The Ems have played baseball in Civic Stadium since 1969 and it seems
2009 will be their last. As Emeralds manager, Greg Riddoch says, “ It’s a
great place to play and the fans are the best in the league, but the old girl
is a little tired.” In Eugene, Civic stadium and the Ems have been part of
life for several generations of fans and this bittersweet farewell season has
a very special meaning. This film is a tribute to all those fans and the many
young men who have come to Eugene to begin their baseball career and
some who have played here and gone all the way to the Hall of Fame.
The film also looks at whether a facility built in 1938 and one of the 10
oldest minor-league ballparks in the nation, should be preserved and at what
cost to the citizens. But mostly this film is about baseball, that oldest of
American sporting traditions. Those warm summer evenings watching
players in uniforms that haven’t changed much in 150 years, while they hit
and field and we hope for a Ems victory.
