I've been eating mangoes all my life and it's the first time I'm seeing inside of a mango seed. I only just realised its in a pod. Mango matters starts now.
I threw my mango seed in my backyard just a few years ago (have basically a field as a backyard and because it's so green and bushy anything that can compost we just throw out there) and it's the largest tree in my backyard. In less than a month it grew pretty fast. I live in Jamaica so having at least 2 or 3 types of mango trees in your home is pretty normal. I have a Julie and an East Indian mango.
Hey - the mango you grew from seed, how does it taste? Like the original mango or something entirely different? Most folks graft mangoes to get good fruit… how was your experience?
@@vidyashankara It is pretty sweet, like any original mango taste. Each season they produce a lot of fruit. So much that most times we just give them away.
I just tossed the mango seed while still in the husk into our compost pile along with other kitchen scraps . Never intended to grow a tree but it grew on its own!
@@TechplantChannel I had a similar epiphany a few years ago - we normally toss all our kitchen scraps in with the chickens as food/scratch for them, they eventually turn it all into compost. So one fallI had taken a wheelbarrowful of compost from their run to spread under my apple trees, and lo and behold, there was a sprouted mango mixed in there! So now I try to sprout them whenever I can, it's way fun.

I'm retired and live in Thailand. I've planted the seeds by accident just by dumping them in a corner of the yard. Now I have several trees from seed coming up, plus a bunch of trees bought from garden shops. One of them, planted about 8 years ago started bearing fruit two years ago. First there were about 4 little round mangoes that didn't taste very good. The next year there were about 6 mangoes and the taste was better. This year the tree is full of mangoes, and like most trees around here grown from seed, the fruit is rather small, but sometimes delicious. One of the neighbors had a tree with almost a tangerine-mango taste. This year the fruit is slightly bigger, and I'm waiting for it to ripen more before I pick it to see what the fruit tastes like. My other trees from seed are still too young and won't be producing fruit for a few more years yet. The trees get tall fast over here.
Thats a really cool way to germinate a mango seed! It seems to grow a thicker stem foundation earlier on too. Thanks for the tutorial, I'll be giving this a go.
I remember when I was a kid I would just throw the seed in our garden and the three would just automatically grow. They wouldn’t grow full and tall obviously but we already had like 3 mango trees that would give us fruits every year
I already grew my mango tree and it was a success now we're celebrating his birthday his already 1 months old I can't wait for him to turn into a tree thanksssssss
Thanks for all the info you provided. I didn't know the method of growing mango plant. I had burried last mango seeds I had directly and was very disappointed with the results. I will work on this project this season and will update you as soon as I get any results.
I just buried the seed directly in the dirt, few months later, boom stem and leaves were developed. Same thing with avocado seed. Surprisingly they look so similar.
I just started to propagate a mango seed today! But I did a different method and want to know your opinion on it. I wrapped the seed in a warm damp paper towel and sealed it in a zip lock bag (I’ve seen other people do it).
ayyy i followed your video and it worked, normally just by planting the seed in soil used to take me about 1-2 months, but by your technique it took only 15 days for the plant to have 5 leaves :) thanks man!
Omg I think you just saved my 2 seeds. I followed another video today and put them in zip lock with surrounded by plastic and water. My seeds had roots already though when I opened them. So thank you. In the jar they go😊
hey, I know it has been a year, but you can actually make your own mini composter for humus and the compost leachate, both can be used as fertilizers, the latter being liquid of course. here, take a look at this ruclips.net/video/7pfDI0NDvc4/видео.html&ab_channel=Matthewd%27Alessio I make these and I like the results, I even use the compost in my plants and it helps finding some use to my fruit/vegetable waste that would otherwise just become rubbish
Cool hack for cleaning up mango seed husks: Brillo (steel wool) pads are GREAT for cleaning them perfectly, and they do not harm them at all! Try it! (The ones without detergent, of course.)
This helped a lot! I did this but it got sick and I did not know what to do. The seed part had molded underground and I wasnt providing any nutrients. This helped thank you!
I have found that removing the seed from the husk is totally unnecessary. The only advantage that I have found is that removing the seed from the husk and submerging it in water for 24 to 72 hours reduces the time to sprout by half. However, the resulting seedlings are not as vigorous as those left in their husks almost without exception.
