Microsoft has always made several editions for Windows. These are typically Windows Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education, with some previous versions having things like Windows 7 "Home Premium" and Windows "Ultimate Edition". But with Windows 10, are there really that many differences between the Home and Pro versions? This video goes into what those are, and who might be actually interested in the extra features, or whether you don't need them at all.

Great info, I was wondering what the difference was. I especially was interested in Hyper-V, I can definitely see a use for that. I have pro, but haven't really dived too deep into it. Been loving Windows 10 though, no real complaints other that some minor problems I experienced last year with services not working that I never used so... no biggy. They fixed it and all is fine now. I didn't upgrade from Windows 7 until the start of 2019, I waited for the major bugs to be ironed out and they were. Microsoft has always been good when it comes to fixing bugs that crop up.
As for the RAM... who will possibly need more than 640K?! 1MB? That's insane! ;)
I like not being forced to update when gaming.
Then you need the pro version. An other nice feature of Windows Pro is that you can switch it to S mode as you like. That means that you use normal mode, install the software you need and then switch to S mode. Then you are safe from attach from malware that can else be installed on your computer without you know.

One of the benefits of Pro vs Home for a general user, is probably user admin tools. The ability to add, remove users and set groups. Enabling the guest account etc. Just in case you want to let people use your computer/laptop without having to create an entire new user profile/permission set. Or give access to your user with all your personal files. Even though W10 home is meant to be dumbed down. I think it would have been nice to offer this one feature to give home users a little bit more control over their machine.
Thanks for the detailed information! Was just wondering if there lies any difference in the efficiency of the antivirus between Windows Pro and Home?
None

If you're a cyber security guy or gal, you might also want to delay updates to test malware to see if you're environment is vulnerable to the malware as is before deciding on updating, or to simply reverse engineer malware that a particular environment is vulnerable to. Normally you'd to this in a VM, but it's feasible you have a machine set up for this specifically (sandbox).
3:12 Linus from linus tech tips smiling in proud.
1:55 yeah... I‘m searching for an other solution for this problem. I only have the home version😒
There was one important difference we ran into with XP Home versus XP Pro, where the former would only allow 5 file-sharing connections at once, while in the latter the limit was 10.
Of course, Linux has no limit. Guess what happened to the XP installations ...
@RLTest-cf3fe Still too limited, I’m afraid.
Thank you man, nice explanation. I was realy able to understand the differences between the vesions. keep it up man
Honestly, I always tell everyone I get to to use Sandbox when trying out possible threats, be it forwarding access to a unknown usb device, downloading pdfs and sometimes e-mail. It is a great addition to any security tool box, and really sad it is restricted to pro

My questions are these... I have 2 Dell computers, both with Windows 10 Home, and they are both different, ie settings , control panel, etc, are different formats/designs.
How are the menu's of Pro laid out?
The date on this video is December 2017; It is now March 2020. Perhaps there are updates or improvements to put into a new video - TY
I use Pro and I just recommended a laptop for a friend and was wondering what's the difference between the two OSs. Thanks much for your detailed explanation. I'd strongly recommend the Home Edition...clearly it's as stable as the Pro Edition and the differences seem to benefit the corporate user and not the home user.
Group Policy Editor is awesome, and worth the extra IMO. Saves doing things via registry tweaks.
Tru
It also does one important thing that's impossible from the registry: making Windows 10 not bother you with updates unless you ask it to handle them. GPEdit makes it possible to make Windows 10 only apply updates when explicitly asked from Settings, or even only download when asked.
You can download that in home tho. I did it and it's like having pro.
Yep must have feature to disable all the crap ms put in windows 10.

I stopped using Windows with Win7, when my Win7 Install finally gave out. Now, here I am a few years later, thinking about trying Win 10 or 11. I'm doing research, now. So, I don't know nothing about Win 10 or 11.
You said that Pro Workstation could support multiple CPU's, bur regular Pro couldn't.
I have an Intel CPU with eight cores in it. Is that what you was talking about? Win 10 Pro can only support one of the cores? There is also HyperThreading, were each core has HyperThreading. That's not supported? Or did you mean a mobo with multiple physical CPU's?
Logically, a single physical CPU with multiple cores appears to Windows the same as multiple physical CPU's. That would be a major drawback, if that's what you meant, that Win10 Pro can only support one core.
8:16 you can also use it to buy one copy of Microsoft office, for example and use it on all windows 10 devices you own. So it can also be used personally.

Thanks Thio you did a good job. i am now more satisfied with my windows 10 home than i was before the video. frankly i was hoping other windows would allow more visual customization of windows such as rounded corners and maybe metallic, pearlescent. iridescent, and glossy color options.
*1 year later*
btw windows 11 is there with rounded corners but no metallic colors, there is frosted glass colors, which is like a matte pearlescent with the right wallpaper.
Remember back when Home and Pro were separated by 2 different operating systems? The Home edition running on top of MS-DOS and the Pro edition running on the NT kernel
I used to have windows 7 ultimate when i got 10 i lost all of the extra features 😞
I am curious when did this idea of "always install all available updates" start? When I was in school (early 2000's) for Microsoft certification, we were taught never install any updates unless you have an issue or feature that is specifically adressed by the update. Installing unnecessary updates only invites unforseen problems.
Ditto. One such update clobbered my print spooler for over a year & a half on my Windows 10 desktop. Patch after patch did not remedy the situation; in fact it made a few things worse.
Thanks for the info. I prefer Pro, but still have a few home version systems in the studio, unfortunately, for now. Keep up the great works, and merry Christmas / happy holidays! :)
Great video ThioJoe thank you.

when you have windows pro do you get Word, Powerpoint, Excel with it?
I've been wanting to get Windows 10 for a while now and I'm beginning to think that the home version may be better than the pro version for me.
What about RAM consumption ?
With all the extra features you mentioned added on Pro, doesn't it consume a little more RAM and resources than Home ?
Why would it? Win10 Pro doesn’t have any extra things which involve background processes.

Boom! Right back to 7 pro I shall go.
Windows 10 is kinda weird when it has control panel and settings seperatrly.
You know that i tried different version of windows 10 on my laptop (msi ge72), and when disabling defender, gameDVR etc via registry editor windows 10 doesn't seem to like it and gives up after a few months, GPU at 80% max, big lags. Looks like imma install windows 7 xD
Else on my desktop windows 10 is awesome, works incredibly fast even with a HDD and no bug even when touching the registry a lot. So weird
@Diego well RAM for gaming ain't THE main concern, even with 8GB on one stick it's enough for 95% of normally optimized games. But i'm okay with you :)
But i don't know, my MSI ge72 ain't really compatible with Windows 7, drivers must be installed manually when installing windows, they aren't optimized etc.. so i never really bothered trying.
Else on my desktop computer i tried a few versions of windows 7, never had the full perf of my graphics card (GTX 660 8 years ago) so i updated to a clean installe of w7 home, then pro and same problem.. even with latest or old, optimized drivers. Went to windows 10 and had a performance boost of 20-25% on my graphics card (GTA 5 from high 70 fps to very high 75 after the update).

Great video. Did you mention about LTSC version before? It must be nice to know about it.
Group Policy is very useful indeed, as some settings are only available through there. Would have been easier if all settings were controlled through registry, so I could just have several files I could run after installing Windows. There are ways to automate group policy but they’re far less straightforward than simply clicking on .reg files
The virtualization is pretty handy. I tend to test out a lot of shady applications. LOL
