Good luck! And don't go drowning on me!! Tomorrow is Jan 20th and I haven't been out all year. Oh man, I'm overdue. And we've got a horse show this weekend so no fishing time until at least a week from now!
Good Morning Sir Matt, the Green Peter looks challenging but that's ok I like that. I will give it a go. Have a great day Sir and thank you for all you do Matt.
Thank you, Matt. I generally start my mornings with your latest offering and drink my coffee from my Savage Flies mug! (You left the wing out of the recipe ...)
Great looking fly, I know it will catch fish. Matt love your channel one of the best out there. I got the books from you on Christmas give away, they are awesome. I will be sharing them with my neighbors kid / cousin he is 12. He will love them. Thanks again Matt!!
Hi Matt, great tying of a traditional Irish lough fly. I've also seen a number of variations, including a Muddler version, a Disco Peter, and an Octopus Peter! Kind regards David
Wow, I would love to have come across those variations! Actually, this one caught my attention because of the cool name. And Disco Peter, and Octopus Peter? Those are even better names!
God that's an old one, an Irish Lough caddis/sedge imitation that will work anywhere. I've had some great catches over here on the Scottish Lochs. Doesn't need to be perfect as it's usually fished in a wave and takes are savage!
That's awesome to hear Graham! I had never heard of it here in the states but when I looked it up, I saw that Davie and Barry and some of the other UK tiers have done it. And when I looked to see where it's sold, all the shops were over your way. Funny how that works, that some flies just don't get popular over here.
I love some of these old school patterns. There must be more than a 1/2 dozen patterns with the Palmered technique. One of my favorites is the picket pin. That old time pattern as a wet fly lured many larger trout to be netted. These types of flys probably are lethal in the size 10-12. I’ll give this pattern a try since it probably is a fun pattern that with some color changes will work very well. Keep the old time patterns coming . It seems nobody else does them. ( must not like wings and marriage wings since they can be very challenging. Also many materials are hard to find or are unavailable)😮. Thanks Matt
You're absolutely right Ed! Seals fur is kind of hard to find, but there's nothing else out there like it. And I love resurrecting these old patterns for future generations to see. :-)
I’m a little late getting to this one. Thank you for sharing Matt. Nothing wrong with this fly Sir. Pretty cool looking to me. I’d be happy with this tie any day of the week buddy.
Thanks Matt! Great fly but I think the real value of this particular video is the concepts you discuss, specifically: this is a fish catching fly, not a magazine cover! It doesn't have to perfectly match the original pattern to be effective!
Nice buggy looking fly. Thanks Matt. A few months ago I tied the Carrowmore Green Peter. It is very similar but uses squirrel for the wing. Will have to try this version for sure. Warmest regards
Nice fly Matt, it has a caddis look for sure and I believe it will be a fish catcher. As always my friend, thank you for sharing and have a fantastic day.
That was a fun challenge. Reminds me of tying a Stimulator where there is a lot going on and trying to fit it all on in the right proportions. After a few ties I would get it down. Good job.
Awesome channel, Matt. Since being introduced to it today *smiles* I love that the video is so detailed and very well informed! This is very entertaining and makes me want to learn more! Thanks for sharing and doing what you do! This is awesome!
Hahaha! Thanks Tony! I'll be happy to teach you tying if you can teach me how to make better audio. (I did move the mic closer for Friday's video.) :-)
Excellent tie Matt ! The mistakes is what I like best. How to correct a mistake should make us all better tiers, I know it does me. I say several different colors for the body should make this a excellent fish catcher. Thanks Matt. 👍
I tie something similar for Idaho except the body is redish brown or rabbit dubbing. I also tie my feather in at the tip at the bend of the hook with the wire. I found the feather holds up a little bit longer. The best part about your videos if something goes wrong you show how to overcome it without throwing away the fly and starting over.
Matt, great video. This fly is also shown in Mike Dawes book," The Flytier's Manual" tied traditionally as both a wet fly with swept back hackle and as a dry fly with Palmered hackles and a bronze mallard feather wing. It is a traditional Irish sedge (caddis) pattern for lake fishing.
Thanks Richard! I've tied a few black gnats, but I don't think I've done any with a chenille body. I'll have to see if I have any small enough and then add it to my to-do list. Thanks for the note!
Good lesson in fishing fly recovery, remember, ugly flies catch fish. In combat fishing situations, ugly flies catch more fish than than the 37 carbon copies that others are offering. I have caught bass on a bare hook under a chartreuse bobber. As long as the point is exposed and you can tie it on the leader, it can work. Thanks Matt I always enjoy your videos.
Green Peter is a great fly over here in Scotland. So many variants too, you can be sure one of them will be successful. It took a while for me to get my head around flies that are going to be fished don’t need to be perfect. You just have to look at the state they get into after a couple of fish and continue to catch despite this. I’d say it makes more sense to tie three okay-ish flys and catch fish in them, rather than spending 30mins tying one pretty fly that will catch just as many fish.
Exactly right Lee! I've got some patterns in my fly box that I'm hesitant to tie on because I spent 30 minutes tying them! So what good are they if I don't even fish them?? That was a lesson I learned a few years ago and now most of my flies are for fishing. :-)
Great video Matt. What happens if you put that dubbing in a dubbing loop? Just curious never tied with it before. Great looking fly Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mike! A dubbing loop would make it a good bit neater. I did one before this video with a loop but that adds about an extra minute or two to the tie (for me anyway), and I usually try to keep my videos under 7-8 minutes. But if you're not tying for a video, I say go for it!
Awesome choice. I really like those UK loch flies. I think some of the names equate a pattern style making for lots of variants, adding a feature of one to another, sort of like those Transformers - I couldn't figure out those things either. I like George Barron's ties. Thanks Matt.
Oh man, Transformers. What a great concept to think about when creating fly patterns! But honestly, this one caught my attention because of the cool name. What the heck does a "green peter" even mean?? Okay, it's after midnight and I just finished Friday's video. I just had a long weekend and now I already need another one. :-)

Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Really enjoy watching you tie the old flies. Without a step by step recipe I’m thinking I wouldn’t have thought to secure the body hackle at hook end with the tinsel. I probably would have tried taking my thread back before palmering and then had a mess when I took it back to secure the tinsel. I’ve seen you do that before. How do you know when to do that? Experience or recipe or a little of both? Thanks Matt. Have a great week.
Great question John! Honestly, I usually try it like you mentioned first, and if it ends up being a disaster, I'll try to secure it with the rib. Or... I'll watch a better tier than me tie it and see how they do it. (If I'm tying a fly that Barry Ord Clarke has a video on, sometimes I'll straight up copy him!)
Hey Matt, got an idea for you. Would you up to do a fly on two to three different hook types. Like a stemi on a straight shank vs curved shank. To see the difference. 😊 Awesome tie by the way
Great idea Sam! I'm going to see if I can work it in. Maybe I'll just tie one version, and show what it would look like on different type hooks. If I tried to show all versions being tied, it would be a 20 minute video that nobody would watch! (And it would take me forever to make. :-) )
Since you mentioned Loch fishing….It would be great if you could cover Gordon Mackenzie Beautiful flies. Just found out about him recently and there is just not enough out there about him. Great video