I agree, last year, I had not watched any of these planting tutorials and just planted the seed with the husk in the pot, all of them sprouted within about 2 or 3 weeks and most of them have grown well till now.
How do you tell which side to plant it on? I have no idea about orientation with the husk on. The first time I tried planting mango I just threw the seed with the husk on in my yard. I had no clue what i was doing but it grew a foot tall before dying. Another time I tried it, the seed grew from the bottom and couldn’t reach the top before it died.
the problem is that, mangoes are going to start growing when the tree reached its maximum height. That takes around 3 to 5 years. for that reason grafting the mango tree is necessary. To graft you need to shave a small part of the tree and on top of that spot you need to tie a black bag with a mix of organic fertilizer . A couple of days later a small branch will grow not far from the black bag. you need to cut the small branch and plant it into a garden pot with dirt and fertilizer. 3 months later you will transfer it to the ground. If everything goes right within 10-18 months the tree will grow 6-10 feet and mangoes will start growing. I know it may be long process but it takes only 12 months to happen with effort
We followed your video, growing from seed in water, and it did so well that we planted it in a pot at about 5 weeks. It is a foot tall and has 9 leaves, and the last two are enormous! Just 4 days ago those newest leaves were teenie tiny and today they are 8” long and purple. Wish I could post a picture to this comment! We live in SWFL and it is thriving outside on our lanai. We got the mango from a co-worker and don’t know if this is a dwarf tree or regular one. Is there any way to figure this out at this stage?
Try to plant ur mango seeds on a pot and ur mango will grow Faster..... Mango seeds are different from avocado seeds!! I have a 3 month old mango tree, and is 4 times bigger!!
Mango trees need a lot of Sunlight ☀️ If you see ur mango leafs turning yellow Is because need sunlight _ and the Best advice is.. after 6 inches tall , plant ur tree and remove from the Pot !! He will grow faster and stronger, and you will have Mango around 2 to 3 years o
@@clairebear1932 I think she means instead of germinating them with water, just plant it in a pot from day 1 without it having roots and leaves (just the seed)

I started the mango seed more than a month ago. Yhis method is way better than others. And i have some tips if any of you want to start this. 1. Choose a mango without many green spots. It may be fungus or it may be unripe. Try using either fully yellow or orange mangoes. And then take the seed out. Try not to damage the root thing. 2. Make sure to take the peel of. If your mango is yellow coloured. The peel or paper like thing would feel more like plastic and can be removed with a bit of hardwork. Doesnt matter if there is a little bit left. Drying out the seed decreases chances of mould 3. While placing the toothpick do not put them in the line that divides the seeds. This can cause delay in germination. 4. After you have it in water. Either add turmeric to the water or to the root portion of the seed. 5. After you see proper leaves. Add extremely little amounts of fertilizer. 6. Plant it in the soil. Water alot. And maybe graft it later. Hope this helps. If your seed moulds then let it dry out a bit and maybe spray something that kills fungus.
I did mine before actually watching any videos and got lucky. I live in Eastern Ohio and just put the seed in my yard soil, which is heavyish clay loam. It sprouted fairly fast though believe it or not. Im so excited to see how it grows.
wow amazing work, congrats on your patience and goodwill to film and care for this mango! I also have one but is tiny for now, thx for helping me with your video
I am proud to announce, that this video has motivated me to start my own mango tree... and I am even prouder to announce that I still have 10 fingers and an extracted mango seed! :-P
@@alinaabraham295 Aweful :-D It tried it 3 times in total, but i never got any life out of the seed. One started to rot and the other two were very uncooperative: after some month I started to question my sanity and feared that I may have accidentally been watering mango-seed-shape rocks all along. But my lemon seeds on the other side are doing great :-)
This was a helpful video. Can you review when to transplant the mango tree to a larger pot and then when to plant it outdoors in the ground? Also how do you know if your tree will produce fruit?
its only going to produce fruit if you live in the proper zone where it can grow outdoors. for us who arent in those zones they will just have to be a nice houseplant. when roots are poking out of the bottom you can check on it and repot it
Maybe I’ll do a couple of these considering it’s mango season now. I might even try to do a bonsai tree with one of the sprouts. I have so many ideas! Edit: I used a cherry tree sapling and put it into a small bonsai pot. It didn't grow much so I'm waiting until I can get a larger pot. It's super cute lol.
