Lemmy wrote this song after watching a documentary series
about the first world war on British television.
Lemmy's version - with his raspy voice singing this moving song
    to a simple organ accompaniment.
Being brought up in Yorkshire every village, town and city has a war memorial
as well as my school had one in its lobby.

I've been trying to place the history to the names of the soldiers listed in the credits. Not counting the Knights and the Spartans, so far I've come up with:
The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015.
Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war."
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. in his book "Rank and File: True Stories of the Great War"
The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII. Sgt Awal Nur, who took part in a secret mission over the Himalayas, Lt. Audie Murphy the highest decorated soldier in US history who served in WWII. Sgt. Alvin York a humble man from Tennesse who was awarded the Medal of Honor in WWI for exceptional bravery under fire, just to name a few.
I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII.
Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad and Senegal had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. Damn, Sabaton REALLY does their research! I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him.
ATS Ivy Valentine is coming up on a dead end, I found that the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) was the British version of the American WAC's, but I cannot find anything about her name.
As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia.
Capt. Dobson, 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Killed on 9 July 1916 in Flanders.

Nice reaction to Lemmys epic song. Sabaton really made an epic tribute to both Lemmy and the fallen soldiers.

Thank You so much Mia. I have not mentioned a loads of things. I am under some heavy threatment right now... hehe. Couple of months and hopefully I will be okay. But thats a rough period of my life. In an alternate universe I should re-react this Anthem again. I have just missed so much. :)

No buddy, sometimes there are worse things than dead. Accepting surrender terms or fighting is sometimes the only options you have... and its simply not right to allways falter when some madman requires something from you.
Those situations repeat again and again and again in history, and you say it is ALLWAYS fault of too stupid people? It's not as easy as that!
And BTW, i live some 200km NW of you, so have too close, allmost personal view on the things.

    • @bodresz
      @bodresz  Год назад +3

It is never simple, but why? Cause people make it hard. Fighting for territories cause economic wealth and or "so called" historic reasons. War is bullsh*t and leave only dead behind and families torn apart. Anyway as far as we can, we should live in peace. 😎

@@bodresz Certainly, often it is pure madness, but there are also many cases where it is just not enough when one side is reasonable...

@@bodresz remember also that one side may have zero choice in the matter. I’m sure Ukraine would like to just be going on with their day to day lives right now, but they couldn’t just let Russia take them over. There are large powers in this world that can turn their attention to any of our countries tomorrow and we can lay down and be ruled by communist/tyrants or fight to protect what we have. Freedom is not a lifetime guarantee!! Some still don’t have it today. There are times when we have to fight for our continued way of life. And I feel that is the only justifiable reason for war.
