The technology for kinect is actually really cool, just not for whatever microsoft wanted you to use it for. You can hook up a kinect to your pc and you've got a budget mo-cap solution. Really useful for indie game development.
it was used for full body tracking in VRchat in the early years of VR
bro I was at the airport and the Jetstar Luggage conveyor belt was just straight up using Xbox One Kinect Sensors

Yes but it makes no sense to use your body as a controller. There are insane limitations, it's not practical and it's not intuitive.
Think about it, try to aim and shoot with mouse (mouse move and left click), now imagine the same process with your body. No controller, not even VR ones or Wii remotes, just body. You can't.
I get why use it in robotics, in computer programming or even as a Smart TV remote but why on earth would you use your body as a controller ?

@@bradlasalle2888 Eh maybe. I think VR will be largely similar just with much smaller headsets, better haptics, and more advanced controls. The problem with Kinect was that it had terrible controls, no haptics whatsoever, and it was already overshadowed by the Wii by the time it came out.

@@whatevero3701 you can modify the playback speed in down to 0.05x increments if you have the Enhancer for RUclips addon, allowing you to go past the regular 0.25x and 2x speeds, or somewhere in between

The kinect was soooo fun, I have so many memories playing with my family - the best games were Star Wars and Pixar-movies games, also the sport games were super fun. I know it didn't work always as it should but I didn't care cause I was a kid and if it worked from time to time than that was all I wanted

Honestly for $100 the Kinect was pretty cool. I still have mine for my 360 and there's a game called Kinect Sports that's basically like a pretty evolved version of Wii Sports. They even made a second one that was pretty good as well. I remember getting drunk as fuck in college and playing that game because there was no controller involved so it got super competitive and was an easy way to get girls involved that wasn't just Mario Kart.
Kinect Sports and Adventure were fire.
i still have xbox 360 and now i can easily play games because now the cost of 20 xbox games is 1 AAA prize of today's game. Kinect was good with family gatherings, i remember all family playing at christmas with me, long hours of great fun.

My first Xbox was the Xbox 360 kinect bundle on Christmas 2010 and i actually had fun with it, dance central and kinect sports was great. The purple themeing for kinect was really cool as you knew which games were kinect.

I do agree that controllers can be a barrier…because most people can learn to move parts body to play a game. Like elderly people and kids or those who have accessibility needs.

I've used Kinect as a developer, the Kinect are actually crazy good and accurate.
The use for most games like shown here just ain't it.
They said at the beginning "the controller is a barrier", that was a good line, but then they continued to show people that can actually use controllers as well. The technology is actually good for disabled people that can't use the controller at all.
Or using the hand-gestures for other use cases other then games. (I used it for a rehabilitation software, there was one a 1 sec clip of this in this whole presentation).

Kinect was actually impressive. The tech would've made much improvement today. However, the company (PrimeSense) that made the tech was bought by Apple and its currently being used for facial biometrics, Face ID. Kinect is still around though, but not for Xbox gaming anymore, but for enterprise and business purposes with cloud integration, called Azure Kinect.
Only if it released nowdays with the better technology it could good but even at that time we had Wii it was 100% better

Ngl I really liked kinect adventures and that game where you had a tiger pet and other virtual pets and you could interact with them. But all in all it was just a gimmic and it got old after about a month of using it.
Everyone is memeing on this but it was so long ago and was literal pogchampion for its time
Dance Central was much better than Just Dance, it was less forgiving since you couldn't cheat and had to actually match your whole body to the dance moves in the higher difficulties.
Kinect was a big failure for gaming but it's tech was actually really well suited for 3D modelling. the way you can take 3D scans with it and port them into 3dsmax or blender really helped out a lot of people including one of my friends with modelling.

The ONLY think i liked about the Kinect was the voice feature. We had sat tv back then and it was so nice to just sit there and go "Xbox go to TV. Xbox play halo 2. Xbox volume up." etc. Its way better than "HeY AlExA" or "HeY SiRi" then having to wait a couple seconds and MAYBE they hear you. The xbox kinect voice was almost instant. Running out of the house just saying "Xbox turn off". My wife was even using the voice controls and shes super stubborn with tech. THEN these asshats switched the voice commands to "HEY FUCKING CORTANA!" Literally NOBODY wants to say HEY CORTANA! Like wtf even is that!?
So yeah, i have fond memories of the kinect. Not playing it, but as an entertainment machine, it worked great for the time.

It was shit, but a super valuable research and development stage to the vr shit we have today. Someone had to do it, at least the justified it by tacking it onto a console for the most part. Basically paid a little extra back then knowing it was gunna be bad for future vr shit to be better.
VR is basically what this should have been and Sony ended up winning on that end.
