“I think music is like a circle. So when you’re a child, you have a kind of simplicity, primitive. And then in the middle age, everything makes it complicated (…) and then when you get older, you come back to the simplicity, but it’s already wise. Very wise simplicity.” Dang Thai Son
    I love this quote!

He is phenomenal. A movie about his life should be done. He was born and grew up in a war torn country. He had overcome unimaginable hardship to get to where he is now. He is a huge inspiration for lots of Vietnamese like me.

not to take anything away from him, but it was also the height of the cold war, many western pianists were not able to take part for one reason or another

Listening to his mother playing nocturnes and mazukas on a moonlit piano in a forest, what a way to be introduced into Chopin.

It proves that learning music is spontaneous and self-disciplined. You either have the musical sense or you don't. Not because you attended some highly commercialized Lang Lang master class, then you think you automatically gain something.

at 07:00 thai son lovingly mentions how his mother in the mountains where they lived with no electricity, was playing melodies of a nocturne and a mazurca, when he was 8 years old, at night, in the silence of the night...
and at 07:38 it is so nice how he talks about the nobility and the wise simplicity of his major musical influence after his mother, that of arthur rubinstein...

Thank You the famous pianist Đặng Thái Sơn for this lengthy interview. You are very honest in talking about the period after winning the Chopin First Award, of going back to school to learn more. I will follow you and your role pianist, Mr. Arthur Rubinstein, to search for and to enjoy the simplicity style of play which you are mentioned.Best Regards,

I'm really happy that he won and not Ivo. This is very rare that a participant of this competition has, by entering it already, as deep and rocky live experience as him. No wonder he was more mature and close to the chopin torn soul than most other contestants.

I just knew him becoz I searched most famous pianist in Vietnam to listen to some songs while studying.
I expected him to be strict and things coz he is from Hanoi (sorry I have this thinking Hanoian always strict and disciplineed)
But damn he is soft and joyful.
I dont know if he came out but he definitely gay
    (again, I respected LGBT people)
Just wanna say thank you. You made Vietnam proud.

Chopin=Beethoven, both considered Bach as a master, they merge in the sonatas, the fourth movement of Chopin's first sonata is pure Beethoven, and the second movement of the pathetic sonata (which is not pathetic)it reminds a lot of Chopin songs, so I think they have some connection.

His winning the competition and many prizes didn't have anything to do with Pogorelich being eliminated, even if the judge let Ivo advance into the final round, who's to say that Ivo could have won the competition? They could have both been co-winners, or ivo as second prize, third prize, or even fourth prize, use your brain. You speak as if DTS awarded himself the prize, he didn't, 20 of the best musicians in the world did, and you are definitely not one of them.

    • @kiranbernard7214
