This documentary focusing on the loss of her father is an eye opener. I always wondered about her sudden exit from the sport and why all of a sudden she was married at 20 and a mother a few months later. Now it all makes sense that Carling was devastated from the loss of her father and was never the same after that. Once her beloved father was gone finding a loving relationship was more important to her than a career.
as teenager i was her biggest fan.... now in my 40-ties I think back of the times I used to watch her playing. Thanks for posting this document, it made me so happy.
Carling I remember watching you play in the 80's . As a Canadian I was proud of you and rooting for you. What I did not know was your father having cancer or that it was inoperable brain cancer witch happens to be what my father would be taken from us with in 1996. I am sorry you had to deal with as a young woman. It may have happened many years ago but we never forget. My condolences and god bless.
Terrific athlete. It would devastate any young person to lose a beloved parent so young and suffering that grief as a young person who had grown up in the public eye must have been excruciating. I wish her well.
Carling Bassett was ready to become the best Tennis player in the world.she was a wonderful talent.I worshiped her.she had model looks.carling was just very unfortunate.its a tragedy what happened to her father,it affected her so much.carling is a legend and I will always remember her as one of the greats.when ladies tennis is mentioned, carling Bassett is the first person I think off.
i was a teenager when I saw Carling Bassett play. After seeing this I now recall her romance with Robert Seguso. Then she seemed to just disappear from the world. I didn't even know they got married and had a child/children. It was a long time ago and I was consumed with Chris & Martina, John & Jimmy and Ivan Lendl. She popped into my head after watching an old FO86 final with Chris and Martina. Now I know. I hope she is happy and content.
It's amazing how people judge life "success". To many people her dropping out of the game was a downhill move, but sometimes it takes a tragic, earth shattering awkening for what you really want to come into focus. And what she really wanted to transfer her loss into something that gives her fullfilment in her case it was starting a family.
In the mid '90's when Monica Seles was having a difficult time in her comeback after being stabbed by that psycho in Germany, Bassett said something to the effect of, " *Oh, just get over it* ."
For a spoiled kid like Carling Bassett who group up in a privileged background, especially one who had her own physical and psychological issues, to say something like that was very telling of her character. Whatever sympathy I may have had at the time for Bassett, completely disappeared.
Carling lives in Bocas Raton? She's probably chummy with Evert, who also lives there. Wonder if Evert bought the same tennis academy that Bassett sold in 1997?
nevertheless the match aggainst chris evert was one o her best matches Carling ever played. Especially the first set was on a high professional competitive level.I think with the death of her dad she also gave up tennis and the competitor in herself was gone like her dad.Without a doubt she had the talent to be number one of the world.

Carling is a Warrior and Survivor
Like Seles, Carling played in the French very soon after the passing of her father. I can't even fathom how difficult that must be...
Before there was Sharapova and before that Kournakova, there was Carling Bassett.
You’re a true champion, Carling
carling was an amazing tennis player seems like a wonderful lady now
So sad about her father.... reminds me in a way of Monica Seles who lost her father to cancer as well.
Carling losing her dad to cancer reminds me of Seles losing her dad around the same age. Both players' games were never the same again.

Well honestly that’s how the other players felt, she said it. The real issue for Monica was the man didn’t do a day in prison
@@willnill7946 Other players felt the same way? They wouldn't feel that way had they been the one who got stabbed.
Seguso looks alike Roland Orzabal
You were not the only one :)
