"Born Free" A Red-Tailed Hawk Chick

- This is a video chronicle of a Red-Tailed Hawk chick from one to six weeks, after hatching in its nest high in a Saguaro cactus. It has all been condensed into an sub eleven minute video with other wildlife scenes mixed in. I do very little talking during this video and try to let the pictures speak for themselves.

I just want to thank you for taking the time and going through all the effort and hard work to bring this to us. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen the whole time. VERY impressive video!!! The mother is gorgeous, and it was amazing to see the chick turn from a little downy dumpling into a bird of prey so quickly.. Thanks again, most of us would never get the chance to see this in our lifetimes.

Really glad you enjoyed it! I'm an aviation fan and grew up with my dad flying 172 -182s. These days I take the occasional R22 instruction flight when I can afford it. These birds certainly are the true masters of flights though with individual feather control. You've probably seen the Peregrine Falcon 'Frightful' break 242mph! Thanks for watching!

I have been watching a hawk pair outside my suburban apt. I've never been a burd watcher, but this has been so fascinating. They are so big and majestic. Thanks for your video. I hope i get to see some fleglings fly.
We are watching a nest high up in an oak tree on our small farm in Williston, FL. We are having to watch from the ground. The chicks hatched 1 or 2 weeks ago, and are being fed by their mom and dad now. Can't wait until they get big enough to see (the babies). Thanks for the video - it helps us understand the timing and what to expect on a weekly basis. This is a fascinating experience.
They will nest there every year forever, and when they are dead and gone, it will be taken over by another pair.....cool....I used to live in Gainesville, Florida.. actually out in Windsor, Newnans Lake, and saw nesting bald eagles and ospreys there each year...

The Presidio in San Francisco had a cam on the Red Tailed Hawk nest there last year, it was fun to watch the two baby hawks grow up. This year a pair of Great Horned Owls stole the nest from the hawks.

That was a great video, can't wait till you have more. I had a mother hawk bring her two babies in the back yard...plenty of trees too, but they were alway on the ground. Mom sat on a railing of neighbor's deck and kept an eye on the baby hawks, although they could fly. It was amazing just to sit and watch for days, then they were gone. Mom is still around. Thank you for your video, loved it.

I'm in Indianapolis, IN and it just so happens that we have two redtail hawks living in one of our trees in the backyard. We noticed them when one of them dove for our little dog as a possible snack...heh. Now we watch these birds in awe. My friend managed to capture several amazing photos of our feathered friends. To be very honest, I've never stopped to really notice these amazing birds for any length of time. Now, I feel mesmerized by the hawks; especially when snapping a close up photo, the

We have a hawk nest right outside our house. We can't get to the nest, but from time to time you can see the babies stretching, flapping their wings, wiggling their little heads. Looks so comical, reminds me of something off the muppets. They are so cute.

Awww...thank you so much for sharing. I'm a TOTAL bald eagle lover and just starting to get into red tailed hawks now. I live in Southern CA in somewhat of a rural area and they are all over the place!! I've been following A LOT of bald eagle nests and wanted to branch out (no pun) and check out videos of red tailed hawks. You did an amazing job on this video. Thank you once again!!!!
Same here. I recently found a red tail nest with 3 chicks and adoring parents. This video was helpful in the aging process of the chicks, as well as, downright entertaining!!

I love at week 4 when he got his colorful feathers in and then again late week 5 when he stood up tall and strong like he was ready to face the world. It's incredible that you got all of that on video! I've been chasing hawks for so many years and have only gotten that close on a mom a few times and have never seen a baby before. So I'm glad I could see one grow up. Great job! :)

Unbelievably beautiful, she was here for 2 days an now has not been here for 2 days. Sniff sniff, certainly she is not done with me yet!! :-) All the research I did said a Red Tail Hawk is a Messenger and Visionary....Awesome! Now I need help to interpret
Perhaps no interpretation needed, just a wonderfully designed creature by an ever more wonderful God. Maybe you were blessed with this hawk so that you would seek the truth and love of Jesus Christ. :) I sure hope you get to see it again!

We had a red-tailed hawk nest high in a Douglas fir near our house for five years. We could never see the nest at all, only the parents flying to and from, but the babies were extremely noisy both in and out of the nest. Shriek-shriek-shriek (on an upward note) started in early February and continued through summer when the fledglings were flying and demanding food from their parents. I am surprised both that these youngsters are so quiet and the fact that when they do vocalize, they sound like adults and not like the juvies I used to hear.

Great video Patroit.. As an aviator nothing in nature seems to fascinate me more than falcons. They are the best flying machines out there with their spectacular flight dynamics and intense use of the thermals created by the warm wind drafts. The wings are quite exquisite as they propel the bird to breakneck speeds whilst maintaining pinpoint flight in combination of needle sharp turns..
@cal10mag Thank you for the kind words! I actually ended up with a lot more video that just the 11 minutes here but decided to squeeze all 6 weeks into a single video. This way the viewer can witness the beginning from the end without watch six, 10 minute vids.

We have on NEST in our tree.One year one of my cat's brought one to me,or to my cat pen,it was inside so one of my young ones got it.It wasn't hurt at all,mostly because I feed the crap out of my kitties outside,and they wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.So I put it over the fence into my neighbors yard,and after about 15 minutes,it flew away.They are back now-I think nesting again.I been hearing them scream at me when I am by the tree.That baby I saw was the size of a chicken,huge!
the way these guys stared at you and your camera almost feel like they knew that you are a good guy.

the only bird watching i do is staring at the seagulls that come to my windowsill for bread. Got two babies and a gull who taps on my window for its daily feed. Need to get out there and see more wildlife, live in Scotland in a small city so its not really ideal lol.

Thanks! When I consider the complexity of a single cell, so complex that even science has only begun to scratch the surface, the transformation of from egg to fully functioning predator is nothing short of a miracle to my way of thinking. : )

All you really need is a good set of binoculars and a chart or book of common birds in your area. I guess some good rain gear wouldn't hurt over there either. :) I know there are several birding clubs in Scotland as well.

RTHA catch stuff to eat -- kill or be killed. From the birds perspective the only reason the giant (person) would be interested in it would be to eat it.
