  • In today's requested video, we look at 'CYCLAMEN CARE AFTER FLOWERING', specifically, the houseplant Cyclamen (AKA Cyclamen persicum and its hybrids). I show you my modest cyclamen collection - most still in full bloom, but showing signs of beginning to go dormant. We discuss their care needs, and then talk about their natural habitat and what happens to them after flowering in the wild. We then go on to describe how you can replicate that natural dormancy, so that next year they'll come back to give you a bigger and better show!

      So I am clear, I wait for mine to stop flowering or can I start now in reducing water to put in dormancy? I still have quite a few blooms coming but the leaves are starting to yellow

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 года назад

      @@TrishsOrchidLife With many plants that go dormant you can play around with the dormancy period to a certain extent. You only need to look at shop-bought orchids as an example which are very often brought into bloom 'out' of season (Dendrobium nobiles!). So it's up to you. If you're ready to send it off into dormancy then simply reduce the watering.

    Great information, I have a sweet little red one just like the one you have. It is now the end of June and the flowers are fading. So I think I will put it in the basement where it is much cooler. Come Sept or Oct. I will repot it and hopefully it will bloom for me.
    Thank you from Canada.

      Sounds like a good idea. I would really cut back on watering too, till the leaves turn yellow. One word of caution though - don't let the media completely desiccate during dormancy. I've made that mistake and lost tubers. Just keep it ever so slightly moist.

      Thanks Sma I'm glad you enjoyed it. I know very little about growing in leca. Cyclamen have very fibrous roots under the tuber - would they be suitable for such a media? It would be interesting to find out.

      Any general purpose fertiliser will be fine - I prefer slow release just to save me feeding every week! This is an older video - so if your plants are beginning to dormant (which is very early to be honest - they should be in full bloom right now) then this video explains what to do: ruclips.net/video/ncH6TyOhkI0/видео.html

    Thanks for the info packed video. I’m watering once a week in winter and they’re going gangbusters; come summer/dormancy how often should I water them? Once a fortnight? Once a month? Thanks…….

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 года назад

      My pleasure Richard! Personally, I don't water cyclamen at all during dormancy. Not even once. They're used to long periods of drought during the summer months in their natural habitat so they'll be perfectly OK with this. I then bring them back to life by slowly increasing watering from around Sept/Oct time ready for their winter blooming. I've found this works fine for me. Good luck!

    great video I have a hybrid cyclamen that ive had for many years comes up every year without trouble however i have bought many persicum from my local nursery over the years " different colours" and they never come back again the next year, and anything that shows some sort of life the next year only has leaves no flowers. I have watched many videos on you tube and one guy from "stinky ditch nursery" says the nursery cyclamen will never come back after its finished flowering because he says they are bred to do just that. What are your thoughts on that? would love to know why they never come back...I had the hybrid given to me many years ago how do I go about getting more " hybrids"? TIA

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Rose. I've heard someone tell me that once before in the comments - although I'm not sure why that particular characteristic would be bred into them and it hasn't been my experience so far. I've lost them to rot over winter, and I also think many nursery plants have such small tubers they just aren't 'robust' enough to survive a dormancy in less than perfect conditions. I've found the bigger the tuber the better it can cope with my version of a dormancy and so far they've always returned to bloom. It's always going to be a gamble with any plant that isn't kept in its natural habitat, and cyclamen are so cheap that losses don't hurt us too much. After blooming make sure to continue watering and feeding to build the tuber up for next year until they start to die down naturally. As far as getting hold of more hybrids - I don't know where you live - but in the UK most nurseries and garden centres sell them and of course they're available online. You can also often get some good hybrids via seed, which is another option. I've never tried it myself, but I believe most of the cyclamen persicum hybrids do actually 'come true' again from their seeds, so you might want to try collecting a few. Good luck!

    I got a little guy not to long ago , and I believed it to be over watered , but now it looks less vibrant ? The soil is dry and I did moist it a little but I’m not sure if I should let it be or water it till summer time . I like in Oklahoma and it’s winter here . How ever it’s not to cold of one

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Год назад

      If it's dry I would water it providing it's it's still in bloom or in full leaf. Don't forget - winter is their main season. They should be in full growth and blooming in winter. Summer is their dormant period.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Год назад

      Cyclamen, like many other plants for the garden and houseplant trade, are very often manipulated into flower out of their natural cycle of growth and dormancy. You can either keep it going until it runs out of steam all by itself, or 'force' a dormancy on it by reducing water and light.

    I wish I could send u a picture of mine. I’m not sure what to do right now, it’s not blooming but there is new growth but my leaves are kinda growing all over in directions.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  7 месяцев назад +1

      Cyclamen tend to do that when they haven’t received enough light in the first instance when they were just coming into growth. But then it’s too late to do anything about it and they look straggly until new leaves come. Just make sure it’s getting enough light, the temps are right and give it a feed too. Good luck!

    Do you use an all purpose fertilizer.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 года назад +1

      Yes Linda - I tend to use either the fertiliser sticks you push into the compost then forget about, or the fertiliser pellets - same thing - you can forget about it. One 'application' will then last whole blooming season.
