Thank you for this video Dr. I see this attitude in the hospital every time my husband has been there for alcohol withdrawal. I have learned more from you , and felt more support, then from any other healthcare worker we have encountered. Unfortunately, family and friends too.

Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad something I posted helped provide some education and support. On the other hand, I'm very sorry to hear that you and your family have not had the best experiences with other healthcare providers. Good ones are out there. Not easy to find sometimes, but they are out there. hopefully those unfortunate experiences don't serve as a huge obstacle to not seek help when needed. Wishing you and your family well.

Hi Andrew, I celebrated 8 years on Feb. 8th. You have hit the nail on the head. I had to get honest, open minded and willing. I am a member of NA, AA and CA. It works if you work it, so work it because you’re worth it. Take care, Harry ♥️

Thank you so much Doc for busting the myths. I was waiting to hit Rock Bottom to bounce back ,but your motivational insight just ignited my desire to fight back instead of waiting for something to happen.

Rehab was , unfortunately, a huge waste of time. It was obvious to me that unless you are forced to be there like under a judges order and therefore feel like you are in a sort of secondary prison it will not help. I say this because rehab is just a forced removal from the daily routine of drug addiction. There was no sense of happiness or achievement. Just forced meetings after meetings after meetings. Constant and repetitive meetings, that for me, were a near total waste of time. Listening to speakers over and over and over and over again was nothing more than an exercise in futility. I do not need to hear the same stories in a hospital setting that I hear in the streets. I work my ass off every single day. I've learned to treat my addiction as a sudo prescription that I cannot live without. There is no HIGH. There is no fun and barely any relief from usage. Just expense and the positive reinforcement of knowing that I will not get sick. I live in shame and cannot use the licenses and education I've received because of drug tests. I'm too responsible and care for my loved ones too much to commit suicide. Therefore I am living in hell. With absolutely no one to talk to as it will only get me another person who thinks that I am a worthless lost cause.

I hear you brother, I have also reached a stage where I don't see the end of the tunnel...just stumbling on trying not to be sick, in other words, existing as the normal guy that others know me to be. It's not about getting high it's about getting from one day to the other.

It does *start* as a choice. A socially innocuous - socially approved! - happy social fun-time choice.
Let's all have fun together, friends!
And for far too many people, it slides into addiction.
