For anyone who wants to play Red Faction on PC, there is a community patch called Dash Faction which adds many QoL features like widescreen resolution with correct aspect ratio, AA, AF, bug fixes, direct/raw mouse input, autosave after level transitions and much more.
It is also needed if you want to play modern custom SP content (like the excellent Kava campaign, which feels like a proper expansion pack) and MP.

It's always crazy to think that red interaction started as an FPS. It's even crazier that Saints Row and Red Faction share a universe.

The Red Faction franchise is definitely worth a chance. Red Faction II even supports USB keyboard and mouse, which not many games supported on the PS2.
Red Faction: Guerrilla allows you to go full send on an entire city and is probably the best game in the series, though it is more akin to GTA.
The last game RF: Armageddon is still worth playing despite what every critic will say. Come on, the game has a magnet gun which allows you to drag entire buildings down on top of your enemies!

I remember the Railgun Snipers being the most annoying thing about this game too. Resistance Fall of Man actually handles this kind of enemy better since Auger blasts from Steelheads are projectile and they take at least 3-5 seconds for them to phase through objects giving you enough time to dodge. They never feel as cheap as this game does on top of this Fall of Man's Auger doesn't require you to be super precise either like this game's Railgun.

The first Red Faction is really fun and criminally underrated...Red Faction II is barely worth a single playthrough.
P.S. Playing Red Faction on Steam with Dash Faction installed is, by far, the best way to play this game.

Naw, on PC the railgun mercs are... just as badly thought out. At least it sounds like the autoaim on console gives you some kind of counterplay. On PC it straight up feels like one of those 90s game design choices that was thrown in without really thinking at all about how the players could respond to it. The big problem that emerges when you have to do your own aiming is that they use the exact same set of models as all the other mercs, and their weapon models are too small and indistinct to reliably look for unless you're right in their face, so when you *can't tell your targets apart* every encounter becomes a game of dice. Yeah, you'll know after they start shooting, but by then you're already dead.
Evolution of Descent's Drillers! Now they can disguise themselves as other enemies while they one-shot you! 'cause clearly, players weren't taking enough damage. :D
Gets bad enough towards the endgame that usually I lose interest in playing. I think I've finished the game once, but I must have played through that first half a dozen times. :)
And it is too bad, because if they'd realized this dilemma I can off the top of my head think of two or three different things they could have done that would allow these enemies to actually pressure the player rather than just end their game. If me, as an amateur designer at best, can figure that out, I'm sure the actual professionals could have if they had thought to.

Great insight! Yeah, it was a bit of wishful thinking. Still, as you say, the game is good enough up to that point that I love it anyway.

@@TalkingSkullGames Yeah, there's still a lot of game before they show up.
My favourite thing isn't even the gameplay itself, it's the voiceovers -- so fun just talking back at the guards as they're trying to diss you.
And all the ridiculously overblown death screams. How does every character know to take a deep breath right before they're killed? XD
The OST with all its vibrato analog synth leads, big symphonic solos and synthesized guitar-adjacent... things... is one of all-time favourites too.

I really liked Red Faction, but yeah, screw the mercenaries. Wth were they thinking!? Neither Half Life or Halo CE pull BS like that on you.
You can buy Red Faction and its inferior sequel on PS4 and they will play on PS5 too. Pc versions require outside patches/mods to get working. Embracer has done nothing to update those versions on Steam or GOG.
Man, I miss the Volition who made Red Faction, The Punisher, and Saints Row 1&2. How the mighty have fallen today.
Halo CE perfected controls for FPS games on consoles. Though to be fair, the good Call of Duty games improved upon the controls too.
2001 also gave us Return to Castle Wolfenstein and AVP2. We didn't get a console port for AVP2, but Return got a good original Xbox port a year or so after the original PC release.
