  • After an hour long taxi ride with the craziest taxi driver in the whole of Eastern Europe, I finally made it to the village in the middle of nowhere. There I attempted to invade a Bulgarian Village home to see how the people live...Which did not go as planned.
Donkeys and Dogs tried to get me, Knives were pulled and sheep tried to ram me.
I was also later informed that my name in Bulgarian means "Penis"

Hahaha! Dying here of laughing. The Bulgarian village man with the red shirt thought that he could handle a bit of English while in the mean time he doesn't understand sh.t, so he was thinking that you want to buy land and he told you that the land next to his place is for sale but hes wasn't. He didn't know at all that you were asking him to take a look inside his house. He was sending you to the mayor for more info ;) Total misunderstanding there :)

The villagers are convinced that you're looking for a house to buy and point elsewhere while you feel they're not willing to let you inside. Omg I'm really mad about this video. I have seen most of your videos about Bulgaria and I loved them a lot... but this one really made me angry. First you go to a village where nobody speak in English because the people are veery old so most of them speak only Bulgarian and Russian because of the comunism...
The first guy with the red shirt is a gypsy and the poor man does not understand a single word ,he was trying to help you really bad... he even send you to the mayor.
The rest of the people were very kind and tried to help you too.
The old guy with the knife is an typical Bulgarian grandpa that is usually very intelligent and can fix everything in the house and you can always see him with an axe because he is cutting trees in the yard or with a knife because he is fixing something... so somebody called him and he got out really fast wanting to help and forgot about the knife, he gave you his hand,he was reaaaaaaaaly kind even that he doesn't understand a single word . He was thinking that you were looking to buy a house and he even let you in and told you that if you want to see youbare welcome,I'm sure that he would even make you eat and drink rakia with him or he wold be ofended... That's how bulgarian hospitality is. But tha fact you go to a place without knowing a fuck about the village wtf did you expect????? Why don't you go with aome bulgarian friend from the city that speaks English and ask him to translate??? It's not so difficult. They are just great people judged because they don't speak the language that you want.
Imagine me going to Germany speaking in Bulgarian only saying that the germans are racists because they don't understand me ,they don't help me,they don't give me a good work because i could understand only bulgarian costommers(I think its normal because if you can't speak the language you can't understand what do you have to do)
I don't have anything else to say.

I think the idea that someone can go to some village in a foreign country, doesn't speak their language, and also just expecting people to invite you in their houses is quite disrespectful..... Dear Kurt I just watched your video I would like to share couple things with you. First Bulgarians specially in small villages like that are the very welcoming people, friendly and warm hearted. If you ask them I can guarantee that they can help you with food, drinks and even to find you place to stay overnight. Its not true they refused to let them in their houses, simply because they did not understand you. Work on your Bulgarian my friend. Also there are dozens mobile apps, that can help you with translation or maybe find someone local to help you.
Second for many years foreigners are visiting small villages like this one to buy a land or house and to live there (beautiful nature and cheap cost of life) If you pay attention all people from the video were talking to you and wanted to help you, but they were confused that you are looking to buy a house there not to look inside for your video blog. They were confused and since you were not able properly to ask them they assumed you want to get a house there. As you can see most of them are elderly people living very poor life. Do you think that if I visit small village in Germany and start asking random people to look inside their houses speaking Bulgarian they will let me ? And what would be their reaction ? Do you think anyone would do some extra effort and try to help me even without understanding me ?
I had a chance to travel quite few countries on Europe and I know how I was treated as a foreigner and Bulgarian, even though these countries are labelled as democracy and civilized.
For the taxi and most of the services in public sector in Bulgaria I have no comment... unfortunately we are far far away from proper customer service. I am Bulgarian and still I am disappointed with bad experiences.
Try to be prepared little bit more next time, you can always print at home some sheets with the questions you want to ask in Bulgarian or use the google translation.
At the end Bulgaria is a lovely place, very beautiful and amazing as long as you have someone to help you understand our lifestyle and mentality. Stay safe and wish you all the best.

He said one time earlier that he is south african and he is judst saying that he is german to get things easier in counries where the people might not know south africa, which is offensive to bulgarians cause bulgaria is a full mrmber of the european union and the young people there are well educated. Kurt can say a few things in german and i guess his grandfather was german but his father and his mother where both born and raised in south africa. I wrote this long comment because i am german and some people are offending kurt and germany. The funny thing is that the taxi driver who is talking about gypsies as “they” is also a gypsy. In Bulgaria there varieties of gypsies that can be grouped according to the language they speak or religion they practice. There are gypsies who are visibly from gypsy background but will vehemently deny that. Those are the types who are the quickest to bring up the subject of gypsies so that they can refer to them as “they”. That’s what this taxi driver who grossly overcharged and cheated Kurt is doing.😀

As someone who lived in a Bulgarian village as a kid, I can comfortably say that they don't want to let anyone in, even neighbors. Mostly because everyone thinks someone wants to steal their shit, or because they don't want to embarrass the themselves by letting someone see the messy house, especially in small villages like this, there's chickens running around, aggressive dogs. It's not because of a lack of hospitality or hatred, just cuz we really don't want to come across as barbaric or unclean.

I am lithuanian, but studied on Erasmus in Bulgaria before two years. It is very nice to go with natives and be sure that you understand something, and see a lot of interesting things, village people hospitality, otherwise, it would be very very tragicomical and uncomfortable, like in your situation😅.

Hey, Bulgarian here! And I'm a Varna native at that too.
This is so funny, I haven't laughed so hard in a looong, long time.
But this is how people live in the outskirts - it is so poor in most villages, they live a chill life and grow food or do farming (of sorts).
They're friendly but private too and privacy is something to be respected throughout the country especially amongst the elderly, because of the amount of crime and there are also a lot of robberies either from the gypsies or from other villagers, that's why they behave the way they did (if it ain't as obvious as it looks).
Of course this is not manifested in the media and if you don't contact a local that can speak basic English you'll have your hands full haha :D

Hi,I,m Italian but living in Bulgaria, the problem was that the people's think you want buy house in their village, they didn't understand you want just visit their house and see how they live.
The first man recommends you to go to municipality for more information about house for sale ahaha.

I genuinely don't understand why westerners come to live here like we literally study to get the fuck out of here and immigrate to the west... I just don't get it

@@bakadoge5565 Probably remote work? Or high end jobs? For instance I work in IT for a good salary (in Romania, but I suppose Bulgaria is similar), and there are Italian and French guys that moved to Romania and work at the same company, because salaries in IT are similar to western Europe but prices are way lower for rent and stuff like that.

Just a little tip, in that part of the world, you do not enter someone's home empty-handed. You must come bearing gifts and people will set up an entire dinner table for you. Awesome video though!
