  • Welcome Landcruiser Nuts,
In this video, I will be replacing an o-ring and an oil seal on a 1994 FZJ80 speedometer gear assembly. It has been leaking for some time on my customers truck. Never fear this is any easy fix, just don't drop anything. There are pieces that could go missing as you will see in the video.
    Tool Used:
    12 mm Ratchet and Socket
Pick for getting off old O-ring
    Part Numbers:
    90310-09001- Oil Seal
    96711-24030 - O-Ring

Was watching this and had a thought. Maybe leaving that oil seal out is some sort of a hack. Leave it out and it keeps the top keyed pin part lubricated and stops it wearing out? Just a thought.

Jax, that would not be advisable to leave the oil seal out. Almost every manufacturer uses an oil seal in the speedo gear. It’s there to keep oil from
escaping the transfer case. Not having the oil seal was what was causing the leak. Thanks for your comment and for watching. Also do you own an 80?

Yeah I have a 1997 40th anniversary edition here in Australia. The reason I thought that about the seal is that I know some guys run their rear axles with no oil seal and let the diff oil lubricate the wheel bearings.
