Ok... one small thing to correct here. The wedge block itself didn't technically hurt anyone. The problem with the wedge block was that it was so effective that the only way to stop it is to send someone in at full speed (usually a backup linebacker or fullback) kamikaze style to collide with it to break it. A properly orchestrated wedge was almost impossible to stop on kickoffs.
I would like to see it legal and the kicking team put a linebacker in the backfield just to knock the jumper out in mid air. Would be a great slow mo vid.
At the end of the day the nfl is just soft and are making the wrong decisions. Tom Brady is right, it is pretty much impossible to make a good (legal) play on defense. If you think that it’s too dangerous maybe you should not be playing football 🤷😢
@dstras06 that's what I'm wondering. If you can grab around the shoulder pads, and you can't grab around the hips, how do you even stop someone that you chased down? Maybe grab a shoelace? Try to kick their feet? I really don't know
I don't agree with most of these banned plays ... that's the nature of the beast ! What's next, are the players gonna have to smile at a runner before they tackle them ?
When I k´played rugby as a kid that hip tackle was the very first defensive move I learned. Our trainer kept on telling us it would be the savest ( meaning least dangerous in terms of injuries) way of tackling if done right. It is pretty weird to me that they would ban that in football when they still allow to shoulderblock and closeline other guys.
Hip drop is pretty safe if you wrap both legs then swing under particularly with guys mostly under 200-230 lb But as soon as you start with guys at 250 lbs who grab the waist and swing under the legs without wrapping up first bad things happen.
Hip drop tackle rule is such bullsh!t It’s gonna be a disaster. Hopefully it’s not called on a 4 down game ending tackle in the playoffs or Super Bowl. I played 12 years of football up to semi pro from pee wee. I don’t see how you can avoid wrapping around (which is proper technique) and always keeping your feet, if the runner outweighs you your gonna fly a bit. Bs rule
Its gonna be a bitch for umps and players you just know its gonna change a game. How in the hell are supposed to bring down a guy you are chasing, only thing left is dive at their feet and try to trip them up. That will lead to ankle injuries eventually. The game is gone, hell they are all but eliminating the Kick offs. Every season it s something taken away, pass interference, illegal contact, hands to the face, hit the QB in the head, drive the QB to the ground, and so on.
The problem is that the ball carriers are strong and attempt to break the tackle and gain the extra "inch" , if they control their body and go to ground there will be no problem. I played Rugby for 25+ years, all the way to the top levels. Standard tackle is head hehind the ball carrier, wrap the leg (s) and pull the player to the ground, safe for the tackler AND the ball carrier. There are lots of injuries in rugby but not from "hip tackling" which EVERYONE uses
If you don’t wanna get hit play ping pong is the way I see it!! I played high school football in GA and man our Coaches in the south wanted you to hurt players and get hurt to makes us tougher!!! That was 20 years ago and man it’s changed since!!
@@LagMasterSam I think it's a response to receivers attempting to get "every extra inch" after a catch. When you HAVE to get the ballcarrier down wrap a leg (planting it) and then drop. IF the ball carrier recognizes he's caught, he goes down no harm, if he attempts to move he's planted and in trouble.
Just to be clear, leaping over the long snapper is only illegal if you had to make contact with another player to do it, especially the long snapper. If you can get over the long snapper clean, it's legal.
They changed that its illegal all together. in 2017. "NFL owners passed a rule to prohibit players from leaping over offensive linemen during kicks," from NFL article "NFL bans line leaping, approves ejections for head hits" Before that you were correct.
Hip drop tackle is just a normal tackle. You wrap them up and fall down. What are you supposed to do if the initial contact doesnt drop them? Are you supposed to let them go? Injuries suck but its a physical game. If you dont want injuries then just make it flag already.... Also, how are you supposed to differentiate batting the ball forward and lunging to grab it?
hip-drop tackle is the dumbest rule I've ever seen. It's the first thing most tacklers would naturally do to stop a runner ahead of them in forward motion.
You know there is setbing else going on the hip drop tackle when even the NFLPA is against a new rule for "player safety." More ambiguity in officiating. Just what we need.
How did Deacon Jones injure Gene Hickerson? I can't find anything about that. Only that he sadly had CTE and that he played when head slaps were common. I don't think it's fair to say Jones was responsible for that, he wasn't the only person doing it at all. I might be wrong but don't even think he was the first to do it, he just popularised it as a signature thing he did. A lot of players did it, though. I'd honestly imagine more serious head trauma from tackles and head to head collisions was more likely the cause of the CTE than head slaps. Losing hearing or so on, sure, that seems likely from it, but CTE is so much more likely to come from hard tackles than head slaps, surely?
Brain damage can occur on one head slap from a high school kid. He was 6’5 DE. I love Deacon Jones but another way to look at it, maybe he didn’t cause Gene’s CTE by himself, but he contributed to many other cases.
I don;t remember who the player was but he ended Jones head slap right quick. He put a 2" screw through his helmet from the inside. When Jones slapped him, he ended up with a hole in his hand.
