- Even as Germany continues to set export records, France’s trade deficit grows ever larger. Germany’s economy is expanding; France’s is stagnating. Germany recently posted a budget surplus; France is battling a large public deficit. Milto Schmidt takes a look at the two economies.

The German economy is a lot better. They have a trade surplus with China, despite 15 times the population. At least, their products are quality made.

Germany manufactures everything. They make world class subcomponents that are state of the art. Something as simple as a screw can be considered high-tech if you factor in the required metallurgical characteristics, quality assurance, acceptable tolerances, etc. They make state of the art machines used in production around the world.
China manufactures toys, gadgets, and appliances.
Germans seem more proactive and strict, while the French seem more Laissez-faire. There needs to be a balance of both. Not to strict and rigid but not too lax and laid back.

I feel that both this video and the people in the comments entirely misunderstand why there is such a large disparity between the French and German economies.
Firstly, measuring economic success only by the trade balance is ridiculous and incredibly mercantilist. For the past 150 years, we have known it to be ludicrous.
Secondly, the reason why Germany has stayed so successful within manufacturing is by artificially lowering wages to a point lower than the market would set them. Germany would otherwise naturally stop manufacturing quite as much and move more into services considering its success. That Germany does this is quite shortsighted and damaging, however, its success within Germany makes it almost impossible to revoke.
Another way to explain trade balance is as follows, "The current account also reflects a comparison of national saving and national investment. By the national income accounting identity the current account balance is equal to the difference between national saving and national investment. Therefore, when a country has a trade surplus (a positive trade balance), national saving must, by definition, exceed domestic investment. That is, a country with a current account surplus is also a net lender (this country uses savings that is not invested domestically to make loans to foreigners). When a country has a current account deficit, national saving must, by definition, be below investment. In this case, the country is a net borrower (as national saving is not sufficient to finance all of domestic investment, and so the extra investment must be financed by borrowing from abroad)."
TL;DR: Trade balance is the relationship between spending and saving. If a country has a deficit it means that they invest more than they save.
That introduces the problem with the German model. By saving as much as they do they take away money from the economy instead of investing it. Slowly but surely that will result in European economic stagnation, hurting Germany in the process.
France would benefit from Germany ending this system, however, arguing that it is the root cause of the French economic crisis would be foolish. Frances problems primarily stem from a stagnant and overly bureaucratic labour market, amongst other things, enacted by well-meaning, but misguided, socialist presidents. Everyone (almost) is able to identify this problem, however, solutions have been hard to implement due to hostile labour unions.
I urge you all not to take my word for it, but to instead investigate yourselves. This is by no means an exhaustive analysis of the situation, but I believe that it sumarises the most important points.

The only tax is 20 % on the basic wage. After there is no others taxs for basic wage . instead of 10 euros per hours we have 8 euros per hours .

What does it mean to 'open' the labour market? Does it mean to stop any and all guaranties? Cause if it does, Germany can keep its growth, in the end if nobody benefits from the growth, it's just empty growth.
On the other hand I do agree that a labour market that's too strict and rigid isn't a good thing. But I never understood what catchphrases like: "open the labour market" mean in actual practical terms. There needs to be a better description.

France has the same problem like many other EU countries and US. You borrow 1 dollar and only make 80 cents! It's called economically not viable. However, US has USD, so they can keep robbing the world without facing consequences like that 18 trillion debt as long as USD is Nr.1. But France doesn't have that, it has to face the fact that they are loosing money by working! It will not be solved by borrowing less (cutting budget), it can only be solved by stop working! Until the formula is positive then restart!

The French have outsourced their industry more. They manufacture their cars abroad, contrary to Germany. But the German labor force will decline with the aging of its population. Moreover, Germany is too dependent of its exports and innovates less than the French.
Finally, the GDP is no longer as significant. as before. And the ecological transition will be more difficult for Germany.

I think the problem is that the world has become a much more selfish place. People will not sacrifice or take any pay cuts to make the country a better place as a whole. Hard work and sacrifice now would lead to a better future. No country can have a deficit, just like a business making a loss can continue that indefinitely. If anything, German trade surplus is a huge problem. It's caused by German lack of domestic investment and lack of markets created by lower wages. France is the model that Germany should follow.

It is no secret of the success of Germany , they are one of the few countries in the world with any commonsense , I live in Australia and if you cold see the reckless stupidity that goes on here it would make a German weep , we have every resource that is imaginable but we have the highest electricity charges in the world , we have all the iron ore and coal in the world but struggle to make steel , all the bauxite in the world but struggle to make aluminum , all the gas in the world and export millions of tons but we cannot afford our own gas , all the land in the world but we cannot afford to buy homes , all the fruit in the world but no one to pick it except European backpackers on a holiday as the Australians will not pick it because they are on welfare , the cause of the problem the same as Britain where it came from , the Fabian Socialist Labor party and its dogma , the slow road to a communist state .

France has a huge public debt of 113%/GDP (Germany 69%) although it is exploiting colonies all over the world and has drained neighbouring Belgium through Sabena/AirFrance, Fortis/BNP, Electrabel/Engie, Dexia/Crédit Local de France ... (hundreds of billions).

The problem of France (and of all Europe) is that Euro is ruled by German Central Bank and not from European Central Bank: it's clear that apart Germany, all euro-zone is declining. Germany will increase its surplus thanks to the deficits of all other European consumers (euro assures competitivity gain to the german goods in european market) : that's why european budget laws starts to being adopted only when Berlin has gained a large numbers of depending-customers.

I went to France and was shocked at how poor it is. So many bad, ran down suburbs. The trains are terrible. The people are awful. The people are very mucky looking. Went to Germany was it was like paradise. Beautiful people and cultures. Long live Germany! France is 100x no where near Germany's success and power.