You could do a good large bonsai with a mango (think 2-4 foot bonsai) but the main issue with mangos is that defoliation doesn't make the small leaves that your typical tiny bonsai are known for. That being said don't give up and let us know how it goes. The larger bonsai are just as cool in my opinion and I believe would work great with the mango leaf size if you do it right, maybe I'll have to try it too once my Kent seedlings are big enough to start the pruning.
So much work...To be honest, our mango tree grew because of me carelessly throwing a just eaten from seed...After a few weeks, it grew and we just let it be. We already harvested from it a few times...

Thanks for replying......I suspect the tree needed strong branches to support its fruit. You made a great video...think I might try growing a mango tree myself. Thanks very much.
Mine took five days to germinate and grow since I used the easiest method which is rapping your seed with damp paper towels and putting it in a Tupperware or zip lock bag in a dark place, it will grow super fast under ten days
So I've been using this method and I have noticed that a 2 of my mango sprout's bigger leaves are curling inwards and not spreading outwards like they should be. It's been growing inside the whole time. What does this mean for my plant?
Can you please give some explanation as to how often the plant should change pots and how big it needs to get before putting it into the ground. This video was super helpful for the beginning stages of what to do and expect.

Thanks for watching!
I remember when I was a kid I would just throw the seed in our garden and the three would just automatically grow. They wouldn’t grow full and tall obviously but we already had like 3 mango trees that would give us fruits every year
im jealous!
I already grew my mango tree and it was a success now we're celebrating his birthday his already 1 months old I can't wait for him to turn into a tree thanksssssss
Happy birthday mango tree
Happy birthday mango tree!
😄
Thanks for all the info you provided. I didn't know the method of growing mango plant. I had burried last mango seeds I had directly and was very disappointed with the results. I will work on this project this season and will update you as soon as I get any results.
Wonderful!
My mango finally grew after 3 weeks it's so gorgeous 😍🥰
Amazing!
I just buried the seed directly in the dirt, few months later, boom stem and leaves were developed. Same thing with avocado seed. Surprisingly they look so similar.
ill have to do some tests!
My mom told me she did the same, its been about a month or so, and i just saw it grow in 2 days, like i wasn’t there i was suprised but happy lmao
In the jar they go😊
Thanks for watching. The bag and wet paper towel method can work ok too.
What fertilizer do you use to give it to your plant/tree and how many times do you do it?
Fertilizing is not needed for any plants let Mother Nature do the work the soil life will take care of things
Mine is in a pot indoors at all times . It’s going to eventually need something ?
Use egg shells
hey, I know it has been a year, but you can actually make your own mini composter for humus and the compost leachate, both can be used as fertilizers, the latter being liquid of course.
here, take a look at this
ruclips.net/video/7pfDI0NDvc4/видео.html&ab_channel=Matthewd%27Alessio
I make these and I like the results, I even use the compost in my plants and it helps finding some use to my fruit/vegetable waste that would otherwise just become rubbish
mango grows easily, don't need any fancy fertilizers
Cool hack for cleaning up mango seed husks: Brillo (steel wool) pads are GREAT for cleaning them perfectly, and they do not harm them at all! Try it! (The ones without detergent, of course.)
Very interesting and practical video.
Thanks for watching!
Quarantine has made me interested in this video again...
I hope you plant one!
@@TechplantChannel Like you mentioned with other videos, I am experimenting on multiple seeds and methods to see which grows first.
This helped a lot! I did this but it got sick and I did not know what to do. The seed part had molded underground and I wasnt providing any nutrients. This helped thank you!
Glad it helped! Good luck!
Interesting ill have to try it
I agree, last year, I had not watched any of these planting tutorials and just planted the seed with the husk in the pot, all of them sprouted within about 2 or 3 weeks and most of them have grown well till now.
With the husk it's disadvantage is that ur chances of germinating is low
@@Kimace I haven’t found that to be the case given enough time.
