Folklorocity of Maayon Hil-o Hil-o Festival
Philippines is considered as one of the countries rich in terms of culture and history. Early Filipinos have a diverse set of language, practices, beliefs, traditions and folklore. People create information every day. At this day and age, people have witnessed how the society has evolved when it comes to information. Information is therefore essential to survival in the present communities. One way that contributes to the enlightenment of these communities, is through their search for information and knowledge on what happened, what is happening and what will happen in their surroundings.
Thus, one of the principal interests of an enlightened or informed community is the study of local history (Hobbs, 1962). Due to the consecutive efforts of foreign colonization and assimilation, the Filipino culture has suffered a severe attrition that resulted to a loss in historical evidences. Many Filipinos are unfamiliar with their country's literary heritage due to the fact that the stories of ancient times were not written, but rather passed on from generation to generation through verbal communication.
Archeologists and historians unearthed many historical artifacts and ancient archives prior to the cultural practices of the Filipino predecessors, unfortunately, most of the missing links were salvaged by looters and private collectors. Western Visayas is not an exception to such events, people celebrate their traditions that was passed by word of mouth without even understanding the values/meanings of their own folklore and traditions. Researchers across the region have been uncovering the truth as to where their belief and practices originated. Maayon, one of the municipalities of Capiz is rich in culture and lore that was lost through time.
People are unsure of the etymology of their practices and are relying on the word-of-mouth practices which sometimes distorts the true meaning of their cultural heritage. Therefore, this ethnographic study aims to uncover the meaning and purpose behind the traditional celebration of Maayon's Hil-o Hil-o festival and to enrich the locals with the richness of their own heritage.
