Hey everyone, sorry my voice sounds weird. I'm getting over an awful sinus infection. It should be back to normal next video. Also on a happy note the 2 other leaves I had actually started growing roots. I went to throw them out yesterday and noticed they finally sprouted tiny roots 😁
Honestly, you could have just walked in with a dolly and a safety vest, and walked right back out with an entire plant complete with a genuine mall planter box.
It's doing well. Also, those 2 other leaves actually started growing little roots 🙂 I was going to throw them out yesterday but noticed they both had little roots forming finally.
Taking plant clippings from malls is a great idea. I would love to see you take more from others and have a little "mall garden" going in your backyard.
Hi! Resident crazy plant lady here! I LOVE this idea! Buuut to make sure your cutting survives, I would recommend that you actually plant that propagated cutting into a much smaller pot for now, I would say a 4" pot would be ideal until it is fully established. The reason being is that if you plant a small cutting in a giant pot, the roots aren't able to reach through the entire pot, through all the soil, to drink up the water you provide it... so the roots are going to be sitting in this wet mucky mess until the soil eventually dries out on it's own. This, in turn, can smother the roots and deprive them of oxygen, causing something called "root rot", which is exactly what it sounds like. This more than likely will cause the plant to die. ALSO, if you do happen to see this comment and repot it, I would recommend that you use a more chunky soil, like an orchid bark mix (I like the brand Black Gold), as this helps aerate the soil so oxygen can get to the roots AND it helps the water to drain through the soil more easily, preventing root rot. The pot you have now appears as though it doesn't have proper drainage holes on bottom and is going to trap most all of the water you would give the plant in the soil, again causing root rot. SO, tl:dr, repot in a 4" pot, with orchid bark mix. Water once every 7 days for the 4" pot and about every 10 days or so whenever you repot into a 6" after it's established. They enjoy bright indirect light, around 50% humidity, and can either vine downwards or climb up if you provide it a moss pole (the leaves actually can get MASSIVE if you provide enough light and give it something to climb up). Anyway, hope this helps! Sorry this was so long. I need to get a life.
I moved it to a smaller pot 🙂 The pot I used had a built in drainage system, there was a grate in the bottom that the soil sits on top of and allows excess water to drain into a reservoir in the bottom. I thought using the bigger pot would give it "room to grow", I didn't realize it was bad for the roots. Thanks for the advice!
@@RetailArchaeology You're so welcome! In a few months (probably around 6 or so) after he's established his root system and has put out a decent amount of new growth you can probably up-pot him but only go with a pot that is an inch or two bigger in diameter (that's the general rule of thumb for up-potting most plants). Please please please keep us updated on it! And if you're able, snag more mall plant cuttings because I think this is such a cool idea!
Man I hope your plants do well. Thats a nice way to save a piece of history and have a memory. Its a neat plant as well. I think we had one like it growing up.
That’s golden pothos. Don’t worry about how long you left it in water. They can live permanently in a bowl of water. It wants indirect light, like a room with a window but not in direct sun.
The elements of the mall. Plants (Earth), Fountains (Water), Skylights (Air), And I guess neon is fire...? Anyway, I hope you're getting better, Erik. Definitely looking forward to seeing an update video on the Power Square plant in the future!
I take cuts off plants all the time! CloneX is great for rooting cuttings- Having genetics from a dead mall would make a cool garden! Use a razor blade for a sharp cutting before dipping! Mall Plant starts might become fashionable...
@@utubepunk I do that but with seeds I have extra of. Hopefully next year thousands of Malabar spinaches will appear, if they do, it will be total anarchy here on the farm.
Absolute magic. I went to the states in 99 for a semester as an exchange student. I bought one of these cameras whilst there and and your video brings back all these memories.
Fun video! Keep us updated on the plant adventures! Not gonna joke, I may have to make a trip to my somewhat dead mall next weekend to do the same thing 😆. Long time watcher and always enjoy your videos. Thanks!
I remember my high school photo class kept one of these under lock and key and only brought it out for "Digital photography is the way of the future" talks.
You should water the cutting in ASAP so the roots stay damp until it settles in a bit! Those are amazing plants. Once they get established they are amazingly productive for the little care they need. They can grow dry roots in the air, but since those roots grew in water I would start them out in damp soil for sure. Love your channel. It's totally awesome.
Never thought about taking clippings from dead mall plants! Even though it sounds like something I would do. However, I'm not about to step into my own dead mall around where I live due to high crime rates in that mall lol, not worth it. Also, the photos are so neat!
I have a pothos too! I found it in a vase by a dumpster one day, took it in, and I haven’t managed to kill it since. It’s been through three moves, and I constantly forget to water it. A great plant for a dead mall.
You can use something called Rootine or Routone something along those lines, as it depends on the company that sells its. It promotes advantageous roots forming so you can plant your trimming. I used to run the green house on campus in college and was allowed to take free clippings of anything.
Very cool--love the idea of a transplanted mall plant! There are a few malls near me that I wish I thought to do that before they changed to the more clinical look & removed their planters.
Aw hell yeah new vid i hopped on the vid so fast!! suuuper great watch and info :00 :D yoo love the floppy disc camera dang i need one, also love the pics Also super cool you got some clippings from the plant
I just imagine the mall security seeing you walk around with a bandolier and a camera. They stop you and go "what's in the pouches?" And you go "floppy disks."
I’m so sad this mall is gone. It was a huge part of my youth. School shopping, ice cream at the little cafe. I even brought kids here when I was babysitting to play on the rides and walk through the toy store for something to do!
they probably would have just given you an entire mall plant in its pot, but I get what you are trying to do clipping it it’s fun that you are giving plant the ambiance it is used to lol
I think I now want to do this, if any malls near me I'm fond of ever become dead. And if only there was a way into Charlestowne Mall, since I'd love to save a plant or 2 inside that mall. And also great pics, you got on that floppy disc camera!
That was my first digital camera. I remember how impressive it was for the time. After I upgraded I sold that one to the body shop I worked at. We would keep the floppy in the cars file with all the pics of the repairs. Now we just use an app on our phones