I just kinda throw the seed around my kitchen like a pissed off ape until it was open
lmao, yeah sometimes they are a real pain to get open!
@@TechplantChannel they are, i used a knife and cut my finger to the bone :/
edit: it was a butter knife
just use scissors at the end of the husk
@@crystal4478same
I used scissors to make a small slit on the side of husk and open it from there with my fingers
the problem is that, mangoes are going to start growing when the tree reached its maximum height. I know it may be long process but it takes only 12 months to happen with effort
wow nice! I wish i could plant outside where i live!
Wow so if I don’t graft it it won’t fruit?
@@americandomino3656 thats great!
A mango tree grown from poly-embryonic seed do not need to be grafted.
Find a list of polyembryonic mangoes which can grow fruits in 2 to 4 years time
Subscribed! Definately an easy way to make a mango plant grow!
Thanks for the sub! good luck
Thank you!! Trying my first mango tree. Hoping it'll grow.
Best of luck!
Thank you already got a fat root growing 😁
We followed your video, growing from seed in water, and it did so well that we planted it in a pot at about 5 weeks. It is a foot tall and has 9 leaves, and the last two are enormous! Just 4 days ago those newest leaves were teenie tiny and today they are 8” long and purple. Wish I could post a picture to this comment! We live in SWFL and it is thriving outside on our lanai. We got the mango from a co-worker and don’t know if this is a dwarf tree or regular one. Is there any way to figure this out at this stage?
This tutorial is great 👍🏻
Thanks!
Try to plant ur mango seeds on a pot
and ur mango will grow Faster.....
Mango seeds are different from avocado seeds!!
I have a 3 month old mango tree, and is 4 times bigger!!
Mango trees need a lot of Sunlight ☀️
If you see ur mango leafs turning yellow
Is because need sunlight
_ and the Best advice is.. after 6 inches tall , plant ur tree
and remove from the Pot !!
He will grow faster and stronger, and you will have Mango around 2 to 3 years o
What do you mean put it on a pot
@@clairebear1932 I think she means instead of germinating them with water, just plant it in a pot from day 1 without it having roots and leaves (just the seed)
@@Rahat2056 thats how mangoes grow actually from thrown away seeds because in thr tropical climate mangoes trees are normal vegetation, growin up in Uganda we spent afternoons climbing trees for guavas, mangoes, jackfruit ....etc
@Island Mike i believe they arent planted, but placed ontop of the soil.
This video make my mouth drool because I love mango
me too but the hairs get in my teeth!
You explained quickly and neatly.. I impressed..
Thank you for info..
My pleasure 😊
It seriously breaks my heart that you didn’t just eat the mango
I did off camera, i love these things
Exactly what I was looking for, 5 stars and a like
Thanks for watching!
@@TechplantChannel haha It died already a long time ago.. but just tried it again a month ago and its already the size that the one in the video has xD love it
which arificial light do you recommend? there r 3 recommended. also, which type of soil/ fertiliser do you use?
for a mango tree? or something else?
@@TechplantChannel mango tree
I started the mango seed more than a month ago. Yhis method is way better than others. And i have some tips if any of you want to start this.
1. Choose a mango without many green spots. It may be fungus or it may be unripe. Try using either fully yellow or orange mangoes. And then take the seed out. Try not to damage the root thing.
2. Make sure to take the peel of. If your mango is yellow coloured. The peel or paper like thing would feel more like plastic and can be removed with a bit of hardwork. Doesnt matter if there is a little bit left. Drying out the seed decreases chances of mould
I love planting tnx for the lecture regarding seed planting...ill try this coz i love mango..grit from philippines
good luck i hope it grows well!!
I will try it right now 🌱 it looks fun 😘!
Good luck and thanks for watching
When i opened the husk and got to the seed it was already yellow and green and had sprouts on it?
lucky you!
I have a question when taking the seed out of the hard shell do you put the seed in direct sunlight or when does the seed need sunlight?
Mine were sitting under strong lights!
The only way that worked with me, thank you soo much 😍🌱
Glad it helped!
LOVE THIS! started mine April 1st!
Nice! I hope it grows well!
