His paintings are superb and occasionally a concise nugget of history that we have mostly forgotten; that 150 -200 years ago people were sold at auction to the highest bidder

In the Islamic world slaves are still bought and sold. In Sudan you can buy a child.

These are images depicting a world only 150 years old, though it seems like an eternity. BTW, it was Gerome's painting of " Pollice Verso" that cemented the erroneous idea of "thumbs down" as the sign of execution in the Colosseum.

Jean-Léon Gérôme, born in Vesoul in Haute-Saône on May 11, 1824 and died in Paris on January 10, 1904, was a French painter and sculptor, member of the Academy of Fine Arts. He composed orientalist, mythological, historical and religious scenes. From 1878, he made sculptures, mainly made in polychrome, his sculptures often represent genre scenes, characters or allegories.
Promoted Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, Gérôme was distinguished at the various Universal Exhibitions in which he participated and he was considered an official painter at the end of the 19th century. He became a professor at the École des beaux-arts, for nearly forty years, and trained more than 2,000 students.
Considered one of the most famous French artists of his time, Jean-Léon Gérôme is one of the main representatives of academic painting of the Second Empire. After enjoying considerable success and notoriety during his lifetime, his violent hostility towards the avant-gardes, and mainly the Impressionists, caused him to fall into oblivion after his death. His work was rediscovered at the end of the 20th century and met with unexpected posterity by becoming, among other things, a source of inspiration for cinema.

Also one of my favorite painters. The way he paints a woman's hips are perfect. The pelvic region is amazing . I'm pretty sure he was a freemason just by the symbolic clues it his work , very nice 🌟

I recognized the the 1812 overture, but not the rest of the music. Could you please advise as to the rest ? So many of your videos do not give accreditation to the music, which would be helpful. I do enjoy your videos and have learned about so many artists that I would not have known otherwise. Many thanks.

The painstaking attention to detail must have frustrated him against the free flowing impressionist art. BOTH ARE AMAZING FOR DIFFERENT REASONS