Ahh I remember diving through my neighbors trash who was a doctor back in the day. He always threw away the coolest stuff. He threw away a box of floppy polaroids/ kodak discs. In that pile was also a Tandy 1000. As an 8 yo child I'm pretty sure it weighed 1000 lbs. Finally up three flights of stairs up to my bedroom where I set up the tandy. It fired right up and I inserted 1 of thousands of floppies. Well needless to say I only made it through 1 disc and I think that may of been the end of my Dr. neighbor guys marriage. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ He did have a sick Chrysler Lebaron convertible he would take me around town in. Shit I'm having old people flash backs...... cant hold them back! He used to pay me $20 a day to walk his dog. I'd shovel his driveway and he would give me a crisp $50 bill. (Omg please stop me I'm put of control. ) He used to build model ships and airplanes and I got them all from the curb after the divorce. And the cat. I just wont mention the time I walked in on his wife dropping a robe. Because kids in my time used to just bust up in the cool neighborhood houses with AC and watch their cable and eat snacks. Everyone knew which house was off limits. I apologize for the boomer rant. I'm not well

He's got a great video up on his channel showing the progress the art school has made. I can't wait to see how the school turns out. I think it's a fantastic idea for reusing the space.
Almost looks like Home Depot bought the mall. The orange kinda gave it away. They really need to turn old department stores and old malls into paintball/airsoft arenas. Could you imagine the battles and probably the insurance you'd have to carry to own and operate. OuCh! 😳
that's a real treasure you have there. Just pray you can keep it alive. Knowing me I would probably kill it since I don't have a green thumb as my brothers do

Good choice on the Pothos. That should grow for you just fine, they're nice and easy to get going again. Good luck with your new Mall plant!

Nice souvenir! You should try to get a hold of a genuine mall planter to transfer the plant when it gets too big for the pot.

What if you did a whole garden of just plant clippings from all the malls?!
make sure to keep them indoors like in a mall, they are not designed to survive the brutal AZ sun.