Girllll i just started mine last week
How is it going?
It’s so big now!! Well it’s like 5-6 inches! I love it!
Great Channel mate. Love your approach and how forward it is . Subscribed .
Awesome tutorial I have one looking ready to be independent so I’m going to plant it thank you , your new subscriber from Arizona
I am proud to announce, that this video has motivated me to start my own mango tree... and I am even prouder to announce that I still have 10 fingers and an extracted mango seed! :-P
Maaadingnaaa B. How did it go?
Wonderful! Nice job not stabbing yourself. you are truly talented!
Also how do you know if your tree will produce fruit?
its only going to produce fruit if you live in the proper zone where it can grow outdoors. for us who arent in those zones they will just have to be a nice houseplant. when roots are poking out of the bottom you can check on it and repot it
@@TechplantChannel do u know the zones of where it would survive and make fruit?
Maybe I’ll do a couple of these considering it’s mango season now. I might even try to do a bonsai tree with one of the sprouts. I have so many ideas!
Edit: I used a cherry tree sapling and put it into a small bonsai pot. It didn't grow much so I'm waiting until I can get a larger pot. It's super cute lol.
Do it and report back!
yare yare
I live in a place thats a frozen tundra for 5 months a year lol, nice job growing yours though! happy you got fruit from it!
which country do you live in? dont think it would happen in the UK, guessing your in India
How long do you keep the plant in the bucket before you plant into the ground?
for me never because i live in wisconsin
@@TechplantChannel ahh ok!! I live in the Bahamas
I came here after watch grow with nick videos, and saw your comments about growing mango. Small youtuber here and now just subcribe your channel. Thank you for sharing other method of growing mango. Interesting!
A coffee filter at the bottom will prevent the soil from leaking out.
good advice, I recently tried toiletpaper because I had a roll close by when transplanting lol.
@@TechplantChannel I have many plants with coffee filters from 10 years ago. Still no leaking.
or a zinc mesh which will make the roots grow upwards when they touch the mesh -> increasing more overall use of the soil
@@Uhreg Thats interesting. Why is that?
KaptainKarma Because the roots try to grow down they are tap roots and want to dig deep but the mesh will force them to spread horizontally instead of vertically
Lol...The Tree from a Seed will Give fruit very lately... about 14 - 15 years...
Success In Life ... but if you like plants. It ok if you have no fruits. Just an indoor plants. In Canada not so warm. ❤️❤️

Yup, sadly, but the plant is very cool as a decorative plant! Thanks for watching!
@@TechplantChannel you're welcome...
Under ideal conditions most seeds can produce in 3-6 years.
I would love to know if your tree managed to bear fruit......how long would you have to wait for a harvest?
It died when I went on a 3 month vacation to south korea. Im not sure i could ever get it to bear fruit growing it indoors.
Thanks for replying......I suspect the tree needed strong branches to support its fruit. You made a great video...think I might try growing a mango tree myself. Thanks very much.
@@TechplantChannel is it better to grow it outtside?
1 year at least
Mine took five days to germinate and grow since I used the easiest method which is rapping your seed with damp paper towels and putting it in a Tupperware or zip lock bag in a dark place, it will grow super fast under ten days
Nice!
My mom would be so excited to see this. Just subscribed :D
Awesome, thanks for the sub!
So I've been using this method and I have noticed that a 2 of my mango sprout's bigger leaves are curling inwards and not spreading outwards like they should be. It's been growing inside the whole time. What does this mean for my plant?
sounds like low humidity
Omg i hope your tree is ok
I have been doing it wrong. I have been putting the whole hard cover in the pot since I was 18 years old. Now I'm 40. Lol
you can do that but it will be easier to get it to sprout indoors if you remove it! so you arent doing it "wrong", thanks for watching!
I just opened one which was really slippery and had no open so now I have a bunch of cuts.
not good! in the future, you can use a scissors to snip around the outer edge! I hope you heal quickly!
Can you please give some explanation as to how often the plant should change pots and how big it needs to get before putting it into the ground. This video was super helpful for the beginning stages of what to do and expect.
Best video out for growing mangos forsure👌 even now
Thanks, are you growing some too?
