Rimini is a city in Emilia Romagna, Italy, on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most popular tourist and holiday towns on the northern Adriatic. However, Rimini is not only a beach and sea, but also a historic town with many valuable monuments. It gets magical when night falls. Federico Fellini, an Italian film director, was born in Rimini.
Rimini, Latin Ariminum, city, Emilia-Romagna region, northern Italy. The city is situated along the Riviera del Sole of the Adriatic Sea at the mouth of the Marecchia River, northeast of Mount Titano and the Republic of San Marino
The Romans called it Ariminum, from Ariminus, the old name of Marecchia, and according to the 1st century BC Greek historian Strabo, it originally belonged to the Umbro-Etruscan civilization. This place was taken in 268 BC by the Romans, and a Latin colony was established here on the border of Emilia and Umbria. As a crossroads of the great Roman roads, Via Emilia and Via Flaminia, it became a Roman municipium (community) and was later freed by the dictator Sulla. In 359, the city hosted the Council of Rimini, which did not resolve the Arian dispute over the divinity of Christ. Rimini passed into the hands of the Byzantines, and from them the Goths, from whom it was recaptured by the Byzantine general Narses, and then the Lombards and the Franks.
The city was the subject of papal-imperial rivalry for a long time, especially after it became an independent commune in the 12th century. The leader of Guelfa (papal), Malatesta da Verucchio, was appointed podestà ("mayor") in 1239, but internal disputes continued until members of the Malatesta family were declared rulers of the city in 1334. It was during this period that Gianciotto (Malatesta) Kulawy killed his wife Francesca da Polenta and brother Paolo, her secret lover; the tragedy was immortalized in Dante's Hell and in Francesca da Rimini Silvio Pellico.
the most famous of the Lords of Malatesta was Sigismondo Pandolfo (1417-1468), a soldier and patron of the arts who was responsible for Rimini's 15th-century fortifications and for its most famous monument, the Malatesta Temple, to glorify his love for Isotta degli Atti. Sigismondo was accused of killing his first and second wives in order to marry Isotta. This suspicion and his quarrels with other rulers and the papacy led to his impeachment by Pope Pius II in 1461. Sigismondo was forced to surrender and cede most of his territory to the Pope, keeping only Rimini and a few lands. He was succeeded by his illegitimate son Roberto, who got rid of his legitimate heirs, and later reconciled with the pope, becoming the commander of the papal army. Robert's son, Sigismondo, failed to defend his lands against Cesare Borgia, and Rimini was transferred to the Papal States in 1509. With the exception of a brief French domination during the Napoleonic Wars, the city remained under papal control until it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
In the 19th century, Rimini expanded beyond its walls to become a seaside resort, development accelerated by the establishment of the coastal suburbs south of the city after 1920. Its seaside resorts extend almost 10 miles (16 km) between Torre Pedrera and Miramare.
Roman remains in Rimini include the Arch of Augustus, built in 27 BC and completed in 22 AD by Emperor Tiberius; a bridge built by Augustus over the river and also completed by Tiberius (21 AD); and the ruins of the Roman amphitheater. Malatesta temple, which was rebuilt from the old gothic church of St. Only the ruins of the castle (1446) and the city walls that were built by Sigismondo Pandolfo remained. Other notable buildings include the restored Palazzo dell'Arengo (1204), a picture gallery, the city library, and several medieval and Renaissance churches.
