousand SAOs or generic moeshit that we get every year.
+RexVergstrong You'd watch moe over moe? idgi
Kaiji is the moest of them all tho.
+RexVergstrong kaiji imo is the most underrated anime in the history
+TheMarshall92
Not at all. It's actually really famous, you just don't watch enough anime.
RexVergstrong I'm sure you feel very special.

It was the opposite for me: I had to binge-watch the final Pachinko arc beacause the suspense was killing me.

I cried almost as much as Kaiji watching this.

Kaiji was the only show able to really push my emotions that hard, to make my heart rate go up and sometimes make my guts freeze
I am currently in love with this series.

So on point about shows having their own styles. There's anime then there's "anime" which you pointed out so much same face in shows lately.
