I already have a decent amount of models from the original release but it is good to see some of those now in plastic rather than resin. The resin models are good but do present challenges for assembly and the longer parts are prone to distortion. The plastic on the new release is better than the old, which tended to be brittle. I would say that the older kits were slightly more sharply moulded but not so different to be an issue. I do like the slight changes made to the designs of the Frigates as well as the simplified assembly (two instead of four piece hulls, moulded on guns etc) Of course the frigate box set had 8 Frigates and enough parts to build two each out four frigate designs. The new core set has only six Frigates and while each sprue let's you build two Frigates, you can only build one of each type from a single sprue. Same applies for the Cruisers plus as the number of parts are more limited it restricts what options you have. For example if you build the new Sheffield class heavy frigate with two laser cannons, as the sprue has only two laser cannons you cannot also build the laser turret armed Cruiser. The Moscow and St.Petersberg class heavy cruisers are no longer a build option and all designs with the forward upper hull weapons attachments are gone (replaced by a twin mount over the rear hull) but no big loss as I didn't really like those heavy cruiser designs. Although I haven't built any yet I gather you can build two standard destroyers from the UCM light ships set or one heavy destroyer. I suspect that these new plastic kits are not going to yield as many spare parts for the bits box as the original sets although you are going to be left with a lot of redundant frigate forward hulls. However that is just the thing to encourage some creative scratch building of extra rear hull/engine modules. I am already looking at scratch building something appropriate and maybe casting a few to save the effort of multiple scratchbuilds. Overall very impressed with the new models.
I ordered the starter set myself to try to get into 2.0. i wanted to start PHR but UCM just seems easier since they come into the starter. I'd be interested to see when you make the ships a reason why you chose that particular ship variant. I know the starter lists recommended options, but there are a lot of others to choose. As a complete noob to the universe i have no clue what is needed or good.
I think it will depend on the rules but from what I saw of the old version it’s always a good idea to have ships which help complete objectives like dropship and strike craft carriers and bombardment ships.
Honestly I went for the rule of cool. But having a nice mix is so important for the gameplay. Like @AnominousRex already stated, having options is key. Looking at going over ships in detail more down the line.

Why don’t TT Combat sell game mats for Drop Fleet?
They do, however, I believe they are waiting for a restock