I was calling that "hip drop tackle" the "ride tackle". Every time I saw that tackle, I was like ah man that's a dangerous way to tackle someone. NFL banning it in 2024 makes a ton of sense. It was like they would grab with both arms and fling their lower torso and legs forward and ride the opponent down. It doesn't sound bad but when you see it, it's like ah man because of the sudden opposing force it imposes on the opponent. The 2 popular tackles around 2023 was that "hip drop tackle" and the "arm tackle". That arm tackle does impose a sudden opposing force but it must not create injuries otherwise it would have been banned also.
Loved the Raiders beating the Chargers on the Holy Roller but I've looked at the play many, many times over the decades and it looks more like Stabler passed the ball rather than fumble it.
The Vick play wasn’t a fake slide he was keeping his balance after getting grabbed by the D Lineman but he was absolutely down. And Josh “fake slide” wasn’t really that it was more of a stutter move. Pickett actually dragged his foot on the ground and got back up that was a fake slide.
Hey, LOL, they retired the head slapped after Decon Jones retired. What's the matter, no one wanted to tell him to stop that while he was still playing LOL?
It they didn’t ban it, you’d have teams send multiple guys over the line and offenses would have figure out how to combat it, or they collide with the QB or RB and that’s when you’d have your most athletic players injured. No one wants to see a season full of backup players on every team. Also, that’s not football, defenders have to either fight off blocks or fill gaps to get to the ball. Jumping over a blocker is like saying you’re scared of them.
Hamstringing the defense to get higher scores and more fan engagement for fans who do not know what they are watching. As for the danger, I would agree to more protections if they made the same amount of money as the common man, but they don't. While we are about banning things, how about banning runners from lowering their heads during imminent tackle attempts. The defensive guys get penalized if their helmets hit the runner, but the runners are not being penalized for the same actions.
Honestly, I've lost interest in the NFL since the whole kneeling incident with Colin Kaepernick for the 49ers. Players are just greedy and demanding and unappreciative. As far as all these can't do it's taken away the fun of the NFL. How are you supposed to play the game with 15 different can't do's?? It's ridiculous.
It's August 2024 and the '24 NFL season has started. I'm not exaggerating at all. I'm very serious. Young people don't have a clue and think watching NFL video clips on youtube from 70s, 80s, 90s and early 00s gives them a good idea how tough it was. It was barbaric. Just watch the video for pete sake for a "glimpse" of all the changes. And its not only NFL but NBA got ridicously weaker. Boxing smh...back then, boxers had murderous energy. Even MLB back then was better. Hockey etc. Even in WWE. Wrestling, even though its pure scripted, was more brutal physically... But back to NFL, so soft man. No point having a discussion about this with anyone under 25-30 years old. Athletes were built different. Just listen to podcasts or interviews from older players who are alive. Or read books about this subject. Or just google/wikipedia and do some research about because this is crazy. It's about money now. Offense put people in the seats. $$$. Here's the crazier food-for-thought. If athletes were supremely more gladiator then vs now (because remember, back in like 50,s 60s, they did not have the gear that they have now), imagine how supreme older era's were like 1920s, 1850s, 1700s. People were built different. I know im going on a tangent but its just to show you how soft NFL is now. Weak. Beta. Social media entertainers. We have cars now. Back then, no cars at all. People rode horses or literally walk or ran. Mailman or express delivery had to run from location to location. Kings with security guards (archers) had to run beside the person they are guarding who is riding the horse. Now we have cars. Just a food-for-thought on how weaker and weaker we are becoming. Disgrace to nature. Only a "very few" real ones left. Very few. And that few is just "ehh..somewhat acceptable".
When Horse Collar Tackle banned, Roy Williams became worthless player because he couldn't defend against passing game then disappeared so suddenly. Btw, I am glad that Hip Drop Tackle outlawed because defenders were looking for taking ball carriers out of the game. It's also similar to Horse Collar Tackle because both designed to injury players.
Ju-Ju's crack back block on Burfect was a thing of beauty. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving player.
I’m still mad to this day for him leaving the Steelers
The penalty wasn't for the hit, it was for standing over him and talking while Burfect was laid out.
Then vonn bell cracked him & ended juju career

I remember one guy who'd go flying into the wedge every kick off in highschool, he's a marine now.
I’m surprised Mike Vrabel milking the clock the same way against Belicheck a few months later in the playoffs wasn’t mentioned here.
It was one of the sections on that article when he was explaining the rule
Jumping the line should not be illegal. It's a pure skill move

Agreed
Totally agree, as long as they’re not offsides. It’s punishing fast powerful players like Troy Polamalu.
agree.. it's one of the most exciting plays to watch..
Worried that officials are going to have a tough time calling/not calling hip drop.
Honestly, due to the danger of the most if not all of the plays I can understand why these are banned.
nfl just soft they need to be like arena football league
At the end of the day the nfl is just soft and are making the wrong decisions. Tom Brady is right, it is pretty much impossible to make a good (legal) play on defense. If you think that it’s too dangerous maybe you should not be playing football 🤷😢
