- Millom Town Council chair Ged McGrath says the Government have not consulted the small Cumbrian town about their plans to house 40 asylum seekers.
“It needs to be appropriate for the community that they’re sending them to.”
A Home Office spokesperson responded to the row:
"We have always been upfront about the unprecedented pressure being put on our asylum system, brought about by a significant increase in dangerous and illegal journeys into the country over recent years.
The Home Office has a statutory duty to provide safe and secure housing for asylum seekers and we are continuing to work closely with local authorities, including in Millom, to manage any impact in the area and address local concerns."

Build detention centres and put them in there before they are deported! These homes should be for BRITISH homeless NOT foreigners when our people are suffering ..pity the home office don’t have a responsibility to house BRITS first and foremost!! Detention centres in places that are isolated from the population. Outer Hebrides would be ideal with minimal shelter and food.

The Home Office definitely does not have a statutory duty to provide housing and security for non-citizens -illegal migrants. It has a statutory and legal duty to provide security and safety for the law-abiding, taxpaying citizens of the UK. How can the people of Britain accept the Home Office's absolute treasonous dereliction of duty? Its madness that Brits tolerate this.
The government saw how ridiculously compliant the public were during covid. The political class know Brits will now swallow just about anything without much more than a grumble.

Great point - the reason Millom was chosen was because they had no “hate crime” recorded. So being a peaceful community did them no favours whatsoever - what a sad state of affairs 😢

The reason why no hate crime has been reported is because the town is mainly white British the only diversity is the takeaways who get abuse all the time but nobody grasses there due to fear of what will happen.

because our current hiring requirements mean many foreign born people are currently working in the home office.

They thought Millom would be a soft touch and they’d get this past the post before sleepy Millom realised what was happening- well they can think again 💪 When some of the “sellers” realised what was going on, they stood with their community and pulled out of the sale. This was a very selfless act, as the Government (via Serco) make it a very financially attractive proposition.

I don't wish to insult the people of this town, but I do wonder who they vote for and how they will vote at the next election. Like so many out there, there is this disconnect about mass immigration be it legal or illegal, until that is their town/street/village etc. is affected. If the government had any sense, and talent, as politicians, they would have predicted that the illegals and legal immigrants were going to keep coming.
They could have projected the requirement and spending for accomodation for several years to come. And, they could have allocated that money to build a military base style accomodation processing centre, which would have paid off long term in accommodation savings. It would prevented the home office losing track of illegals. And if an airbase, the deportation flights could leave directly from the detention centre.
But as with everything else, todays politicians, and civil servants, have restricted IQs that prevent them having any analytical thinking skills.
None of them have any vision or forward thinking. Parliament is consistently reactive, not proactive because they are trying to keep their jobs (which is why things worked better when they weren't all career politicians).
It might have been a good idea if they were to put one of these houses in a place like that. Separate them from their 'community' and teach them how to be British, but no, they have to swamp the place (is that to teach the rural community how things are going to be in future? 🤔).

Because they were promised a free, brand new fully furnished house each if they agreed to jump on the home office dinghy scheme. An interpreter told me that every single illegal tells him exactly the same, if they agreed to jump on the dinghy. That was 6 years ago. Now you know who the traffickers are and always have been. This all happens due to obligations of the UN asylum convention.

Its obvious why this town was selected. Our institutions and government have degenerated to a borderline criminal condition. We are being extorted from by ruthless gangs who have made their baseness normal and universal. One day there will be reckoning, and it will be ugly. Whether or not common, sense, justice and prosperity can be restored beyond that is anyone's guess, but something truly ominous is looming.
There will be consultation, the home office will ignore it and do it anyway.

Millom is isolated and insular. West Cumbrians are VERY frosty to anyone who’s not West Cumbrian (personal experience). Could be a good idea. The migrants will be begging to be deported before too long.

Although I stand with millom I'm willing to bet that the people of millom were at the very least indifferent to the destruction of inner city communities by this same process , did they care twenty or thirty years ago when huge areas of cities began to resemble Karachi and anyone who had a problem with it was labeled a racist bigot . Carol, I live in MIllom and have done since I was a very small boy. I worked for the MoD in the 70s through to the noughties. I worked on radar mainly. Every 6 months we had a visit from Marconi engineers to service the radar, they were from Leicester. I got on well with them and had many 'in depth' conversations with them about the state of the nation (circa 1984, the real year, not the Owellean year, lol) They told me about the state of their city THEN! So God knows what it is like now? They said the town centre after dark was a 'no go' area. The worst sorts were the West Indians who were extremely arrogant and violent to the indigenous white population. The Indians were better and more inclined to want to make money. The favourite trick to 'acquire housing' was to pay over the odds for a house or two on a nice estate. This resulted in the locals putting their houses on the market and selling them off cheaply, then these immigrants buy up the lot, hence a ghetto evolved! These people are the 'invaders' and their prime desire is to make our country their country! And thus far they have been very successful! I have thought with sorrow, how this once beautiful Island is being systematically destroyed by mass migration, you definitely ALWAYS had my sympathy. TC

To walk around the streets that I grew up in today is heartbreaking , unrecognisable to how it used to be and dangerous to hang around too long in . Very sad .

I've seen a huge spike of immigrants in my home town too, yet we were never asked or consulted. All these councils are doing it. This government must really hate us is all I can say, but if they hate the indigenous people of this country then they're not fit to govern and should resign.

My whole town is totally changed. One of the largest towns in the UK this time last year was 95% British at least. Now its around 50/50. They are sneaking them in under our noses.

I get the need to house folk, to inject new life into communities but the sneaky way the authorities/government are going about housing asylum seekers is just likely to cause trouble instead of a transition under negotiation that’s appropriate for the community.
This doesn't 'inject new life into communities'. Families might do that. You'll never see them at the whist drives or coffee mornings, they won't be at church on Sunday and they'll not need the parent/toddler group or the after-school clubs. I doubt they'll become regulars at the local pub or join the amateur dramatics society either. They'll cause trouble, hanging about on the streets (as many groups of young men with nothing to do seem to end up doing). I guarantee the crime rate will soar (from pretty near zero). And then, as soon as they get their asylum (which seems to be a rubber stamp process) they'll go elsewhere and the town will have a new lot.
Seeing in Turkish group girl comes Bournemouth for language course finds everybody Afgan and Arab struggling to learn now asking how she can get a refund and go back 😅😅😅 No wonder even Nigerians stopped coming 😅😅

We have 90 units being built some 4 bedrooms we also have ex military houses where they are being puy and now they are putting them on the military base. We are a rural community of 15k and police are 40mins away
