Alex, great idea for a video. Just low-stakes rating, felt like chatting on the couch with a friend, the numbers don't really matter. This was really fun for me. I watched the video playing it like a "Guess the Score!" game, because your tastes and mine overlap a lot, and as a longtime subscriber I've figured out where we differ.
Believe it or not, I correctly guessed your score OVER 50% of the time, and for all but around 10-12 games, I was either correct or only one point off. For the games I was two off (and in one case it was even more, I forget which game!), it was always one of those games where you hesitated and gave 10 seconds of context to explain your score. Very interesting.
Couple of other comments:
- I don't feel like you "gave out 10's like candy"... For me 10 doesn't mean "perfect", it means "must-play, classic-tier, among the best (or reviewer's favorite) in the genre". On your channel, you mostly choose to review games that interest you, so of course the games will skew good. That's also why you should feel fine that so many games ended up 8's and 9's here. Think how many scores lower than 5 or 6 you would give if you reviewed a bunch of bad games, or games that don't interest you.
- btw, in answer to your rhetorical challenge, I did in fact "play Loop8 truly" 😅, and it's a 7 for me. I enjoyed several of the aspects that frustrated you. I may have even gotten tetchy in the comments section of your review for that game ... Sorry about that! Sometimes I get defensive about games I like, even when they're a 7 LOL...

Thank you so much! I still worry about views of course. But I usually make up for lower views for some videos by making others that people will be interested in! As you know, it’s very important to me to be able to experiment and make new kinds of videos that people won’t expect, like this one!
And good on you for enjoying Loop8! I’m always grateful whenever I get to read people’s takes on games I’ve played! I learn a lot as a gamer and as a person by taking in all of these second hand experiences!

I really liked this video, but I wanna mention that one of the things I enjoy about your reviews is that you DON'T give the games a number rating. With how complex a lot of games are, I just think it's unfair and borderline impossible to give a game a number score (especially when we live in a world where a 5/10 is considered bad when it SHOULD be an average score.
That being said, really happy to see that you gave Atelier Sophie 2 a 10/10. One of my favorite games of all time and I'm glad to see it get the praise it deserves :D
Even you said so but the Cold Steel 4 score you gave I could just feel the vitriol haha! Im not there yet with Cold Steel but soon. This was fun to watch and is a great indication of everything youve accomplished on this channel and with gaming in general. I was very happy to hear your scores for Soul Hackers 2 and CryMachina. I still need to buy and play some of these one day I’ll beat my backlog 😅 I recently beat god of war ragnarok and man what a good game the 120 fps mode was awesome when you master the combat and get into it it feels really good dodging and blocking
this was some really good work by you both! i liked your scores because some of them are the same as mine tbh. even the ones i disagree with i can see why. we all have different tastes and thats ok.

I'm glad you put Sophie 2 above all other, to me sophie 2 is the best perfected Atelier game.
No amount of Ryza will change my mind.
Same with monster hunter stories 1/2 (i played the first full on my phone! I never play full games on my phoned except auto battle gachas so it says a lot).
The 2nd one is even better, i plan to patinium on ps5 when they comes out soon! I'm mega hyped.
Ayesha is my favorite Atelier game I’ve played so far and one of my top 5 games in general, so we disagree on that one. What makes a 7 for me is usually the feeling “I enjoyed it, but it didn’t/probably won’t stick with me.”

sir! i subscribed as soon as you gave chained echoes a 10! and sea of stars at 7 sounds right to me, there was lots to like but it wasn't for me as i went into it STRAIGHT from echoes

The sprite could redone it if they have more money

I actually appreciate that you never gave the games scores in your reviews. Just what you liked or didn't like.
The idea of scoring or rating games is just so arbitrary to me. It also suggests that there is some metric to which everyone agrees on. Which obviously isn't the case.
Nevertheless, this was a fun video. I tried to anticipate your scores and had about a 70% success rate.
I can agree to a lot of ratings.
But Sea of Stars is a clear 10, at the samel level with Chained Echoes
Xenoblade 3 with DLC is a clear 10 (as you have already suggested
Star Ocean Second Story R is more like a 9 than a 10 for me.
I'll speak of games I played. Trails of Cold Steel 3 was more enjoyable to me than 4, and Zero compared to Azure so we agree on that. Team Asano, Triangle Strategy is a 10, Can't speak on Octopath cause I've only played the demos for 1&2. My only gripe was how you rated Ys 9 but I get that most people view the game as a step down but I don't see it. And while I do have Yakuza 0-6 in my steam library, I've only played 0 and still trying to beat that. Chained Echoes, Unicorn Overlord, 13 Sentinels are masterpieces thought I'll give you that.

@@BacklogBattle I take lots of recommendations from people and RUclips channels I trust but I rarely manage to enjoy them as much. Dark Souls, BloodBorne, Skyrim, Alien Isolation, PubG and Elden Ring have all been at the top of my pile. I really enjoyed Catherine as well. I've tried tonnes of jrpgs and I'm at the start of final fantasy IX at the moment, I've started Octopath Traveller 2 and Star Ocean Second Story R and lots of others but they haven't bitten me and compelled me to play on. I started 13 Sentinels too and that was quirky but the game play battle part just seemed to simple. Anyway I really enjoyed listening to people talk about games as I go about my daily life, I'm also older in my late 40s so I appreciate your channel

On a scale of 7 to 10 lol.
I had some 2s and 3s!
I don't really think there were too many 10s, but it was a very high average clustered around 7-8-9.
But that actually makes sense if you think about it - I'm guessing you don't review games if you don't beat them, and if you don't like them you probably don't finish them. Or if you do, you probably don't care enough to make a review.
Haven't played half of these or more. It's clear you enjoy gaming, and that's great.
And to be honest, there's nothing I well and truly disagree with. Everything I played that you enjoyed, I also enjoyed. Maybe to different degrees, but still.
Probably would've hated FF7 Rebirth though. Won't ever play it myself. Remake is the worst game I can remember ever beating, 1/10 for the graphics, everything else was awful. Given that, I see no reason to try the sequel.
It's a lot simpler than that - I don't review games I don't want to talk about!

Love this idea and it’s cool to see scores after being separated from a game for a while. I don’t really like the way our scoring system works as a whole though. Industry average seems like a 7 which leaves only 3 numbers to indicate how good a game is. I would love to see average be a 4 and that leaves more room to describe a game. That would also help break up the congestion of a lot of the 8s and 9s

Syntactical ambiguity! I have books and audiobooks here, and it’d be wordy if I said “I score all 145 of my game/book/audiobook reviews!”
Littlewood a 7?? Unsub. Kidding! I understand moving away from a number review when opinions can change over time. It would have been cool to see what your score was at the time of the initial review in addition to what your current rating is.
